UFC 100 Video Preview and Early Betting Odds

June 30, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, WWE / Pro Wrestling

Check out this extended video preview of the Ultimate Fight Championship 100 super show. The video spotlights all three of the main-events at UFC 100. The video continues to hype what is expected to be the biggest UFC show in history.

I will have a full preview next week of the show. The video provides compelling arguments for any of these fighters to win his match. I did find it a bit curious that Dana White made a bigger deal of Brock Lesnar’s win over Heath Herring than he did over Randy Couture. Either way, the show can’t come quick enough for me.

On a side note, there are some interesting early betting lines for UFC 100.
Brock Lesnar (-250) v. Frank Mir (-200)
Georges St. Pierre (-200) v. Thiago Alves (+170)
Dan Henderson (-300) v. Michael Bisping (+220)
Jon Jones (-400) v. Jake O’Brien (-300)

As of today, Bisping as an underdog is a fairly good bet. I would wait on Frank Mir. I would suspect better odds on Mir by fight day.  Thanks to Yahoo! Sports for the tip.

Chris Jericho and Edge: Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions

June 30, 2009 By: Eric Robert Darsie Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

Chris Jericho and EdgeProbably the biggest shocker from the Bash is Chris Jericho and Edge walking out of the Bash as the Unified (or Undisputed) Tag Team Champions. Why were they in the match? Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long was in need for a shock for his job, so what bigger shock of putting two former World Champions together to win and hold the Tag Team titles?

In my personal opinion, and being a philosophy student in college, my philosophical opinion, I couldn’t think of a better tag team champs than Jericho and Edge since tag team wrestling was hot in the 1980s to early 2000s. Really since the WCW/ECW “Alliance” “Invasion” storyline in 2001, tag team wrestling really went in the toilet and was waiting for someone to flush it down. Entered unifying the two tag titles in the WWE at WrestleMania XXV.

Not taking anything from the Colon brothers, I believe that Jericho and Edge would only but benefit the tag titles and their opponents as champs. First things first, both men were former Intercontinental Champions, Tag Team Champions, and World Champions. Jericho even held the tag team titles with Edge’s kayfabe brother Christian, and Edge even held the tag titles with “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan for several weeks back in 2002. To top it off, Chris Jericho’s the only guy to say that he was the very first Undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion and one-half of the Undisputed WWE World Tag Team Champion.

Talking philosophically, I think with Jericho and Edge as the Undisputed Tag Champs, the WWE doesn’t need to try to figure out how to put them in the main event status, move them back and forth on all three shows, help build up the tag team division in the company, and help build up the new guys in tag teams.

Heck, Jericho and Edge could very well even start a new faction underneath them. Both men can draw major heat, so why not put a couple of new guys underneath them to help rub off onto them to quite possibly do what Evolution did for Randy Orton and Batista, evaluate those guys into main event status after the group disbands.

To conclude, putting the Unified, Undisputed, or whatever the WWE wants to call them, putting the Tag Team Championship on Chris Jericho and Edge is well worth it. The Colons can have their best matches with those guys, help bring them up to being main event status, and whoever else the WWE wants to have challenge them for the straps.

If the WWE would keep the straps on Jericho and Edge, and give them three guys underneath them for a rub, they could have a Survivor Series match up right there. But knowing the WWE, they would end this before it really starts. Hopefully Mr. McMahon and the WWE doesn’t end this early before they go far with Jericho and Edge as the Undisputed Tag Team Champions, and get something out of them.

Mark Henry pins Randy Orton on WWE RAW

June 30, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

mark henryFinally, the WWE took the opportunity to elevate a new talent on WWE RAW. No, it wasn’t a young talent like MVP or Jack Swagger who was elevated. The answer to the WWE’s talent problems is 38-year old, 13-year veteran Mark Henry.

Last night’s WWE RAW continued its streak of illogically booked television. RAW is starting to make TNA Impact look like the Godfather. The lack of continuity or sense in the storylines is bordering on outright ridiculous.

Vince McMahon opened the show and continued his bi-polar role of playing heel and babyface. Vince then announced that Donald Trump traded 15 wrestlers between RAW, SmackDown, and ECW. VKM continued to explain that Donald Trump instituted a weekly Guest Host role who would act as G.M. This week’s Guest Host was Batista.

Wow, where do I begin with this fantasy? I understand it is pro wrestling, but I am begging for some logic. Why in the world does Vince have to follow the Guest Host or maintain the trade? Vince stated he didn’t like any of this but he had to follow it. Why? He bought back RAW? It makes absolutely zero sense! I just don’t get it.

Since Batista was now Guest Host, he had all of the power. Batista ordered a 4-man tournament between Triple H, MVP, John Cena, and Miz with the winner facing Randy Orton at WWE Night of Champions. Batista then ordered a Gauntlet Match between Randy Orton and three of WWE RAW’s newly acquired wrestlers.

Once again the WWE dropped a huge ball here. Triple H basically squashed MVP in a short match. The MVP experiment is a bomb. The fans didn’t even care when he walked out. Even Miz got two segments with Cena, while MVP could barely last five minutes. This on the night after Triple H wrestled three grueling matches against Orton.

Later in a match more competitive than last night’s, John Cena pinned Miz. I thought Miz looked pretty strong here. He definitely looked more competitive than last night at the WWE Bash. The match was long and it seemed that Miz dominated most of the bout. He sure as hell looked a lot stronger than MVP did.

So we go into next week’s WWE RAW with Triple H vs. John Cena with the winner facing Randy Orton. Wow, if you woke up from a two year coma you wouldn’t have missed a thing. It is bordering on insanity at this point. It is obvious as you watch WWE RAW that the only wrestlers that get superstar reactions are Cena, H, and Orton.

But wait, finally someone was elevated last night to the top tier. Orton pinned his first opponent in the Gauntlet Match, Evan Bourne. Bourne looked good, but that isn’t the way to debut anyone. The next opponent was Jack Swagger. Swagger is on pace for big things in the WWE. He could have made an immediate impact with a win. Instead, Swagger pulled a heel move and voluntarily lost the match via count out.

Finally, Mark Henry waddled down the aisle to be Orton’s final opponent. I was surprised at how over Henry was. Henry teased pulling the same thing Swagger did but changed his mind. Henry proceeded to dominate Orton. Henry pinned Orton with a power slam for a clean finish. Yes, Mark Henry is your answer.

Hey, I have nothing against Mark Henry but you have to be kidding me. There are times when I even forget he is on the roster. Henry has been in the WWE for well over a decade. Henry has blown every opportunity he has had in a top position. Henry is also clumsy at times and has been known to injure opponents. I think there is some short-term payoff here, but nothing that will matter a year from now.

The WWE could have done something huge with this scenario. Anyone getting the first clean pin over Orton on RAW would be an immediate superstar. This is something that won’t mean nearly as much when it is repeated. Thus, it was crucial to get it right the first time. I could name ten wrestlers I’d love to see in this spot and Henry wouldn’t even be in my top 20.

The WWE will already have taped next week’s RAW by the time you read this. I will save the spoilers for another time. Next week will feature Cena vs. Triple H in the main-event. This will be their third meeting and I’m rather surprised that they are giving it away for free. Regardless of how you feel about these guys, it is probably the only blockbuster main-event that the company has on the roster.

Additionally, the WWE has already announced next week’s Guest Host. The host will be the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase. This will surely get some attention from old-school fans like me who remember the days of the Million Dollar Man. Hopefully he pulls a kid out of the crowd and makes him cry or has a woman bark like a dog like the old days. Either way, seeing the Million Dollar Man back on WWE television will be a welcome sight.

The details of the full trade are…

Moving to the Raw roster:
Gail Kim
Alicia Fox
Jack Swagger
Evan Bourne
Mark Henry

Moving to the SmackDown roster:
Matt Hardy
Finlay
The Hart Dynasty – David Hart Smith, Tyson Kidd & Natalya

Moving to the ECW roster:
Shelton Benjamin
Goldust
William Regal
Brie & Nikki Bella

Former WWE star Avoids Jail Time

June 29, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

Brian LawlerFormer WWE tag team champion and the son of a current WWE star was arrested last week. Brian Lawler otherwise known as Brian Christopher was arrested for public intoxication one night after a bar fight with an MMA fighter. Christopher was sentenced today and barely escaped jail time. Puppies!

Mickey Rourke portrayed a troubled ex-pro wrestling superstar in The Wrestler. A lot of former WWE stars were compared to Randy the Ram following the movie. Brian Christopher surprisingly was not on that list. Recent troubles are only the icing on the cake for a wrestler who truly epitomized Randy the Ram.

Brian Lawler is the son of Jerry “the King” Lawler. Lawler had a big run in the WWE a decaed ago as Grandmaster Sexay, Brian Christopher. Lawler and Scotty 2 Hotty known as Too Cool would go on to win the WWE tag team titles. The team is likely most known for doing goofy dances with Rikishi following their bouts.

Lawler would later be released by the WWE. Lawler was a lot of trouble behind-the-scenes. I have talked to wrestlers over the years who absolutely hated him in the WWE. Lawler miraculously would get a second opportunity in 2004. Lawler lasted three matches before he was released for good.

Jerry Lawler ruled pro wrestling in Tennessee for decades. Lawler was to be the heir apparent to his father in Memphis. It was years before Brian was acknowledged as a Lawler, hence the ring name Lawler. Lawler was a good talent and a hell of a promo. Unfortunately he never reached his potential due to his own demons.

His story is very similar to Ric Flair’s son Reid. Reid has a tremendous amateur wrestling acumen. Reid was a natural for pro wrestling and thought of as a superstar in the making. Yet, several arrests including one which included heroin will likely prevent Reid from ever seeing a WWE ring. It takes a lot to get blacklisted in the WWE if you are named Lawler or Flair. Unlike Reid, Lawler actually had his shot and blew it.

Lawler has been bouncing around the Tennessee independent wrestling circuit for years. Trouble continued to follow him. It was reported last week that Lawler got into a bar right with an MMA fighter. The pictures of Lawler’s arrest the next day tell you how that worked out for Grandmaster Sexay.

The following night Lawler was arrested for public intoxication. Lawler reportedly became very belligerent once in custody. Lawler was arrested earlier this year for disorderly conduct. Sadly, it seems like Lawler will never learn from his own lessons.

Brian Lawler was sentenced earlier today. Lawler plead guilty. He will spend 30 days at a rehabilitation facility and ordered to pay a $50 fine according to ABC affiliate WBBJ. He will serve his rehabilitation stint at Pathways.

Legends of the Arena: The Revolution Lives On

June 29, 2009 By: Chris Behringer Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

Legends of the ArenaA heat-wave hit the city of Philadelphia on Saturday night, June 27th at an infamous building on the corner of Swanson & Ritner Streets.. A building which holds a special place in the hearts of extreme legends & hardcore fans. For the first time since 2005, the inmates ran the asylum once again.

It was a night where anarchy ruled. A night where everyone dared to live dangerously. A night to honor those who have passed on to hardcore heaven. And while it may not have been November, it was certainly a night that all will remember.

Alumni of the original ECW presented Legends of the Arena this past weekend; an ECW reunion show with the goal of raising money for cancer research. For those who don’t know the story, “The Queen of Extreme” Francine lost her father & her sister within 4 days of each other to cancer last year. Francine took it upon herself to reunite as many members of the original promotion as she could to present the show & raise money for a good cause.

Fans started packing the building early in the afternoon for a massive autograph/question & answer session as well as bbq with the stars. You could tell the fans & the legends were happy to be back at the place they called home for so many years. The fans who came later, in true ECW fashion, made up a line that went down the block past the Forman Mills attached to the Arena.

Results from the show are as follows (For detailed results, go to www.pwbts.com):
2 Cold Scorpio defeated CW Anderson.
Bilvis Wesley defeated The Muskateer.
Chris Hamrick defeated Devon “Crowbar” Storm.
Rhino defeated Jamie Dundee & Scotty “Riggs” Anton.

The Hardcore Hall of Fame induction follows… with Eddie “Hot Stuff” Gilbert & Chris Candido as memorial inductions; with Tod Gordon and Sabu inducted. The Shane Douglas induction was pulled since he no-showed the event. It was mentioned that both ECW and all that’s followed in the Arena was because of people like Terry Funk (inducted two years ago), Eddie Gilbert and Tod Gordon.

Balls Mahoney/Axl Rotten defeated Da Baldiez.

The bWo defeated the FBI.

Francine then came out to cut her promo and thanking the crowd for their support. Francine is VERY, VERY pregnant. The usual wits in the audience suggested she’s give birth in the ring into a “She’s hardcore” chant. Since that didn’t happen, Francine talked about her sister and father who’d died of cancer, and her one sister (sitting in the balcony with the other family members) who beat cancer. The SISTER got the “she’s hardcore” chant instead.

Al Snow defeated Jerry Lynn (who filled in for the no-show Shane Douglas).

Sabu (with Bill Alfonso) and Sandman defeated Raven (with Chastity) and Justin Credible (with Jason); and Terry Funk as special referee.

At the very end of the show, Justin Credible finally let his inner heel down long enough to say in a surprisingly heartfelt way to the crowd “Thank you for giving me the best four years of my life”.

From a personal standpoint, this is the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long time. I’ve been involved with this business for almost 2 years now; everything ranging from lighting & sound production to ring announcing. This show is what I would consider the high point of my involvement in wrestling. A big thank you is in order for Francine & everyone who made this show possible. If it was just for one night, I’m honored to have been a part of it.

The revolution started in 1993 does indeed live on.
