Strikeforce signed the biggest free agent in MMA and seemingly won the Fedor Emelianenko sweepstakes. I say seemingly, because in retrospect I don’t believe Strikeforce were the big winners at all. The big winner yesterday is MMA’s newest mythical figure, Brock Lesnar.

Up until yesterday, I have been a big Fedor fan for years. Not only have I lost all respect for this guy, I won’t even list Fedor as a top heavyweight anymore. How can you when a professional athlete signs with a company for less money and less competition over being tested by the best fighters in the world.

A representative from Strikeforce told MMAJunkie.com yesterday that Fedor will not get an immediate title shot. So Fedor is good enough to get an immediate title shot in the number one company in the world and not Strikeforce? For God’s sakes, the Strikeforce heavyweight title hasn’t even been defended in almost two years!

Strikeforce can try and shine this as much as they want but MMA fans aren’t buying it. The executive also said, “He will get top competition in Strikeforce as he would’ve in the UFC. There are a lot of potential opponents you could put in front of him that could give him very tough fights right now.” Oh really?

I don’t think even the biggest Strikeforce fan believes that Strikeforce can match UFC in heavyweight competition. There are only three potential opponents for Fedor as of signing day. Brett Rogers, Fabrico Werdum, and the heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem who once again hasn’t defended his title in almost two years.

I am a Strikeforce fan, but their die-hard fans are really drinking the Brett Rogers kool-aid. I am tired of hearing and reading that Brett Rogers is going to offer Fedor top competition. The guy had one lucky punch against a guy with a glass chin. I am nowhere close to ready to accept this guy as the real deal. A win over Rogers only supports those who say that Fedor doesn’t fight top competition.

Why Strikeforce would even make this deal is beyond me? With Affliction gone, Strikeforce has now made themselves UFC’s top enemy. It isn’t right, but UFC will now begin running free shows and specials directly against Strikeforce. These specials could potentially run on ESPN.

Can Fedor really look himself in the mirror this morning and see the best fighter in the world? Fedor’s potential opponents in UFC included Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, Cheick Kongo, Cain Vasquez, Shane Carwin, Mirko Cro Cop and Frank Mir. There is one guy that is probably looking in the mirror with a big smile today and his name is Brock Lesnar.

At the end of the day, there is only one conclusion you can draw in all of this. Fedor doesn’t want to fight the best in the world. Fedor would have made millions more dollars in UFC. Fedor would have had an immediate title shot. Yet, the great Fedor Emelianenko took a deal with a company that can’t come close to offering him any of this. Why else would he take this deal other than the fear of the UFC unknown?

It is a no-win situation for Fedor. If Fedor runs through his three Strikeforce opponents, MMA fans will call him out for facing lesser competition. If Fedor loses to anyone in Strikeforce, he will be called a fraud. The biggest winner in all of this is one guy who isn’t even Strikeforce and his name is Brock Lesnar.

No matter what happens from here with Lesnar, he will now be seen as the guy Fedor ran away from. Lesnar was ready to go and on board to fight Fedor immediately in UFC. It was the more experienced Fedor, not the still-green Lesnar who didn’t want this match. The mystique that will now surround Lesnar is the same kind of mystique that surrounded Fedor Emelianenko for the last eight years.

Brock Lesnar doesn’t need to get angry anymore when asked about Fedor. Brock is the one that wanted this fight, not Fedor. Brock is now officially MMA’s newest bad a$$. Brock Lesnar just won back his MMA fans. Well, until he flips them off again in two months.
