Beat The Shark NFL Pick ‘Ems Contest For NFL Week 8

October 30, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Contests, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Lingerie Football League Marie NicolePicking myself off of the ground seems to be something i’m good at. Heck I’ve been doing it all season here! Last week Philly girl Jenn Davis dropped a perfect 4-0 record on “The Shark”, leaving me helpless before the games even ended. I have just 2 wins against the ladies to go with 4 losses, but I think I have outdone myself this week.

What do you do when having trouble winning football games, well you challenge a football player. What? Yes fans this week the NFL meets the LFL (The Lingerie Football League) as “The Shark” matches wits with New York Majesty wide receiver, the gorgeous Miss Marie Nicole.

Those of you who follow my work here at CamelClutchBlog.com will remember my Q & A session with Marie earlier this season. She is a kickboxing instructor as well as a football player and is every bit as bright and fun as she is tough. Marie gladly took the challenge and I hope she doesn’t pick football as well as she plays it,or else im in for another long week. Then again think how cool “Beat The Shark” T-Shirts would look at LFL practice sessions! Marie is a Buffalo Bills fan, and claimed, “things have been going well for the Bills the last few weeks, so maybe they will for me too.” That’s commitment to your team and you have to admire her spunk. But enough about gushing over pretty girls for the week, let’s get to the picks:
Marie chose:

BILLS +3.5 vs Texans
COLTS -13 vs 49ers
LIONS -4 vs Rams
SAINTS -10 vs Falcons

While “The Shark” took:

Texans -3.5 at BILLS
EAGLES -1 vs Giants
TITANS -3 vs Jaguars
CARDINALS -10.5 vs Panthers

Ok so let’s see if I can kick a football players butt at football. I sure could use the win here. Good Luck Marie, here and on the playing field.

Don’t forget to check out my fantasy football start em/ sit em article “Flash and Crash” every Friday as well. Thanks for reading, Good Luck in week 8.

TNA Impact 10-29-09 Thoughts And Opinions

October 30, 2009 By: Todd Frizzell Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

TNA ImpactThe first TNA IMPACT since the huge Hulk Hogan announcement, had finally come. This would be the final TNA show, until Hulk Hogan would make his impression. This IMPACT was taped before Hogan was signed, therefore he would not actually appear in the ring, but rather would be shown during his TNA contract signing press conference in New York City.

The show begins with Desmond Wolfe, in the ring, cutting a promo on how he is the next big thing in TNA. Kurt Angle interrupts him, saying that he messed with the wrong guy, when he attacked him last week. Angle challenges Wolfe to a Street Fight later that night, and Wolfe confidently accepts. I am very excited for Wolfe being in TNA, and I’m very glad that he is getting this huge push! I am very excited to see what he brings to the table, and expect big things from him, to come. By the way, he cuts great heel promos as well!

Backstage, AJ Styles is with Lauren, watching the video of him being jumped last week. Samoa Joe comes in, and blames it on Daniels. He tries to confidence AJ, that Daniels in jealous of him, and is tired of him getting all the glory. At least TNA is giving the main event at Turning Point, Joe vs. AJ vs. Daniels for the title, a story behind it. I am very excited to see these 3 lock horns, and it should be an excellent match!

In the first match of the evening, Tara faced off with Alissa Flash. This was a decent match, running for about 5 minutes. After Tara picked up the victory with a fireman’s carry into a side slam, Awesome Kong came out and gave Tara an Implant Buster onto Flash. The story now, is that Kong has gone wild, because she is no longer being controlled by Saeed. It looks like Kong is resorting to her ways, that she practiced when she first came to TNA, total domination! I am very excited, with this rejuvenation, and look forward to her new impact on the Knockout Division!

Backstage, Rhino approached Team 3D, and voiced his conspiracy theory, that TNA is trying to get rid of the older guys like them. In a way, this is ironically a form of a shoot. TNA is really and truly, starting to push the young guys over the older guys. I Just hope to God, that TNA doesn’t put 3D and Rhino in a stable together, like the Main Event Mafia, trying to one up the young guys! Then again, I better not hope very much, because TNA seems to do really stupid things all the time! They better not screw up here!

Next up, was The Motor City Machine guns vs. Team 3D. This was a decent match, only going about 3 minutes. During the match, Chris Sabin was injured, via a urinage courtesy of Brother Ray. At the conclusion of the match, Alex Shelly hooked a Boston Crab on Brother Devon. Devon slammed his hand on the canvas, but shook his head no, telling the ref that he didn’t give. The ref thought he tapped, and called for the bell, giving the MCMG’s the win. This looks to me, like TNA is going to pair Team 3D with Rhino, a a team, after all. Darn it! Rhino will approach Team 3D next week, and tell them how the ref screwed them, because TNA wants the older guys gone. Mark my words!

The next match is Bobby Lashley vs. Eric Young for the TNA Legends Championship. The match was alright going about 2 minutes. Believe it or not, Lashley actually looked pretty good here. He hit a few impressive maneuvers like an elevated back body drop and a sweet T-Bone Suplex. It sure took Lashley a while to come along. He is looking much better lately. During the match, Scott Steiner came out, wearing a shirt featuring Lashley’s wife, and cracked him over the back with a steel chair causing the ref to throw out the match. Lashley is looking decent as of late, but I don’t understand why they are pairing him with Steiner, although Steiner looked pretty damn good at Bound for Glory!

After a commercial break, The World Elite were in the ring, now wearing, very gay looking, matching sweatsuits. Last week, Eric Young promised a huge announcement. It turns out, the announcement was the Legend’s title, is now going to be the Global title, and will only be defended outside of the United States, against wrestlers, none of which are from the United States. In my opinion, this is an interesting decision. This title, could be a great way for TNA to get global or international attention. This could be a great opportunity for TNA to showcase their talent, against world class competitors around the world. After that big announcement, Kevin Nash came out, and cut World Elite down, because of how Young screwed him at BFG. Meanwhile, Beer Money crept up behind World Elite, and attacked them, with a steel chair and a stop sign! Nash tell Young that he can run, but he can’t hide. I have two big problems here. First of all, why did Beer Money attack The World Elite? I can understand their motives, after being screwed in their title shot last week, but why does it look like the British Invasion (World Elite) /Beer Money feud is still going to continue, when there are already new number one contenders for the tag titles at Turning Point, in The Motor City Machine Guns? Again, not to beat the dead horse once again, but this is TNA, expect the unexpected, and throw logic out the window! My second problem with this segment, was the feud continuing with Eric Young and Kevin Nash. Nash is obviously not even close to being near his prime, so why is he even being involved in a story line? Nothing against the guy personally, but he has no business in a feud, which will likely lead to some sort of a pay per view match up. Get it together TNA!

Backstage, Daniels confronts AJ Styles about what Samoa said earlier. Daniels gets very defensive, when AJ isn’t 100% confident about him not being the culprit. This created even more friction for the match at Turning Point, and I’m glad TNA is attempting to make a story out of this match.

The next match, was all three members of the Beautiful People vs. The Knockout Champion ODB, Hamada, and Christy Hemme. This was an alright match, lasting about 5 minutes. Lacey Von Erich got the pin, with a choke slam on Hemme. After the match, Awesome Kong came out once again, but was cut off by Tara. The two brawled until they were finally separated by security. I am really into the Kong/Tara feud, because it reminds me of the Gail Kim/Kong feud, from a few years ago. This could be a very good match up, and I hope to see it at Turning Point!

After, we got Abyss vs. Dr.Stevie, in a No DQ match. This was basically a 3 minute squash, and I thought it was very dissapointing. There were not many weapons used, and oddly enough, Abyss won with Shock Treatment. That’s what you call a finish out of nowhere! After the match, Stevie attacked Abyss with a Kendo Stick. Mick Foley’s music hit, and he came out, acting like he was going to assist Dr. Stevie, but he double corssed him, and hit him in the skull with the Kendo Stick. I really hope this isn’t the end to the Abyss/Foley feud, because I really would like to see more from these two.

Next, Matt Morgan defeated Rhino in a pretty bland, 3 minute match. Why is Morgan being put into these low staked match ups, after his classic with Kurt Angle at BFG? I thought Morgan was going to be a headliner in TNA now. Makes no sence to me. After the match ended, Rhino gored Morgan, and then was chased out if the ring by Hernandez. Please don’t let this turn into another TNA front line vs. the old timers flop. Please TNA, please!

In the back, Homicide demanded a title match with Amazing Red, to Don West. It looks to me like these two will wrestle together at Turning Point, and if given enough time, should pull off a pretty damn good match.

Also, in the back, AJ Styles was shown knocked out on the floor. Again, I’m glad a story is being added to accentuate the Turning Point main event.

Finally, it was time for the main event, Kurt Angle vs. Desmond Wolfe, in a Street Fight. Why this was slated as a Street Fight, I’ll never know. No foreign objects were used, and they barley even fought much outside the ring. Overall, this was a decent match, but I feel these two could of put on a much better performance. I hope to see a great match with these two, at Turning Point. Desmond Wolfe picked up the victory in about 7 minutes, when the ref ended the match, after Wolfe hit a vicious lariat/clothesline. Angle was taken out on a stretcher, which I thought was pretty corny.

Finally, we got to see the Hulk Hogan Contract signing Press conference in NYC. We see him make the official signing announcement with Eric Bishoff and Dixie Carter. I am very glad to see Hogan with TNA. This makes TNA look much mor eprofessional and major league. Hopefully, this is just what TNA needs to elevate themselves to that next level, and possibly compete head to head with WWE!

Overall, this was a decent addition of IMPACT. The wrestling wasn’t nearly as good as it has been in the last several weeks, but there was some pretty good stuff on here as well, especially storyline-wise. In conclusion, I would give this IMPACT a B-.

This Is Mickie James’ Country

October 30, 2009 By: Justin Henry Category: Entertainment, WWE / Pro Wrestling

Mickie JamesYou know, I’ve never liked country music.

Growing up listening to hard rock and classic rock on my dad’s car radio, I developed my musical tastes. Later, much to papa’s chagrin, I got into the thrashier and darker metal acts, as well as dabbling in the type of rap that I could dance (badly) to. While we don’t agree on his Bob Seger and Lynyrd Skynyrd, or my Sevendust and Disturbed, we find common ground on Aerosmith and Pearl Jam. But yet, despite my varied tastes in music, I could never learn to love country.

I’m definitely in the minority here, as country music has grown in popularity considerably. Acts like Rascal Flatts, Big ‘n Rich, and Taylor Swift are among those who have fused the genre with modern hard rock and pop music, mainstreaming it to reach a wider audience. It still astounds me that I live in a place where Philadelphia is 45 minutes away from me on one side, Atlantic City 45 minutes the other way, and yet, at times, I feel like I live in the midst of a bad Jeff Foxworthy sketch Though, with country music gaining steam, it makes sense for performers to reach out or cross over into the genre. I’m not talking about just other artists, though. I’m also referring to professional wrestlers as well.

The news recently broke that Mickie James, five time holder of WWE’s Womens/Divas championships, and one of the most popular women’s wrestlers in recent memory, has signed on with a Nashville-based talent agency, taking steps toward becoming a country singer.

Now, it’d be hasty to jump to conclusions and think that Mickie would be leaving WWE as a result of this decision. After all, many WWE performers do work in movies and music while still fulfilling their contractual obligations in wrestling. Perhaps it’s the fact that this is an outside agency, one not under Vince McMahon’s lock and key, that makes it seem as though her WWE run could be nearing its end.

What am I to make of this? Ever since she debuted on Raw four years ago, Mickie’s been one of my favorite divas. Even then, back when she performed in TNA under her former ring name of Alexis Laree, I liked what she had to offer. It was, however, her “Single White Female” storyline with Trish Stratus that catapulted her to stardom. Never before had WWE booked a storyline with two women that featured such character depth, especially from Mickie, who was still freshly new to the promotion. It was must-see TV, watching Mickie James play a crazed stalker with lesbian tendencies, obsessing with Trish Stratus and her every move. When that story run ended, and Mickie meandered into playing a babyface (mostly due to the residual crowd support from seeing someone, ANYONE, have character depth and motivation), her popularity remained. It also helps that she’s a beautiful woman, with a compact body, enthusiastic eyes, curves in places that could be appreciated by any man, and ravenous brown hair. That’s not to mention that she’s one hell of a hand inside the ring. While WWE has a history of shallowly promoting women solely based on their appearance in lieu of substance, it was great to see Mickie James perform at a high level from her years of experience on the independent scene.

You’d think with this level of appreciation, that I’d be sad to see Mickie go.

You’d be wrong.

Seriously, what’s the point of being in wrestling anymore if you’re Mickie James? In a ten year career, she’s already reached the perceived pinnacle numerous times. She’s thirty years old, which is how old Trish Stratus was when she walked away in 2006. I find it hard to believe that some people are bashing her for wanting to go on a new career path, especially one that’s going to bring her happiness.

You know, maybe they’re onto something. How dare Mickie want to work for a company that doesn’t seem to grasp her popularity! I mean, how many times has she had to lay down and take the fall from some Hawaiian tropic model, fitness model, lingerie catalog model, and outright internet skank, in attempt to transfer some crowd heat onto a woman that doesn’t have one fifth of the natural personality and charisma that Mickie has? I can’t imagine why she wouldn’t want to stay around!

Once Trish Stratus and Lita both walked out the Stamford palace in 2006, in terms of women who could wrestle, show personality, and look beautiful, you had Mickie and….umm….well, Mickie. Oh, you also had Victoria, who was relegated to demented heel comedy act, probably because she was in her mid-thirties. After all, there isn’t a woman on the planet 35 or older that a man wouldn’t give anything to lay down with. Except Marisa Tomei, Brooke Burke, Teri Hatcher, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, Monica Belluci, Alyssa Milano….umm, actually, there’s LOTS of hot women over 35. But still, since WWE wasn’t content on pushing Victoria (who has gone on to TNA, where she is still quite beautiful at 38), you had Mickie. Her only real counter-part was Melina, a veteran of the California indie scene who possesses beauty, skill, and a personality as well.

But otherwise, the women’s roster at that point in time was a bevy of talentless ‘promotional models’ (business slang for: professional hookers) that included teacher-turned-succubus Michelle McCool, annoyingly overrated Go Daddy bimbo Candice Michelle, hot-but-useless Miami Heat dancer Layla, veteran fitness model Torrie Wilson, reality show veteran Maria (who actually tried and tried hard, to her credit), and everyone’s favorite sink-pisser Kelly Kelly. All of this capped off by Diva-search winner, the punk poser princess herself, Ashley Massaro, who became famous for being more brittle than an icicle, as well as leaving wrestling to care for a daughter she doesn’t have. Odd indeed.

You’d think with such a thin roster of mostly talentless hacks that Mickie James would be crowned the Queen until some real competition came along, but you would be wrong. Instead, Mickie was pushed aside as canon fodder, while the likes of Candice, the somewhat talented Beth Phoenix (though dull, and manly to the point where fans can’t be bothered with her), and others leapfrogged her. McCool and Kelly were pushed hard, due to the WWE’s dogma that they, as thin blondes, are more marketable than, say, a 5′4″, athletically built dynamo such as Mickie.

If I’m Mickie, I take this very personally. She can’t grow to be 5′7″ without some sort of revolutionary medical procedure. She’s never going to look like Hollywood’s vision of how a woman should look. So she’s stuck, being this short, thick-thighed woman, who is apparently not marketable to the fans.

Ah, but the fans DO like her, as evidenced by the Cyber Sunday pay per view events, in which the divas were shoehorned into costume contests, since the event was near Halloween, for the fans at home to vote on. Mickie won both contests in 2007 and 2008, as an Indian princess and Lara Croft respectively. She won convincingly both times, proving that there’s a large segment of the audience that will see a woman in thick black booty-shorts, black leather boots, matching halter top, and nearly die of lust.

Thank god my dog knows CPR.

All kidding aside, it’s baffling as to why WWE doesn’t seem to put its entire faith in her as the face of the women’s division. Instead, we see Kelly Kelly dominate commercials as the marquee diva. Kelly is blonde, stick thin, and was hired by WWE when talent coordinator John Laurinitis found her in a clothing catalog. No, really. Also, WWE puts a lot of stock in Michelle McCool, who doesn’t interest fans, and has allegedly alienated a lot of her fellow divas backstage with an apparent stuck-up attitude. Since it’s common knowledge that she’s in a relationship with the Undertaker, the push isn’t so far-fetched.

Add on to this the dictum of bringing in more divas with no wrestling background to the current mix, and it’s easy to see why Mickie seems to be on the verge of making a break for it. There’s the Bella Twins (beautiful, but do NOTHING), Eve Torres (much like the Bellas, except there’s only one of her), Maryse (decent, but only got her WWE gig after trying out for the Diva Search with no prior background), and Tiffany (who is portrayed at the incompetent general manager of ECW, and apparently doesn’t have a last name. It’s like Sade running SmackDown).

An interesting side effect of all of this is the message it sends to young female fans. If you’re a girl who’s 15 or 16 years old, loves wrestling, and dreams of one day becoming a diva in WWE, then you have to take a look in the mirror. If you’re under 5′5″ and have chubby (albeit athletic) legs, don’t even bother. If you’re 5′7″ or taller, and can find a diuretic that can sneak past the WWE Wellness Policy, then you can get a job without displaying any type of outward passion for the sport. Instead, you just have to be able to smile for the cameras and know your role as a woman in a man’s world.

If you have thick thighs or natural curves, just forget about WWE altogether. It’s not a wrestling promotion anymore, and it doesn’t bother me. I understand that the entire marketing direction has shifted toward a makeshift Hollywood production, likely what McMahon has wanted all along, and thus the hiring conditions skew more toward superficiality, lest the viewers change the channels at the sight of a love handle or a pasty patch of flesh.

It’s this type of direction that excludes a woman like Mickie, who was apparently told by WWE officials that she needed to lose weight. To that, I say to WWE officials, that perhaps they need to spend a couple of minutes in the real world. There’s a reason why guys would rather ‘get freaky’ with someone like Kim Kardashian and not Heidi Montag. It’s why men appreciate the curves of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Christina Hendricks, and are grossed out by the obscenely drugged out Amy Winehouse, or even the Hollywood idealistically thin like Kate Hudson.

I truly feel that WWE, in Vince McMahon’s attempt to stray from the “rasslin’” roots and become an accepted part of media elite, has forgotten what’s real. They used to market Chyna as an equality fighter, beating up the misogynistic men who hold down women. They marketed Lita as a rebel, eschewing the normal female role to get down and dirty with the stronger men. They were inspirational because they embodied the qualities that a woman would aspire to have. If I have a daughter, why would I want her to be like Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool? Sure, she could get by on her looks (assuming the mother is a smokin’ hottie to compensate for me), but if my little girl watched wrestling, I’d want her to emulate Mickie. If my daughter was a great athlete, was beautiful, and displayed a wonderful personality, then she would really be on her way in life.

So given the current state of things, I’ll be happy to see Mickie James escape with her dignity in tact, assuming that she’s leaving. I hope she makes it big in Music City, to the point where she, like The Rock in Hollywood, Trish Stratus in yoga and fitness, and even Jonathan Coachman behind his anchor desk, never has to spend another day in the increasingly plastic world of professional wrestling.

Besides, can’t you just imagine Mickie James in a cowgirl hat, leather vest, short little Daisy Dukes, and rawhide boots? Visualize that, and imagine her strutting and gyrating on stage or in some country-fried music video.

I don’t know about you, but it sure beats the hell out of seeing her put over Michelle McCool.

Sharks’ Flash and Crash – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em NFL Week 8

October 30, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Peyton ManningHey again everyone, I hope that you all have been enjoying my good advice. The bye weeks are quickly coming to a close, and your full fantasy line-ups will be back in full swing. It will feel good to finally field a full squad again for most of you I’m sure, but I hope some of you were fortunate enough to take advantage of some waiver wire gems and good bench guys that I have recommended.

I continue to do a nice job in my leagues with a combined 17-4 record. Last week some of my gems like Ryan Grant had real big days as I projected,so I’m here to bring more good news to fantasy owners. So without much more to say, let’s check out this weeks version of “Flash and Crash.”

Quarterbacks:

Flash

Peyton Manning, Colts vs 49ers
This one is totally automatic. You don’t need me to tell you to play this guy every single week. Manning is back in MVP form, and it doesn’t really seem to matter who is getting the football here. The 49ers have been looking alot more like the Niners of a few years back, instead of the team that started 3-1. At home Indy is 100 percent tough, and always a great play for fantasy owners. 3 from Peyton, Sure!

Jay Cutler, Bears vs Browns
Cutler owners had to suffer through a tough one last week. Help is on the way, in the form of the poor Browns defense. Cleveland looks lost on the field quite often and the Bears need to come back in a big way after dropping the last 2 games. Cutler shows that he can deliver, so here against this poor defense there should be plenty of time for him and the rest of this offense to get on track. 2 from Cutler is pretty much a given right out of the gate!

Kurt Warner, Cardinals vs Panthers
After surviving and coming away with a suprise win last week, the Cardinals are out to prove they are for real. Last years NFC playoff game destruction over the Panthers seemed to be the Cards rise to glory and the Panthers fall from grace. I’m not too concerned about revenge talk and all that. The Panthers defense is a shell of what it once was, and Warner and his gang are finding a rhythm.

Crash

Eli Manning, Giants at Eagles
Maybe this foot injury is more then was led on. Manning has looked very meek the last few weeks, and now goes into the very hostile environment of Philadelphia. The Eagles offense the last 2 weeks hasn’t been brilliant, but the defense has played very tough. Manning is losing site of his clutch receiver Steve Smith, and seems to be forcing the ball around too much. If the Eagles can get penetration and establish a blitz, Eli can be in for a very long day.

Alex Smith, 49ers at Colts
Don’t do it, not yet anyway. Every other thing you read about Smith this week will most likely be seen as waiver wire pick up or sleeper, but not on my page. Bob Sanders is back in action and it isnt going to equal good things for the Niners. The book end pass rushers have been teeing of for the Colts and they actually have been decent against the run as well. We know what Smith did last week, but this game is no ordinary game, and the Colts at home are brutal against good QBs let alone Smith.

Matt Hasselbeck, Seahwaks at Cowboys
A few weeks back I may not have felt as such, but the Cowboy defense is starting to play as advertised. DeMarcus Ware got his new contract and these ‘Boys are finding a pass rush as well. Hasselbecks offensive line has some question marks, and it just seems anymore that he’s never fully healthy. This Seahawk team is very hard to figure out and even more of an enigma on the road, that’s enough for me to steer clear of Hasselbeck this week.

Sleeper Pick: Duante Culpepper,Lions
Handle With Care: Donovan McNabb,Eagles

Running Back:

Flash

Kevin Smith, Lions vs Rams
Was I not the guy that called for the rebirth of Ryan Grant last week? Trust in this people, Smith will have his best game of the year this week against the hapless Rams. WR Calvin Johnson will most likely be out, so Smith will not only be big on the ground but will get to use his great hands as well. If you are in a point per catch league, Smith is a stud start this week, but even if you are not his 2 TDs will look great on your stat sheet!

Darren Sproles, Chargers vs Raiders
If last time out was any indication then you all know that Charger running backs always do well against the Raiders. Earlier this season Sproles had some huge plays and found the end zone against them and the Chargers offense is getting hot. After having a 38 spot dropped on them last week by the Jets, I have no faith in this Raiders defense. I don’t think even Norv Turner can screw this one up. L.T. is nothing more then a wear down back now and by the time Sproles gets in there the defenses are worn down. This week will be no exception.

Ray Rice, Ravens vs Broncos
I know the Broncos have been very good this year, but Ray Rice is a fantasy animal. He catches, he runs, he scores and he makes big bang type of plays. Remember when Willis McGahee was the TD guy here? That seems like so last year, most likely because Rice is doing it from all over the field. The Ravens are in desperate need of a win and Ray should see a ton of action in this one.

Crash

Brandon Jacobs, Giants at Eagles
I don’t like much of anything that Jacobs is doing lately. In the past few meeting the Giants have managed to work the ground game against the Eagles, but Philly has made some moves to improve this defense. Jacobs is not finding the end zone of late, and isn’t getting catches either. I don’t expect much from Jacobs here.

DeAngelo Williams, Panthers at Cardinals
I would not have believed it, but the Cards are now the number one defense in the league against the rush. This being the case, teamed with the fact that they will be flying high on offense, the Panthers will be forced to go to the air early in this one. Williams is far from the monster he was last year, and his team currently stinks. Putting 8 in the box to slow up the run game is something defenses will be willing to try at this point.

Julius Jones, Seahawks at Cowboys
Last week we saw Cedric Benson go hog wild against his former mates, but don’t expect to see the same out of Jones. The Cowboys defense is starting to hit stride and Jones has been slow the last few weeks. It may be safe to say that the ‘Hawks will be playing from behind in this one too, so Jones will have to get off fast to have a prayer of doing things in this one.

Sleeper Pick: Beanie Wells, Cardinals
Handle With Care: Frank Gore, 49ers

Wide Receiver:

Flash

Miles Austin, Cowboys vs Seahawks
Austin has become the number 1 guy by far and away in Big D. Tony Romo has rediscovered the deep ball again and the Cowboy offense looks to be back in form. Austin has scored 4TDs in his last 2 games and just seems to be tearing up everyone in his path. Seattle has been torched by some poor teams, and don’t seem to be up to the task of stopping hot players, and right now Austin is smoking hot!

DeSean Jackson, Eagles vs Giants
While I’m not all that crazy about starting McNabb, I fully believe that the Eagles chances of winning rely heavily on Jackson. He has home run hitting ability whenever he touches the ball, and has scored from 60+ yards 5 times already this season. He is doing it all right now and McNabb and company have no fear putting the ball in his hands. Punt returns, wildcats, reverses, receptions, you name it and Jackson has his hands in it.

Donald Driver, Packers vs Vikings
Well I said it all year that the Packers will take down Favre in Green Bay. I also said it would take a big game by Aaron Rodgers to do so, hence the reason im liking Driver. DD has scored TDs in 3 straight and is usually a good bet to have big days against the Vikings. Add into the fact that Greg Jennings is M.I.A. and you will know that Driver is once agaon, even at 36, the main man in this offense.

Crash

Steve Smith, Giants at Eagles
I don’t really know why but this guy is all bit forgotten about. Smith has done a whole lot of nothing the last few weeks, and now he will be chased around all day by Asante Samuel. Add to it that QB Eli Manning seems more aggrivated by a foot injury then we are being told and Smith could be in for a long day.

Roddy White, Falcons at Saints
White has come back to life the last few weeks and is getting more involved in the passing game, however the Saints have been playing really good defense and the secondary is looking tough. In New Orleans opponents have a tough time with signal changes and such so Matt Ryan will probably try and keep it pretty simple. Maybe alot of TE stuff but not alot of big stuff from White.

Steve Smith, Panthers at Cardinals
Jake Delhomme is BRUTAL, The End

Sleeper Pick: Bryant Johnson, Lions
Handle With Care: Donnie Avery, Rams

Defense:

Flash

Cowboys vs Seahawks
Cardinals vs Panthers
Bears vs Browns

Crash

49ers at Colts
Raiders at Chargers
Falcons at Saints

Here comes the Waiver Wire! Yes fans there is still hope and still help via the waiver wire. Keep an eye on these late season steals:

Bryant Johnson, WR, Lions
As long as Calvin Johnson is laid up with a knee injury, Bryant Johnson will continue to be the number 1 option here. He scored his first TD of the season in their last game and this week have the Rams at home, sounds like a winner.

Shonn Greene, RB, Jets
Greene was very active last week in a blow out win over the Raiders. With Leon Washington out of commision, Greene will be sharing the backfield with Thomas Jones, and giving that Jones is over the magic, “30 mark” could mean that the youngster Greene can be very active.

Jacoby Jones, WR, Texans
This mostly depends on the fate of Andre Johnson. Jones has real good speed and does good stuff in the return game, but if Johnsons injury proves to be serious, then he will be needed alot more in the passing game.

Jamal Charles, RB, Chiefs
I recommended Charles a few weeks back, and now that Larry Johnson has gone, well all Larry Johnson again, Charles will not only get his chance to start next week against Jacksonville, but he will take Johnsons job, its in the bank!

Dennis Northcutt, WR, Lions
Read above about Bryant Johnson. Same scenario here, decide which one will step up.

Fantasy Football Week 8 – Quick Fixes & Sleepers

October 30, 2009 By: Cory Mahan Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

David GarrardQuarterbacks
1. David Garrard Jac – He is still a free agent in 34 percent of yahoo leagues, if you are in need of a quarterback, or your quarterback is on bye week, Garrard is your man. This week he has one of the most favorable match-ups, going against the titans pass defense. Last time he destroyed them for 300 yards and three touchdowns. I just can’t see the titans coming out and playing any different then what they have been playing this year.

2. Alex Smith SF – He played the whole second half due to Shaun Hill getting benched for his horrific performances. Smith came out and threw three touchdowns and picked apart the Texans pass defense. I know some of you are thinking it was the Texans, well Smith plays in the NFC West and none of them are much better in the secondary. Also he is a late season quick fix; you are not going to find a top ten player in free agency at this time. If he continues similar performances to this one he could end up pushing for a top ten spot in scoring from week seven on.

3. Matt Hasselbeck Sea – I know that he played like garbage last week, but he has also put on some great performances too. Hasselbeck is available in over 36 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues. So if you are in dire need of a possible quick fix, and the other two are already taken, then here is your next best possible chance. The best part is that seven of his last ten games are against weak pass coverage teams so that is working well in Hasselbeck’s favor.

Running backs
1. Shonne Greene NYJ – He just turned into a decent pickup based on the fact that Leon Washington broke his leg on his first offensive play last week. Now they will rely on Greene to give Thomas Jones blows for the rest of the year. He will get plenty of carries because the Jets run the ball a lot especially with their struggling passing offense. Greene will come in and run the ball when the defense is already worn down from Jones, and will get the carries when the jets are just wasting time.

2. LeSean McCoy Phi – Well what do ya know Brian Westbrook is hurt again and this time McCoy is here to get his reps on Sunday. With the way Philly’s offense goes, LeSean has an opportunity to score at any moment of the game and will rack up both rushing and receiving yards. He is available in over a fourth of all ESPN leagues and will become a nice asset to your hurting fantasy backfield.

3. Beanie Wells Ari – He has had more carries in two out of the cardinals’ last three football games than Tim Hightower. Arizona is clearly making way for their running back of the future. He keeps improving week by week and now that they are giving Beanie the ball about twelve times a game he has opportunities to produce. The cards claim that Hightower is still the starter, but the only thing that matters is who gets the ball the most and that will produce the better stat sheets on Sunday.

Wideouts
1. Hakeem Nicks NYG – Nicks is one of the hottest receivers in football over the last four weeks. He has caught a touchdown pass in four straight games and is averaging over 70 yards a game. The best part is that he is still a free agent in over 55 percent of fantasy leagues! Get him before someone else does.

2. Austin Collie Ind – Him and Peyton Manning have developed a nice relationship together, they have hooked up in the end zone four times in the last three weeks. If you are looking to get rid of Steve Smith or just need another guy here it is. You know the colts are going to throw a lot when you have one of the best quarterbacks in the league under center. Another positive is the fact that he has an awesome schedule working in his favor for the rest of the year. So use some common sense and grab him while he is still there.

3. Michael Crabtree – People this is potentially one of the greater chances to have an amazing guy on your roster. In his pro debut he caught 5 passes for 56 yards. He is going to be one of the top options on this San Francisco football team. Give him two more weeks and he will be straight deadly.

Sleeper

Steve Slaton RB Hou – Slaton has started to heat up this season in his last two games. He is averaging more than 100 yards from the line of scrimmage in the last two performances. This really bodes well for him since he is playing against the Buffalo Bills who are giving up more than 170 rushing yards a game, which is worst in the league. If he is every going to have a chance to significantly raise his mediocre 3.1 yards per a carry it has to be this week. I am predicting 128 rushing yards to go along with 55 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Deep Sleeper

Marc Bulger QB Stl – I know everybody is probably thinking what on earth could make me choose a guy on a team that hasn’t won a game to be a sleeper of the week. Well if there is any chance of the Rams to look good on one Sunday this year, they need to show it now. They are playing the lions who are giving up over 250 passing yards a game. So to prove that I can be daring, I am predicting that Bulger we pass for more than 230 yards and throw 3 tds and an interception.

Pulling the Veil Back

October 30, 2009 By: Amanda Ferris Category: Halloween

Haunted HouseHalloween is such a happy and almost frivolous holiday that people can often forget its more serious side: honoring your ancestors. Different faiths and different cultures have often honored the end of October or the first of November as a time to remember their ancestors: in Mexico there is El Día de los Muertos, for Roman Catholics, they celebrate All Souls Day, and many Pagan faiths honor those who have gone before at their Samhain rituals.

No matter what your ethnicity or your spiritual beliefs, you too can remember your beloved family members and even pets who have passed on. There are many different ways to honor those who have gone before you and they range from elaborate rituals such as The Dumb Supper to as simple as leaving flowers at family members gravesites.

If you’d like to honor your ancestors’ memory this Halloween, here is a list with a few simple ideas:

• Visit the grave of your favorite family member and leave flowers. Feel free to include a little card or note for them in which you tell them about what has been going on in your life if you wish.
• You can set aside a space on a shelf where you put pictures of beloved family members and pets and surround it with flowers. You can also include candles and perhaps food offerings the way those who celebrate The Day of the Dead or Samhain do, but that’s optional.
• Depending on how spiritually inclined you are, all faiths can benefit from lighting a candle and saying a prayer for your ancestors.
• Cooking a beloved family member’s favorite meal is an excellent way to honor someone’s memory.
• Get together with family and friends and swap funny stories about those who have gone before and celebrate their lives with laughter and love.
• A good way to remember deceased pets is to volunteer at a local pet adoption or animal shelter. You can always make a monetary donation to an animal shelter as well.
• Start researching your family tree-you might find some interesting tidbits about your family history!

No matter what you chose, just remember to have a good time in remember your beloved family members and pets. Laughter and good cheer are always good ingredients in honoring a loved one’s memory!
