BestFantasyFootballBlogs – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em NFL Week 5

October 10, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Matt Schaub Here we are again football fans! Lots to talk about in fantasy football this week. Braylon Edwards is now a New York Jet, Michael Crabtree finally signed with the San Francisco 49ers, Donovan McNabb returns this week and so on. If you’ve been following my column, you will notice that I’m starting to heat up, and I hope you have been smart enough to take some good advice from me. Two weeks ago I predicted the rebirth of Matt Forte, and last week the same with Steve Slaton. Hmm, I’d say it’s looking good, so let’s see what I can give you for week 5.

Quarterback:

Flash

Donovan McNabb, Eagles vs Tampa Bay

Sharks’ Flash and Crash – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em NFL Week 4

October 01, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Jay Cutler Hello again loyal readers and fantasy football people. Well here we are in Week 4 of the 2009 NFL season ( seems to be going fast huh? ). Ok so here’s where we seperate the true draft gurus from everybody else playing as the bye weeks are now in effect.

Do you have the back-ups good enough to survive? Do you feel you may need some extra advice going into this week? Well don’t worry because as an added bonus to my fantasy start ‘em or sit em segment known as “Flash and Crash” I will also offer some waiver wire pick up ideas and some good guys to start this week. So sit back and relax, read along and go get em in week 4!

Ok so my coulmn isn’t always perfect but when I mention guys like Johnny Knox and he does his deed it makes me feel pretty good. Or when I say Matt Schaub is good for 3 TDS and he throws 3 TDS, well you get the point, so here is what I like this week.

Sharks’ Flash and Crash – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em NFL Week 3

September 25, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Joe Flacco By now im sure we have all settled in to our Fantasy Football seasons. We have a pretty good feel for who will show up for us on a weekly basis and who needs some close attention. Ok so “The Shark” may not nail it every week, but you have to admit some good advice comes from the weekly “advice column”. So, without any further delay here is this weeks installment of my personal start em or sit em, also known as “Flash and Crash”

Quarterbacks:

Flash:

Eli Manning, Giants at Tampa Bay

Whether we want to believe it or not, Eli Manning is off to a pretty good start this season, and what better way to celebrate that then to visit this woeful Buc defense. Tampa has been shredded by Tony Romo in week 1 and Trent Edwards in week 2. With guys like Steve Smith and Mario Manningham stepping up in New York, Manning is becoming a better option week in and week out. Expect at least 2 TDs from Eli this week.

Matt Schaub, Texans vs Jacksonville

After seeing Schaub last week against the Titans i’m a believer again. Ok so he flubbed in week one, then again so did Tom Brady against those same Jets. When you can get the ball to Andre Johnson, you have to be a top consideration most weeks. Schaub is finding the weapons, and the Jags defense watched Kurt Warner break an accuracy record last week. Schaub won’t be quite as perfect, but to think he will throw 3 TDs this week is not crazy.

Joe Flacco, Ravens vs Cleveland

I sure hope Flacco doesn’t read Flash and Crash. I will admit I have not been Flacco friendly and he has made me pay for it. Does not seem to matter that he has an average WR group. He finds men down field, is using Todd Heap well, and he has a great 3-headed monster rushing attack to open the field. This week he sees “Man-Gina”(my new nickname for Man-Genious) and the very sad Browns. If Kyle Orton can get a couple then you can easily mark Flacco down for a few as well.

Crash

Brett Favre, Vikings vs San Francisco

Hmm, this may be a tad risky, but I have seen very little to make me think that the 49ers are soft on defense this year. Granted they play on the road, but it doesnt seem to shake me up too much. Last time these 2 teams met, Adrian Peterson was humbled and so was the entire Vikes offense. I expect Peterson to be more then pumped and the Vikes will run heavily. Favre will just be the hand-off dummy most likely.

Jason Campbell, Redskins at Detroit

“Yeah, but its the Lions”. Ha and last week it was the Rams. It doesn’t seem to matter, Campbell and this offense just stink. They could only muster 9 points against a hopeless Rams team at HOME! So why do I believe any different this week. The Lions were killed by Drew Brees, but who won’t be this year? They did decent with Favre, and even half a Favre is better then a whole Campbell, cut this guy if ya have him, he just stinks!

Mark Sanchez, Jets vs Tennessee

When will I learn to stop bashing these Jets? Well not this week! I know they were torched last week, but I firmly believe that Fisher and the boys will be ready. Sanchez has been a good game manager so far and has made a believer out of many. Somehow I don’t see him being sharp in what should be a low scoring affair. Sooner or later the Titans will show some blitz, and when better to start then aganst a rook! One TD for Sanchez, maybe? I wouldn’t count on much else.

Sleeper Pick:

Kyle Orton, Broncos

Handle with care: Matt Ryan,Falcons

Running Backs

Flash

Fred Jackon, Bills vs New Orleans

Theee best story of the young season has been the very talented Jackson. When I took this guy in a few of my fantasy leagues, people said, “Hey great 3 week pick up” with a snicker. Dick Jaroun is already on thin ice as coach in Buffalo, and if he makes way with open arms for Marshawn Lynch and disses this guy, then he should be canned! Jackson has the hands, the speed, and the strength to be an elite NFL back. He has been wonderful so far this year and the Saints like to make it a high scoring game, so i’m going to pencil in Freddy for 2 TDs!

Matt Forte, Bears at Seattle

It’s make or break time for Forte owners this week for sure. A first-round pick in many fantasy drafts, Forte hs been man-handled, albeit by two very tough run defenses. This week he goes to Seattle, where Frank Gores tire marks are still fresh from his 206 yard game last week. Forte caught some passes last week, and the Bears seem ready to utilize him to his full potential. If Forte doesnt get 120 total yards and a TD I may never watch football again.( Yeah Right!)

Darren Sproles, Chargers vs Miami

You start Sproles, You start Sproles, You start Sproles period. I don’t care about L.T.’s status, this guy goes off on everybody! Maybe Miami has a game plan for him, but don’t count on it, he produces, umm period! You start Sproles. Did I mention that you start Sproles?

Crash

Cedric Benson, Bengals vs Pittsburgh

Nobody is more pleased at what Benson has been doing then me (well maybe the Bengals). A 13th round pick in 2 of my drafts, Benson has been a real sleeper so far, but its reality time, and here comes the big boys! The Steeler defense made little lambs out of usual bulls Chris Johnson and Matt Forte so far this season, so I don’t see Benson doing what he has done in the first 2 weeks. Although he suddenly has found hands and is catching more, I just don’t like the match up. But, keep an eye on this guy in flexer leagues or 3 back leagues, hes producing.

Frank Gore, 49ers at Minnesota

Gore had an incredible week last week in Seattle, and although you kind of root for this dark horse, you can’t trust anyone running against the Vikings. One of the best run defenses the last 3 years in the league, the Vikings have been tough to run on again this year. I still think Gore can make a little noise, but there are some much better options this week. Keep Frank well rested for week 4, he’ll thank you for it.

Thomas Jones, Jets vs Tennessee

I understand that someone has to move the ball for the Jets after I told all of you to not play Sanchez and now not to play Jones. I think the Jets are best served using the multi-talented Leon Washington more this week. Washington has the speed and the hands to create some room against this tough defense. Jones is too much of a “right into the line” kind of runner for my taste, and the Titans sure do fill up the middle well. Look past Jones this week.

Sleeper: Kevin Smith, Detroit

Handle with care: Steve Slaton, Texans

Wide Receiver

FlashMarques Colston, Saints at Buffalo

Heeees Baaaaaack! Yes Colston fans, the guy you all shuttered to pick this year because of past injuries is blazing hot so far this year. 4 TDs in his first 2 games is nothing to be afraid of fantasy owners. I know the Bills seem to have some strange magic at home but this guy is freakish so far. Drew Brees will get his just about every week it appears so why not bank on his favorite target for let’s say, oh I don’t know, 2 more this week?

Calvin Johnson, Lions vs Washinton

If you watch football then you will know quickly what I mean. Does DeAngelo Hall want out of yet another city? Hall has looked hopeless the last 2 weeks and has gotten burned by some very poor receivers. So enter one of the games best, the well skilled Johnson. The Redskins are just doing it like they always do, pay a ton and get little in return, plus Stafford likes this guy, and hey who doesn’t. Johnson will find the end zone for sure and if you’re in a point per catch league you can count on 10 easy from Johnson.

DeSean Jackson, Eagles vs Kansas City

I know, last week I said don’t dare, but the Eagles find ways to get him the ball. He had a beautiful 71 yard TD last week and the Chiefs are not a huge threat on defense. Yes having Jackson do wildcat formations may be dangerous, but between that, punt returns, and receiving Jackosn is finding a way to get numbers and you should find a way to get him into your lineup!

Crash

Braylon Edwards, Browns at Baltimore

There are few people that are bigger fans of Edwards them me, but this is an article not a popularity contest. Edwards never does much against the Ravens, although they have looked a bit soft on defense this year. Edwards was more active last week but don’t expect huge stuff this week, and if the Browns lose don’t expect much more of Brady Quinn either.

Donald Driver, Packers at St. Louis

Same beginning as last choice. I love Driver and think he is the ultimate team player and professional. He hasn’t lost a step even at 35, and he always finds his way to 1000 yards. So why crash? Well last time they met he was limited, and not to mention his counter-part Greg Jennings was blanked last week. You have to believe that Jennings went to his team and said something like, “Hey guys make room for me this week, I’m ready to explode”. Driver is terrific at drawing coverage around the field, but this week I think he plays more the decoy and we love him for it.

Justin Gage, Titans at New York Jets

It seems that Kerry Collins likes this guy, but it also seems after 2 weeks that any receiver a QB seems to like, that means Rex Ryan likes to send Darelle Revis against them. Revis has shut down both Andre Johnson and Randy Moss so far this year, so if he is spending time covering Gage, then Gage should be ready to do alot of blocking.

Sleeper: Johnny Knox, Bears

Handle with care: Santana Moss, Redskins

Defense:

Flash

Eagles vs Kansas City

Ravens vs Cleveland

Giants vs Tampa Bay

Crash

Rams vs Green Bay

Bills vs New Orleans

Jaguars at Houston

Sharks’ Flash and Crash – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em Week 2

September 17, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Brett Favre Minnesota Vikings Ok so how many of us started Buffalo RB Fred Jackson in week 1? How many people thought it was sensable to sit Chris Johnson? Well no matter what you thought last week it means nothing at this moment, because in fantasy football you are only as good as your current week. So I’m here again to bring you another edition of my start ‘em or sit ‘em segment known as “Flash and Crash”, plus one sleeper and one player to start with caution.

Quarterback:

Flash

1. Trent Edwards, Buffalo vs The Bucs
Ok, so maybe its a quick jump on the band wagon, but Edwards was sharp last Monday night against the Patriots and now enters Tampas defense which was shredded by Dallas. You don’t expect Terrell Owens to play this poorly 2 weeks in a row do you? Plus Fred Jacksons ability to run will make room to pass.

2. Brett Favre, Minnesota at The Lions
Yes we know Favre plays poorly in the domes, but last week it was proven by Drew Brees that the Lions defense is actually (get this) worse than we first thought. Also it may be safe to assume that the Lions will be stacking the box in an attempt to slow down Adrian Peterson. So while it won’t be gunslinger Favre, I still expect a couple of TD’s for Brett.

3. Ben Rothelisberger, Pittsburgh at The Bears
Last week I said to sit Ben, and well he only posted 1 TD against the mighty Titans defense. Despite that he showed signs of life and it appears that this Steeler club will have to throw plenty to move the ball. The artist formerly known as “Fast” Willie Parker looks more like Peter Parkers Aunt Mae. Also with the season ending injury to Brian Urlacher the Bears defense suddenly looks weak.

Crash

1. Carson Palmer, Cincy at The Packers
So Carson is back huh? Don’ t tell that to the Broncos defense who kept him in check last week. The Packers are fresh off of a 4 interception game against Jay Cutler and now welcome the lowly Bengals to the tundra. This should be a long day of Tweeting for Ocho.

2. Joe Flacco, Ravens vs The Chargers
This may be a bit of a risk by me, but the Charger defense looks like it can be run on, but it seems to be decent against the pass. Flacco had a nice week last week against a Chief defense that isnt’t thought of as tough, so it will be interesting to see how he plays on the road against a more agressive squad.

3. Kevin Kolb, Philadelphia vs The Saints
No brainer, maybe? Andy Reid will have the stripped down version of his West Coast offense on display this week. The Saints defense isn’t world beaters, but Kolb has looked meek in his spot performances so far. If he has any success it will be based on the screen pass mostly.

Sleeper Pick: Mark Sanchez, Jets

Handle with care: Philip Rivers, Chargers

Running Back

Flash

1. Chris Johnson, Tennessee vs The Texans
I can’t help but wonder what it will take for Jeff Fisher to realize that a “2 shift for Johnson, 1 shift for LenDale White” formula will solve? Against a very tough Steelers run defense Johnson managed 57 yards, but had 2 big burst to prove he is the fastest back in the league. Houston isn’t real tough up front, so Johnson should have a big day.

2. Clinton Portis, Washington vs The Rams
Julius Jones rushed for 118 yards against this Rams defense last week. Julius Jones!?

3. Larry Johnson, Kansas City vs The Raiders
This is not a misprint. The once super-stud Johnson looked weak last week against the Ravens, but then again most backs do. What many may not realize for not looking at the big picture is that before L.T. went down last week he was averaging over 5 yards per carry and Sproles had a big day as well. The Raider defense is ok against the pass, but I’m not sold on the run. Perhaps one last big fling for L.J.?

Crash
1. Matt Forte, Chicago vs The Steelers
This one pains me as I love Fortes stuff. However if Jay Cutler will not throw him the ball then Fortes game takes a big step back. He is a great runner but so is Titans back Chris Johnson, and the Steelers kept him in a bottle last week. Unless Forte gets into the passing game, he should be in your “passing lane” this week.

2. Cedric Benson, Cincy at The Packers
I know Cedge is looking better and making a nice comeback, but this new 3-4 defensive scheme of the Packers is looking tough. Chicagos Matt Forte looked lost in an attempt to find holes last week, and thats with a decent offensive line. The question mark filled line in Cincy will appear over-matched and Benson will have a fair day at best.

3. Mike Bell, New Orleans at The Eagles
I posted Bell because I know he’s a big waiver wire darling this week. However once the Eagles defense settled down last week they held super star back DeAngelo Williams to just 47 yards rushing. Bell looked red hot last week, but that was against the Lions, and Drew Brees and his big arm had the Lions clueless as to who to cover. I don’t see fooling the Eagles quite as easily.

Sleeper Pick: Cadillac Williams, Bucs
Handle with care: Stephen Jackson, Rams

Wide Receiver

Flash
1. Reggie Wayne, Indy at The Dolphins
With Anthony Gonzalez down for 3-6 weeks, the electrifying Wayne expects more double teams, but has that ever stopped Peyton Manning before? Wayne is sure to go nuts in his first real true solo act. No more Harrison and now no proven number 2. I think Reggie steps up and follows last weeks crazy effort with another big one here.

2. Greg Jennings, Green Bay vs The Benglas
I no longer get concerned as to who they play, Jennings is just mammoth. The supporting cast in Green Bay is talented and it always adds space for Jennings. With no disrespect to some of the big names in the game today, Jennings just may be the best all around receiver in the business. Add to it his “im just going out and playing” attitude and you have the makings of a guy who you will never dare bench!

3. Terrell Owens, Buffalo vs The Bucs
I saw Roy Williams and Miles Austin and even Patrick Crayton do bad things to this defense last week. I think it is more then safe to say that Owens went to Trent Edwards to remind him that he is on his team now. T.O. will not be out played by his former mates against the same defense you can bet on that. He will get lots of looks and I think he’ll make them work.

Crash

1. Anquan Boldin, Arizona at The Jaguars
A stubborn groin injury mixed in with a stubborn Boldin mixed with a dash of a stubborn coaching staff is a recipe for a big fat meatball for Boldin. It took the Cards 3 quarters last week to find some guy named Fitzgerald and some other guy, an average back named Hightower found all the action for the Cards. The Jags still bring some pass rush so Warner may look his age ths week.

2. Steve Smith, Panthers at The Falcons
I may get lynched when this one goes wrong, but there is something very messy with Jake Delhomme right now, and this aggressive defense may only make things harder. Smith did little to go off last week against the Eagles and it led to Delhommes benching. Could it be that Delhomme is finally going to let the Panthers know how average he really is?

3. DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia vs The Saints
I just don’t trust back up Kevin Kolb with the ability to find guys deep. And if Kolb can’t cut it, we will see Jeff Garcia who loves the 5 yard pass, not suited for Jackson.

Sleeper Pick: Josh Morgan, 49ers
Handle with care: Dwayne Bowe

Defense

Flash

Green Bay vs The Bengals

Washington vs The Rams

Atlanta vs The Panthers

Crash

Philadelphia vs The Saints

Detroit vs The Vikings

Chicago vs The Steelers

Sharks’ Flash and Crash – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em

September 10, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Ben Roethlisberger Hello readers! I must say you are all in for a treat this football season. For the first time here at CamelClutchBlog.com, you will all be seeing some of my great stuff like “Beat The Shark”, Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down, My take on the new LFL, and this neat little nugget known as “Flash and Crash”. For the past few seasons these were just blurbs on various social networks but now are available for you, our faithful readers!

So what is “Flash and Crash”? Well thats simple, the industry term is start em and sit em, I just added my own neat little twist to the words. So each week I will bring you my 3 players that will be “Flashy” and the 3 who will “Crash” in the upcoming fantasy football matchups plus one sleeper and one handle with care from each position. So without any further delay, lets get to it:

Quarterbacks:

Flash

1. Drew Brees, New Orleans vs the Lions
Need we say more, if we do then ok. How do you not start the season with Brees after last years 5069 yard, 34 TD season? Not to mention one of the softest defenses in the league will be lining up across from him. Starting RB Pierre Thomas is also still questionable with a knee injury, so that makes for all the more reason why Brees will look to light it up this week!

2. Kurt Warner, Arizona vs The 49ers
Its hard to pass on Warner given the fact that his WR corp look more like indestructable robots rather then humans. The 49ers lack serious size and strength at the corners and Warner throughout his career has found plenty of success against San Fran. Experts say that new offensive coordinator Russ Grimm will look to run more, but trust me, when he sees this club unable to move the ball down field on the ground, it will change real fast.

3. Matt Schaub, Houston vs The Jets
So what if the Jets are ranked high on many pre-season defense charts, this is Houston,Texas where Mr Schaub was undefeated last year as a starter. The cast has improved greatly here in Houston, and they also have Andre Johnson, who in the eyes of many in the best in the game. With Steve Slaton also catching passes with a certain “Tomlinson-esque” flare, Schaub should have loads to work with and should find good success. If not anything else the Texans questions on defense will make it a shoot out!

Crash
1. Matt Cassel, Kansas City at Baltimore
Cassel is still iffy after his injury last week, and if there is one bad remedy for what ails you, its this talented bunch on defense. Even if Cassel gets the nod he’ll be hard pressed to make alot happen

2. Kyle Orton, Denver at Cincy
Yes the Bengals do give up alot of yards, but they were one of the top teams in turnovers last year, and Kyle Orton showed little progress this pre-season. I would expect that with all the guys they have at RB it will be ground show for Denver in this one.

3. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh at Tennessee
Big Ben has always been known as a slow starter, and this season he kicks it off against one of the more aggressive defenses in football. Sure the Steelers like to go deep, but thats only if Ben has the time. Expect some classic smash mouth in the season opener.

Sleeper Start: Shaun Hill at Arizona
Handle with care: Tony Romo at Tampa Bay

Running Back

Flash
1. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota at the Browns
Why should I even have to write. Its as simple as his nickname, All Day!

2. LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego at the Raiders
L.T. always goes off on Oakland. The Raiders are a mess on defense as Richard Seymour has pulled quite the no-show. This one should be easy.

3. Matt Forte, Chicago at the Packers
Forte is the new triple threat back in the league.Hands,Speed and Strength. The Packers didnt do much to improve this defense and should be focused heavily on QB Jay Cutler. Forte had good success against the Pack last year.

Crash
1. Brandon Jacobs, Giants at Washington
The Giants are a mess at WR, and the ‘Skins added Albert Haynesworth to this tough defensive front 7. Jacobs may do something, but not enough here.

2. Derrick Ward, Tampa Bay vs Dallas
Not only is the matchup tough, but Tampa has named Cadillac Williams the starter today, a huge shock to many and a big let down for Ward owners. Given the chance he can catch it and make plays, but this backfield is crowded!

3. Jamal Lewis, Cleveland vs the Vikings
The Vikings have had the best run defense 2 straight years and have been in the top five 3 straight, not looking good for the aging Lewis

Sleeper Pick: Cedric Benson vs the Broncos
Handle With Care: Chris Johnson vs Pittsburgh

Wide Receiver
1. Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona vs the 49ers
Read Warner and you’ll know. Besides if you dont start this guy you shouldnt be playing!

Flash

2. Braylon Edwards, Cleveland vs the Vikings
With the Vikings tough run defense, the Browns will have to throw it plenty to get on the board. Also Edwards had a sensational pre-season. Dont be afraid of the QB situation, he will be fine.

3. Chad Ochocinco, Cincy vs the Broncos
Now that T.J. is gone this offense is Chads again. Carson Palmer should be ready in time, and Denvers pour pass rush should give Ocho mucho time to get open! This game may be the rebirth of Chad!

Crash
1. Brandon Marshall, Denver at the Bengals
He’s off suspension, but not out of the dog house. Coach McDaniels hasn’t decided if Marshall will play yet, so don’t get all amped up for a angry redemption just yet.

2. Vincent Jackson, San Diego at the Raiders
Two of the toughest words in football, Nmamdi Asomugha, the Raiders shut down corner who clings to receivers like static on a cold day. Oakland can’t stop the run, so Rivers will be handing off alot in this one.

3. Any Giants Wide receiver at Washington
You have to wait and see who,if anyone comes out of this pack. The favorite is Steve Smith, but not ready for a flyer here.

Sleeper: Steve Breaston vs the 49ers
Handle With Care: Devin Hester at the Packers

Defense
Cowboys at Tampa
Chargers at Raiders
Ravens vs Chiefs

Flash

Crash
Jets at Texans
Rams at Seattle
Bills at New England

We don’t do sleeper D’s, lets get serious. And to us, a kicker is a kicker is a kicker!

Good luck in week 1 everyone, football is back!
