Ex-Playmate and WWE Diva Goes 2-0 in MMA

November 30, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, Videos, WWE / Pro Wrestling

LaTasha MarzollaCheck out the video of former WWE Diva and Playboy model, LaTasha Marzolla getting her second MMA win.Move over Gina Carano, Marzolla is taking the female MMA fighting world by storm. LaTasha Marzolla is now 2-0 in MMA competition. Marzolla has looked great in two bouts, including her recent decision win over undefeated Kate McGray. The win comes from a recent Tuff-N-Uff Future Stars of MMA Event.

The female MMA fighting is widening by the day. The popularity of MMA and Gina Carano has inspired an upsurge in female MMA fighters. While Carano was such a novelty early on because of her great looks, there are plenty of former models crossing over into the fighting genre. Marzolla’s background in both Playboy and pro wrestling make her a natural star for any female MMA promotion. I look for big things out of Marzolla in 2010.

On a sidenote, a funny moment in the fight comes in the final round. Marzolla is getting pounded in the corner when a fan yells out, “Circle out LaTasha!” LaTasha circles out and gets out of trouble immediately. I just find it funny when MMA fighters are taking coaching advice from the audience and even funnier when it works!

Halloween Is Over, But It Still lives on 24/7

November 30, 2009 By: Haya Elkadi Category: Entertainment, Halloween

Freddy Krueger Nightmare on Elm StreetThe costumes have been stuffed into the back of our closets, pictures were taken, candy was distributed and memories were most definitely made. In my house, as elsewhere, an austere feeling has set itself right next where my pumpkins once called home. In a perfect world, Halloween would be once a week. But for us who live here, the only reminders of Halloween are the classic thrillers created by director that understood the beauty that fear can evoke. My personal top four favorite scary films are:

Rosemary’s Baby: Okay, so this movie isn’t exactly going to make you jump out of your seats screaming, but this 1968 creeper fest has lived to become one of the most creepiest movies created. 41 years later, this movie not only included one of the most unique plots, it also had of the most convincing portrayal of the devil ever seen. Demonic Movies are rarely done right, and Rosemary’s Baby is the great exception.

Order the Rosemary’s Baby DVD by clicking here.

Nightmare On Elm Street: This movie is also one of the most depressing ones out there because a younger Johnny Depp gets devoured and as an avid supporter of the man, that scene is one I just need fast forward over. Anyway, the dreams, or should I say nightmares of children come to reality when a murderer named Freddy (have you heard of him??) stalks them until death.

Salem’s Lot: Besides being my all-time favorite Stephen King Novels next to Carrie, this is a great movie. Vampires suddenly move into a neighborhood and one by one suddenly begin multiplying and feeding on the townspeople. A great juxtaposition to all the new vampire love movies out there (*cough*cough* twilight)

Saw: By Saw, I only refer to the first one. Although the other five are quite scary and are not short of any gore, the plot of them slowly revolves around the teenage cliché scary movie. This Saw follows the horrors that two men face while being held by Jigsaw, a serial killer. Quickly, this movie becomes one of physiological manipulation and a disgusting outcome.

Week of WWE Wrestling: 11/21/2009 to 11/27/2009

Jesse VenturaThe Body Rules the Fallout of Survivor Series 2009!

After Survivor Series on the 22nd, Jesse “the Governor” Ventura was our guest host on Monday Night Raw’s “Raw’s Thanksgiving.” In my personal opinion, I feel “the Body” ruled the fallout of this year’s Survivor Series!

When Raw started, Orton came out and exclaimed to Ventura that he wanted a shot at John Cena and the WWE Championship. After this, Ventura came out. He was announced as Jesse “Governor” Ventura. I think that’s odd, how Ventura always was known as “the Body” or “the Mind” in the wrestling business. But anyways…. Ventura said he’s a “revolutionary governor,” and he won’t give Orton a title shot. In which, Ventura said that he’s getting tired of the same old guys getting title shots and not having new guys get a shot at the world title. In which, Jesse set up a “Breakthrough Battle Royal” for latter in the night. And the winner will challenge his brands world champion.

During the night, we saw the encounter of Jesse and Mr. McMahon backstage. It was quite interesting of an encounter, to be honest with you. McMahon told Jesse until he gets better competition; he won’t face Jesse on Raw in a match. Ventura said he wasn’t the guest host to face McMahon that night, no, he is back for one thing, and that’s to go back on the mic with his old broadcast partner, Vincent Kennedy McMahon!

But not wanting to recap the whole Raw, because one can go to WWE’s website to check that out, but let’s discuss my opinion of the main event!

And what memories came back during the “Breakthrough Battle Royal” with Vince McMahon doing play-by-play and Jesse Ventura doing color. With McMahon coming out to “Obsession” by Animotion, which was the theme song of Saturday Night’s Main Event back when those two did play-by-play and color back then. With the song “Obsession,” McMahon was wearing a tuxedo and a red bow-tie, doing the “McMahon Power Walk,” which gave me a great belly laugh.

With cheap shots at one another and great lines from almost two decades back, we were able to hear “Shut up, McMahon!” hollered out by Jesse Ventura. Another thing that made me smile from this six minute moment from Raw this past week was after the commercial break, when the guys were still making their ways to the ring, when McMahon said, “Welcome back to Monday Night Raw (in his old Vince McMahon voice)!,” Ventura made a comment saying something along the lines of: “It’s weird not hearing you say Saturday Night’s Main Event, McMahon….”

After hearing these two guys on air calling the battle royal (by the way, Sheamus won the battle royal and now is facing Cena at WWE TLC in a Tables match for the WWE title), it made me miss the old days of play-by-play and color commentating, when the play-by-play man was the face and the color commentator was the heel. I feel like McMahon should come back as play-by-play and hire Ventura as the color and only do the main events on Raw. I believe that would be awesome!

But to wrap this up, this is Eric Darsie from Minnesota, chilling after a Thanksgiving weekend, goodbye!

Is Bute Superior to the Super Six?

November 30, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Boxing, Sports

X Lucian ButeIf the Six Man tournament in the Super Middleweight Division is not enough to shake it up, how about a rematch, and we all wanted one, because the first was so controversial, between undefeated IBF champ Lucian Bute and Librado Andrade. They showed what happened in their first fight. Max Kellerman said Bute got knocked out twice and won the fight, and it was the worst kind of hometown refereeing he has ever seen. It’s true, but besides Emanuel Augustus getting robbed and jobbed in Burton’s hometown on ESPN, this fight was for a title on a pay network. They had a clock and showed that instead of a ten count Bute got a 21 count. Kellerman also said that Andrade should be the champion. So there is a compelling match up between the “other” super middleweight champion. In the tournament, now, we have undefeated Andre Ward with the WBA title, and undefeated Carl Froch with the WBC title. Well here was undefeated IBF champ Bute trying to state his claim that he is the best.

It bothered me that it was still taking place in Bute’s hometown. Look at Mikkel Kessler, the favorite coming into the tournament. He fought his whole career in his hometown and was a 42-1 champion. But when he came to America against Andre Ward, he got beat up bad, and lost. Also, Froch, in his hometown, got a decision over Andre Dirrell. I don’t agree with that, and neither does anyone else. So home field advantage and referees are important.

Coming in, Bute stated that he was obsessed with fighting Andrade again. Andrade spoke of how he likes to get hit and how it gives him more energy. Well, in the first two rounds, Bute squeaked by, but looked a bit hesitant, maybe nervous, which is not good. Andrade was calm, and stalked him, like usual, came forward, got hit, and kept coming. Kellerman’s description of him earlier was a heavy bag that punched back. He never goes away. In the third, Bute hit Andrade with a beautiful straight left that would stagger most, Andrade didn’t blink. Even though Bute probably won the first three rounds, going into the fourth, we still didn’t know what would happen, until out of clinch, Andrade gets knocked down. The reason… he didn’t see the punch.

It wasn’t even a hard punch, it was one Andrade walked straight into, and didn’t see, and as Frans Botha once said, “I didn’t see it coming, it’s like getting hit by Mike Tyson” – on the canvas, Andrade smiled, winked at the camera, and got back up, and started stalking again. Not too much later, and this had nothing to do with the first knockdown, Bute hit Andrade with a perfect body shot. It was said Bute got 21 seconds, well, Andrade wouldn’t get up until around 25 seconds later, yes, he was counted out. He tried to get up, but could not, he got hit with a body shot that paralyzed him, and a tough guy like him would not stay down, he just couldn’t help it. It was a great victory, and payback, for Bute, who is the number one Super middleweight right now, ironically, above the entire Super Six tournament. That could change, definitely. We are awaiting Stage 2 of the Super Middleweight Tournament, which looks like this…

Abraham – Dirrell
Kessler – Froch (WBC Title)
Ward – Taylor (WBA Title)

The top three fighter’s in the division look like this…
1. Bute 25-0 (20) IBF Champ
2. Ward 21-0 (13) WBA Champ
3. Froch 26-0 (21) WBC Champ

Abraham is undefeated, also, fighting Dirrell, who got ripped off and has one loss because of it. That’s the fight I’m looking forward to most. I think Ward beats Taylor. And Kessler should beat Froch, but the way Kessler got beat up by Ward, and the fact that Froch is undefeated with a title makes me wonder.

But, as I said, with these six, adding Bute, plus the talent of Allan Green and Sakio Bika, and Robert Steiglitz who is fighting Edison Miranda soon, we’ll have to wait until this tournament is over to see what the division looks like, and when it’s over, what happens next.

Deja Vu For Young And Leinart – Video

November 29, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: NFL / NCAA Football, Sports, Videos

Vince YoungIn a moment right out of the Rose Bowl, Vince Young did it to Matt Leinart again and scored a touchdown to win the game as time wound down. Vince Young drove the Tennessee Titans 99 yards, converted three fourth-downs, and used just one time out to provide one of the best finishes to an NFL regular season game you will ever see. Young’s game-winning touchdown was as clutch as it comes, and once again stole another win from Matt Leinart. Check out the video of Vince Young’s game-winning touchdown drive below.

This was one of those great sports finishes that will give you chills. The irony here is that it was Young’s mistake to close out the first half that necessitated the theatrics. Young had the ball with 0:08 left in the first half at Arizona’s 11-yard line. Young wound up holding on to the ball too long and took a sack, which ended the half and cost the Titans an easy three points. The irony there is if Young didn’t make the mistake, the Titans get the field goal, and the game-winning drive ends on a far less theatrical field goal. Maybe Vince just wanted to ensure another Rose Bowl finish?

Jeff Fisher is getting a lot of praise for turning around the Tennessee Titans 0-6 season. Fisher switched quarterbacks coming out of the bye and has gone undefeated since starting Vince Young. Jeff Fisher should be roasted and criticized the same way he has been praised, for keeping someone as talented as Vince Young on the bench. If not for owner Bud Adams asking that Young play, one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL would still be sitting on the bench. This is nothing I would be proud of I were Jeff Fisher. Personally, I think Fisher should be on the hot seat for costing his team six games with such a ridiculous move.

As for Vince Young, it is obvious that this kid is a legitimate NFL starting quarterback. You don’t win as many NFL games as he has won by accident. Plus, this guy has been winning games in the clutch going back to his days in Texas. Young had three back-to-back fourth quarter wins in his NFL rookie season! There is something to be said about a quarterback that constantly finds wayS to win. He may not be the smartest quarterback at times (see the above first-half ending sack against the Cardinals), but he always gives you a chance to win. The amazing part of this story is that if not for Bud Adams, he would probably still be on the bench. Hopefully Jeff Fisher traded in his Peyton Manning jersey for a Vince Young jersey.

I can’t think of a better season for game-winning touchdowns than the 2009 NFL season and it’s not even December yet.

Beat The Shark NFL Pick ‘Ems Contest For NFL Week 12

November 28, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Contests, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Beat The Shark CandiceBy the time you read this all of the Thanksgiving festivities will be over. All the food will be eaten, and the family and friends will go back to life as they know it. I just simply wanted to give thanks for the fact that last week was well behind me after getting clobbered in this contest. So as I sat and talked with old friends at my 20 year high school reunion, and heard about how funny it was to watch me get beat by girls in a football pick contest, I realized it was tme to get serious!

With that here I stand with my 11th installment of “Beat The Shark”. Last week, I could only manage 1 victory while my opponent Morisa Conner had a great day going 3-1. Hey I guess it isn’t always going to be my week, and I learned a valued lesson about running my mouth. So here is how it all stands: The ladies and I are tied with 5 wins each in the overall weeks, and they have the slight edge in games with a record of 19-17 against my 18-17-1, time to shape up here!

This week I attempt to work the revenge factor to motivate myself. Remember all the way back to week 2 (yes the season has gone by that fast) when I was destroyed by New York girl Karyn Albanese? Well this week I’m going one on one with her sister Candice, and I will try and settle the score. As always I have found another fun and exciting opponent with the beautiful looks and the desire to show me up! Candice admits she’s not quite as football educated as her sister, but she makes it quite clear that it won’t take that to beat me.”Hey you! I can’t really promise you anything but I’ll try! I live in Staten Island and I have been bartending for the last 12 yrs. I was born into a Jets household but I do love the Eagles. Haha my interests! I’m def a reality show junkie/couch potato!!! Now why I’m interested in beating you, lol that’s an easy one! I wanna see if someone like me who doesn’t really know much about the game can kick ur butt you big shot sweater vest wearing facebook junkie!” Ok is that the biggest call out I have had yet or what? Hey you can pick on my clothes, you can pick on my internet obsessions, but nobody mocks my picks (well they can if I don’t win huh?).

Ok so now on to the picks, let’s see if I can get back on the winning track or if I get swept by the lovely sisters.

Candice chose:

Dolphins -3.5 at Buffalo
Vikings -11 vs Bears
Colts -4 at Texans
Eagles -8 vs Washington

“The Shark” will take:

Steelers -3 at Ravens
Buccaneers +13 at Falcons
Seahawks -3 at Rams
Titans +3 vs Cardinals

Ok so my picks may not look anywhere near as good as Candice’s photo, but I will give it my best. Good luck to her and good luck to everyone in week 12!
