Getting Hired As a Video Game Tester – Debunking the Many Myths That Surround Video Game

July 31, 2009 By: Guest Blogger Category: Video Games

Video Game TesterThe video game industry has slowly become a juggernaut. It’s well into the billions of dollars in the revenue department and appears to be recession proof. Even as so many industries struggle, people are purchasing video games more than ever. Many people who are avid gamers have considered the possibility of landing a job as a video game tester.

Getting hired as a video game tester is possible, but you need to separate myth from reality first. Their are many websites out there that are interested in helping people find testing jobs. Some will also help you with the application process. The problem is that many of their pitch pages glamorize video game testing as an easy way to earn a living while sitting around your bachelor pad getting fat on pizza.

You can apply for and get a video game testing job. But before you call the pizza dude lets look at some of the more bogus things that you will read online.

  • Game testers get to play unreleased titles to see if they are entertaining. The truth is that usually the gaming companies don’t care if you think the game is entertaining. This has already been decided by the gaming company. Your job as a tester is to catalog bugs and glitches in game play.
  • Game testers can work from home. Ah, this is one of those big ones that you see on many of the websites online. The truth is that in almost every case the testers that are getting paid are working on site. People often take on beta testing jobs at home but these jobs almost never pay a salary.
  • Getting hired as a video game tester will mean a big salary in the $50-$90 an hour range. This is another one of those things you see on many websites. I have yet to see a testing job that paid anything close to that amount. Wages usually start in the $9-$12 an hour range. Many testers will get overtime so they will make a bit more from time to time. Annual salaries under the 30K mark are fairly common for new testers without a college degree.
  • I’m not trying to discourage you from following your dream of becoming a video game tester. It’s just important that you know fact from fiction before you pursue your dream job in the field of video games.
