UFC Fighter Frank Mir Gets It

March 04, 2010 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Frank MirThe MMA world has been buzzing for a week following comments made by UFC fighter Frank Mir. Mir’s comments specifically about wishing death upon current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar have set off a fire storm. The UFC and MMA community responded with outrage and some in disappointment with Mir’s tone. However at the end of the day Frank Mir proves once again why he drew the biggest buyrate in UFC history and is one of the few that truly gets the show.

Think about it for a minute. The same company that rewards fighters based on the best knockout of the night is outraged by something a fighter says to hype a fight. The same company that will fire a fighter with who fights an artful yet not dazzling fight, as opposed to a losing fighter who swings for the fences is outraged by something a fighter says? Does anyone not grasp what happens to someone who does get knocked out? Yes, the hypocrisy here shown by the UFC and critical fans is beyond laughable at this point.

It all started when Frank Mir was asked about Brock Lesnar during a radio interview with WXDX radio. Mir in a never ending quest to break two million buys for a trilogy with Lesnar said, “I want to fight Brock Lesnar. I hate who he is as a person. I want to break his neck in the ring. I want him to be the first person that dies to Octagon-related injuries.” Those are pretty some strong words indeed, maybe the most intense ever uttered by a UFC fighter. UFC president Dana White did not appreciate Mir’s WWE approach to his potential grudge match with Lesnar.

Dana White said, “Mir was “a [expletive] idiot” and that he “never heard something so unprofessional and idiotic in his life.” Was Dana talking about Mir’s interview or Dana White’s rants on female MMA writer Loretta Hunt? C’mon Dana, between you and me this is the greatest hype the UFC has ever seen right?

Finally someone who knows something about selling fights and drawing big buy rates weighed in on this controversy. You know this story has taken a turn for the worse when it takes a WWE Hall of Fame pro wrestler to settle the situation down. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin wrote on his Twitter page, “Frank Mir got a little carried away on his promo. but i love watching the guy fight. he a and brock lesnar are the hatfields and mccoys of the ufc.” Somebody pop a cold one for old Stone Cold!

Frank Mir was finally forced to apologize for his comments. Mir said to SI.com, “No one’s been able to explain it to me yet. I thought we understood that what we say on camera is part of the entertainment aspect of our sport and we kind of get a little artistic license. It’s not like I said this to my neighbor, that if his dog shows up in my yard one more time I’m going to kill him. That would be bad. That’s a problem. I didn’t understand it, but hey, it came my way, I said it, and I can’t cry about it now. I’ve just got to deal with it, I guess.” Amen!

I couldn’t have said this any better myself. Some bloggers have even asked that Mir be arrested for threatening Lesnar’s life. Seriously? This is where I find the outrage here from the UFC, MMA fans, and writers to be a complete joke. I could see a situation where you have Mir threatening a security guard or following in the footsteps of his boss and ranting like a lunatic about a female reporter. But here is a guy that makes his living off of  selling fights. These guys aren’t fighting in a high school gym or at the Olympics. This is a sport that sells fights and entertains just like boxing and at times like pro wrestling. There is a reason that Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock broke records. There is a reason that Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II broke records. Nobody thought that these were going to be two great fights. People watched or bought these fights because of the hype thanks to all of the fighters involved.

Personally, I think that all MMA fighters should take a lesson from Frank Mir in how to sell a fight. Muhammad Ali is one of the most revered athletes in all of sports history for his talents and his abilities to hype fights. Hey, at least Frank Mir didn’t use an racial slurs right? I think the biggest area for improvement in the UFC and MMA in particular is getting their fighters to understand that part of their job is to sell their fights on interviews. Some of these guys not only miss that point, but there are times when you have guys wasting their interview time talking about fights that MMA fans will never see. I love a great MMA bout, but I also love a well hyped fight. Getting the best of both worlds will only benefit everyone in the end. Frank Mir has probably done more to help his sport last week than anyone else.

It’s not what they’re saying about the UFC and Frank Mir, but as long as they are both being talked about than Mir is doing the best job in MMA.

Brock Lesnar Is Healthy And Will Fight

January 20, 2010 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Brock LesnarThe Brock Lesnar mystery is closer to being solved today. Lesnar and UFC president Dana White appeared this afternoon on ESPN SportsCenter. Lesnar claimed that he is cured of diverticulitis and will fight again. Dana White confirmed that Lesnar is still the UFC heavyweight champion and named four potential opponents for Lesnar’s return. The return to the UFC of Brock Lesnar is looking better today than it has in recent months.

Lesnar told his story and it truly is a remarkable story. Lesnar confirmed a lot of what had been reported in recent months. Lesnar said that doctors originally wanted to remove his colon which would have ended his MMA career. He said he received two other opinions and was able to get a reprieve on the surgery at the “eighth hour.” Lesnar went back into training and tried rehabbing the illness and injury on his own. In what Lesnar and White described as a miracle, Lesnar received a clean bill of health at a January 5 checkup. Lesnar credited the miracle to the power of positive thinking, prayer, and training. Lesnar also says that new tests done yesterday confirm that he is clean of diverticulitis and he can go back to fighting.

This is truly a remarkable story. Who am I to judge, but it just sounds remarkable that the illness could just disappear on its own without any surgery. I’ll take him at his word and the opinions of the doctors on the news. Lesnar said that he lost 30 pounds when he was originally diagnosed with the illness. He said he has since put most of that back on due to heavy gym training. He looked pretty good from what I could see as he sat there for the live interview.

Dana White clarified that Lesnar is still the UFC heavyweight champion and barring a medical setback, will remain the champion. White also confirmed that Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 111 will still be for the interim UFC heavyweight title. White said that the winner would be Lesnar’s next opponent. White also revealed a backup plan which includes two other heavyweight contenders. White stated that if the winner of Mir-Carwin comes out of the fight seriously injured and unable to meet Lesnar within a reasonable timetable that the winner of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 would then jump in and take the fight.

There are a few things to note out of all of this. For one, nobody on the interview confirmed any kind of return date for Lesnar. One would assume June or July given the three-month timetable from UFC 111 but it is just that, an assumption. Also, hypothetically the winner of Mir-Carwin is hurt, is it fair to take them out of the fight when the UFC has waited for a year for Lesnar to fight again? Not too mention, what is the point of an interim title if the champion is fine?

The irony here is that while the UFC lost arguably its biggest draw, they may have gained the fight of the century. I don’t think there is any bigger fight that the UFC could make right now than Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir III. Considering that they sold over 1.6 million pay per views with their last match, I would imagine that their next match could come close to the 2 million mark. Brock Lesnar started promoting the trilogy five seconds after the fight when he got in Mir’s face. Mir has done nothing but talk up a rematch with Lesnar, including taking personal shots at Brock over the last several months. As long as Mir can do what he needs to do and beat Shane Carwin, the wait on Lesnar could turn into the biggest grossing fight in MMA history.

Frank Mir Gets An Early Holiday Gift

December 16, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Frank MirSome of us still have to wait another week to open our holiday gifts. UFC fighter Frank Mir got his gift a week early. The former UFC heavyweight champion has agreed to fight for the interim title at UFC 111. Mir will meet Shane Carwin in a match to determine the UFC heavyweight interim champion in Newark, NJ this March.

I don’t have a doubt in my mind that Mir’s impressive fight at UFC 107 against Cheick Kongo motivated Dana White’s decision to make the interim title fight. Not only was Mir’s 72 second win over Kongo impressive, his interviews before and after the fight put him right back in the limelight. Dana White is anything but a dummy and moved fast to capitalize on Mir’s relevance. This will be Mir’s first crack at the title since losing the belt to Brock Lesnar back in July at UFC 100.

I give Shane Carwin a ton of credit for his patience over the last few months. He went from training to fight Brock Lesnar in September to the fight being delayed, to his own surgery, and now to having a brand new opponent. I also give Dana White a ton of credit for keeping Carwin in the title mix after promising him the match. Carwin’s ranking as a number one contender in the heavyweight division is very dubious. Many skeptics feel that Carwin got the fight for reasons other than his record. While Carwin is undefeated, he doesn’t have the big win that generally gets someone a title match in the UFC.

The fight will be added to UFC 111 and will be billed as a co-main event to headline alongside of Georges St. Pierre defending his UFC welterweight title against Dan Hardy. Ironically, GSP and Frank Mir co-main event once again after co-headlining the most successful UFC show in history, UFC 100. Thiago Alves is also slated to return on the show. Looking at the UFC schedule over the next several months, it is possible that the UFC could jack this show up with a Rampage Evans-Rashad Evans grudge match to take advantage of the close proximity to the New York market.

The big news here is that the UFC has finally moved on from Brock Lesnar after months of speculation. Dana White said over the weekend that he would give Lesnar up to six weeks to get healthy before he moved to an interim title fight. Lesnar’s camp has recently stated that Brock was doing well. White must not have been convinced otherwise he would have never made this fight. White has been extremely patient with Lesnar who hasn’t fought since July. This will only add further fuel to the speculation that Brock Lesnar is done fighting. It will be very interesting to see what kind of response comes from the Brock Lesnar camp.

All in all I think this has the potential to be a great fight. These are two of the most explosive fighters in all of MMA. Carwin has never been past the first round, while Mir has only fought once past the second round. Carwin is about as much of a Brock Lesnar clone as Frank Mir will ever fight in MMA. Should Lesnar comeback at some point in 2010, a fight against the winner would do tremendous business no matter who wins this fight. In the meantime, both Carwin and Mir are big talkers and the pre-fight hype should be a lot of fun. Get ready for some early fireworks, lots of hype, and a whole lot of tension leading up to UFC 111.

Big UFC Matches Ahead For BJ Penn and Frank Mir

December 14, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Frank MirThe UFC rebounded after several disappointing shows with a great closeout to 2009. UFC 107 lived up the hype with decisive finishes, great fights, lots of blood, and dominant performances. BJ Penn and Frank Mir both looked tremendous in their wins at UFC 107. Unlike recent UFC shows, there were no questionable decisions…just questionable futures.

BJ Penn continued to look better and better as he put on a clinic against Diego Sanchez. I thought the fight would be closer, but BJ dominated the fight from the start to the finish. BJ almost finished the fight early in the first round after a vicious upper cut. Diego survived and kept coming for four more rounds. In the fifth round, BJ landed a great high kick to the Sanchez’s head which opened up a nasty cut. Penn opened the cut up more with punches until the fight was stopped due to the severity of the cut. Regardless, Sanchez would have lost as Penn dominated all five rounds.

Frank Mir talked a lot of trash on Cheick Kongo before the fight. I don’t know if there is anyone other than Tito Ortiz in the UFC that is better at selling a fight than Mir. Kongo felt disrespected going into the fight, refusing to do the traditional stand-off at the weigh in. Mir predicted he would put Kongo to sleep, and that he did. The new bulked up Mir landed a great left and followed up with a guillotine to put Kongo out cold in a little over one minute in Round 1. It was one of the most impressive performances in a high profile match I have seen in a long time in the UFC.

It is only right to start talking about the futures of both Penn and Mir following UFC 107. Let’s start with Penn. There is nobody left in the lightweight division that looks remotely exciting against Penn on paper. Tyson Griffin is a name thrown around a lot lately, but I don’t think anyone is excited about a Penn-Griffin match. Penn made Kenny Florian look like such a joke, that a rematch would be less appealing than their first bout.

BJ Penn has made it known that he wants a rematch with Georges St. Pierre. GSP won’t be fighting again until March. Penn will have to have at least one more fight before the GSP rematch becomes a reality. Until then, I don’t know who you match Penn up with to give the fans an exciting fight.

Frank Mir’s future is also a big question and it all comes down to Brock Lesnar. There are still conflicting reports as to Lesnar’s health. Lesnar’s camp says he is coming around, while Dana White said that he has seen no evidence to confirm that. White has stated said that if Lesnar is still in doubt after the next 30-45 days that the division would move on without him. Regardless, Lesnar already has a match scheduled with Shane Carwin if he comes back in the next few months. Should Lesnar not come back, Cain Velasquez and Carwin would fight for an interim title with the winner likely fighting against Lesnar. Either way, Frank Mir looks like the odd man out.

After Mir’s dominant performance over Kongo, I am starting to think that the UFC’s inability to sign Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar may have turned out to be a blessing in disguise. As huge as that fight would be, Mir vs. Lesnar III will shatter MMA records. These two already have the best rivalry in combat sports, and Mir’s decisive win only adds fuel to that fire. Mir has never stopped talking about Lesnar and has been marketing the trilogy since the UFC 100 post-show press conference. Ironically, Lesnar’s controversial post-fight confrontation with Mir may wind up producing the biggest gate in MMA history. My advice should Lesnar be ready to fight again is to make this fight Lesnar’s next fight.

I know that Dana has already promised Shane Carwin the fight, but Dana White has broken fight agreements in the past. Is it fair to Carwin? No, but he did something very similar to Dan Henderson after Vitor Belfort beat Rich Franklin. There are rumblings of a July UFC event at Comiskey Park in Boston, MA. Sit Mir until the fight, because this fight falls apart the second Mir loses. Make Carwin vs. Velasquez and give them the winner of the Mir-Lesnar fight. There is too much money on the table to risk doing anything else but making Mi vs. Lesnar each other’s next fight. Like Mir, the fight would mean a hell of a lot less if Lesnar loses his next fight. Mir-Lesnar III won’t reach Pacquiao-Mayweather numbers, but they will be a lot more respectable than anything else on the UFC horizon.

Either way, the UFC has two huge money matches on the table for 2010. Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn and Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar in addition to Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort, Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans, and Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua II puts the UFC in a great position to turn around their recent slump of disappointing events. Unfortunately when it comes to the MMA game, these fights could slip through their hands as soon as they get them if Mir, Penn, Lesnar, or St. Pierre are upset before the matches are made. It would take a lot of luck to keep these guys undefeated throughout the year before making these matches. You already get the feeling that by the end of UFC 107 that UFC 2010 is a volcano ready to explode.

UFC 107 Preview and Predictions

December 11, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

UFC 107 BJ Penn vs. Diego SanchezUFC closes out 2009 this weekend with its first title match since UFC 104.  BJ Penn becomes the last champion to defend a title in 2009 in the main-event against Diego Sanchez.

BJ Penn is doing something that no other champion has done in awhile, defend his title twice in a few months. Penn fights the winner of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter Diego Sanchez in a much anticipated main-event. Penn and Sanchez are two of the most explosive fighters in all of MMA. Both men have 11 knockouts between them, and are two of the best strikers in the UFC. This is one of the first UFC main-events in a long time that has the potential to live up to expectations.

Penn is looking to erase memories of his first match in 2009 against Georges St. Pierre with two strong finishes to close the year. Penn is 3-0 as champion, winning two fights with a rear naked choke and won on a TKO due to strikes. Penn was once labeled as a lazy fighter who didn’t take his training seriously. That has changed, and BJ Penn has turned into a conditioning machine as proven by outlasting Kenny Florian in his last fight with a submission in the fourth round. On top of that, Penn’s desire to jump right back into a title fight says a lot about his newfound dedication to MMA.

Sanchez has been one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC since entering The Ultimate Fighter. Rarely, do you see a boring Sanchez fight. Sanchez’s last fight against Clay Guida was arguably the Fight of the Year. Sanchez is not just some guy who won a reality television show. Sanchez 23-2 in MMA, suffering his only losses back-to-back in 2007. Since his last loss, Sanchez dropped to the lightweight division, improved his standup game, and has been on a roll ever since. Sanchez has been long overdue for a title shot.

Most UFC stars who have been asked have picked BJ Penn easily in the fight. While I do think he wins, I don’t think it is so easy. Sanchez has never been submitted or knocked out. Sanchez’s two losses have come via decision. His last 8 of 13 fights have gone the full three rounds, so conditioning shouldn’t be a big concern. While Sanchez has never fought five rounds, he is well known for his superior conditioning. Unlike a few of Penn’s previous opponents, Sanchez can also take a punch. Guida hit him hard in their last fight and was unable to put the Nightmare away. I just can’t believe that this is going to be a cake walk for BJ Penn.

In terms of skills, Penn has the advantage on the ground. His BJJ is far superior to Sanchez’s ground skills. Sanchez may be the better wrestler on the ground between the two. On their feet, I think it is fairly even. That said, Sanchez needs to turn this into a standup war in order to win this fight. Sanchez can get frustrated when neutralized on the ground like he did against Josh Koshcheck. Penn can dominate Sanchez on the ground if that is where the fight goes. Sanchez could catch Penn with a lucky shot if he keeps this on their feet, which is the only way he wins this fight. No way is Diego Sanchez grounding and pounding BJ Penn for five rounds.

Penn is a -200 favorite on sportsbetting.com as of this writing, with Sanchez getting +160 odds. I bet those odds separate even more by fight time. The funny thing is that if you listen to Penn in lengthy interviews, he is more obsessed with Georges St. Pierre than anyone in his division. Penn is much more interested in avenging his embarrassing loss in January than he is defending his title. Penn is eyeing a 2010 rematch with St. Pierre which will likely happen at some point next year. He could look past Diego and get caught in an upset. I just don’t see it. I think this one is an exciting fight, but in the end Sanchez just becomes another victim to BJ Penn.

In addition to the exciting main-event, UFC 107 probably has the most stacked lineup since UFC 102. Frank Mir returns to action for the first time since his loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 107. Mir will face Cheick Kongo in a heavyweight fight. Mir has described Kongo’s ground game as the “worst ground game in the heavyweight division.” As a BJJ expert, Mir should submit him easily on the ground. At the same time, Kongo has the standup to upset Frank Mir on their feet. Mir has bulked up since the Lesnar fight and put on a ton of muscle. He says he is quicker and in better shape, but that is something that could really come back to haunt him if this one goes to a third round. In the end, I think Mir pulls off a win here and starts barking for another match with Brock Lesnar.

Finally, Kenny Florian also returns to action for the first time since his loss to BJ Penn at UFC 101. Florian takes on one of the most popular stars in the UFC, Clay Guida. Taking into account some of the unappealing main-events that the UFC has put on lately, this one could easily be a headliner by today’s UFC standards. Dana White is dying to make Guida-Penn and Sanchez-Florian. The only way that happens is with a Guida win in this one. White would probably have the biggest smile on his face in years if both Guida and Sanchez win and he can rematch them in a title fight next year. Unfortunately, as exciting of a fighter as Guida is he has never beaten anyone as good as Florian. I see Florian taking a decision here and grinding this one out in a disappointing fight.

The complete UFC 107 card as scheduled is…
B.J. Penn vs. Diego Sanchez
Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo
Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce
Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida
Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve
Alan Belcher vs. Wilson Gouveia
Matt Wiman vs. Shane Nelson
Johny Hendricks vs. Ricardo Funch
Rousimar Palhares vs. Lucio Linhares
DaMarques Johnson vs. Edgar Garcia

The Full Mount – MMA News for the week ending 11/14/09

November 16, 2009 By: Brett Clendaniel Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Randy Couture Welcome to my weekly article for the Camel-Clutch Blog. This is The Full Mount; your one-stop-shop for big mixed-martial arts news, rumors, upcoming cards, results and predictions. MMA is a passion of mine and is something that I follow 24/7. Enjoy third edition “The Full Mount.”
Anyone stay awake during UFZzZzZz 105?

UFC 105 will make just as many headlines as the second consecutive card with a questionable decision in its main event as it will for being one of the worst cards that the UFC has ever put on. UFC is very lucky it was free for the simple reason that, had I paid for it, I would have felt relegated to watch it. Since it was free, I didn’t feel bad making multiple switches to Notre Dame get smacked around again or the Manny Pacquaio/Miguel Cotto undercard.

Not only did this card lack names, but it lacked substance. Every fight on the card went into the second round or further. I don’t have an issue with that. I enjoy a competitive match. I don’t, however, enjoy two grown men hugging against the cage for 15 minutes. In fact, this card was so bad that I don’t even feel like wasting the energy typing about how boring it was when I could be talking about other big MMA news from this week. Keep an eye out later in the week for my article here on the Camel Clutch Blog on why “The Natural” deserves all of the accolades that he has received during his bland MMA career. So, next topic…

Lesnar Shelved Indefinitely

First it was swine flu. Than it was mononucleosis. Now, whatever it is that is bugging Brock Lesnar is either unknown or just simply hasn’t come to the surface yet. Dana White made it known during the UFC 105 press conference that Lesnar has something serious and it will prevent him from fighting in the foreseeable future. White did not elaborate other than to say that Lesnar was currently hospitalized in North Dakota.

Here’s what we do know. After finding out that the newly rescheduled UFC 108 bout with Shane Carwin was cancelled due to Lesnar’s on-going illness, Lesnar took a trip to his home in Canada to rehab. While there, Brock collapsed. “He [expletive] dropped,” White explained about the situation. “He went down, and he had to go to the hospital. They ran every test on the planet on him, and they ended up finding out something else was wrong with him.”

“He doesn’t want to talk about it publically, but he’s in bad shape. He’s not well and he’s not going to be getting well anytime soon,” White stated of Lesnar at the press conference. “He has other problems too. He is not good. He is very, very sick and he’s going to be out for a while. I am worried about it. You know, I can’t really talk about it right now, but he’s in rough shape. He’s in really bad shape … and we’re going to have to do some stuff to take care of this guy. He is not well and he’s not getting any better.”

You can tell just by that quote that White is genuinely worried about Brock’s health. Dana knows what is wrong with Brock and clearly knows that it’s serious. Brock’s camp released a statement this morning downplaying the incident by saying that Brock’s issues are simply complications of his current illness and that they are not life or career threatening. Whatever the case, we wish Brock the best and hope for a speedy recovery.

UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship Bout in the Cards

Dana White has stated that the UFC is now looking at potential interim heavyweight title candidates now that Lesnar is out indefinitely. There seem to be four prime candidates to consider: Shane Carwin, Antonio Nogueira, Cain Velasquez, and Frank Mir. Let’s break down these four.

Shane Carwin: You would think that since Carwin is the number one contender for the belt that his inclusion would be a given. Well, unless the UFC wants to wait 4-6 months before having this interim title match, Carwin cannot be included. One he found out originally that the January 2, 2010 event was cancelled, he opted to have a minor knee surgery. Carwin is on the shelf until March at the earliest.

Antonio Nogueira: Big Nog and Cain were just named as the new main event for UFC 108 last week. On Friday, however, news came out that this matchup would now be cancelled as well due to Nog having a major staph infection. It is said to be severe and will require a stay in the hospital to treat. This means that Nog is also out until March or April at the earliest.

Cain Velasquez: After his absolute dismantling of “Big” Ben Rothwell in which he barely broke a sweat, Cain accepted the UFC 108 main event against Big Nog with the winner of that match facing the winner of Lesnar/Carwin. With both matches now cancelled, Cain is awaiting word on whether he will have a new opponent or have his match cancelled altogether. Whatever the case, UFC 108 has now been through 4 main events and all have been cancelled. It may be a smart career move to just not have anything to do with the UFC 108 main event at all. However, my guess is that he will be fighting at UFC 108 and it will be against…..

Frank Mir: Mir is currently scheduled for a UFC 107 match against Cheick Kongo. The logical move would be to take Mir out of this fight and move him into a match with Cain as the main event of UFC 108 for the interim heavyweight title. Both Mir and Cain are currently training and could be making that idea a reality. I would put my money on that fight happening at UFC 108.

There doesn’t seem to be any other heavyweights to consider. Junior Dos Santos isn’t ready yet and guys like Kongo and Gonzaga just don’t deserve the shot. The injury bug has decimated the UFC in every division from top to bottom.

Ochocinco at UFC Cien y Ocho?

No. Not a chance. And, as long as Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco is in the NFL, I can’t imagine any NFL team allowing him in the octagon. Even for charity. Earlier this week, Ochocinco contacted Dana White via Twitter to beg for a match to help a charity. His entire twitter message read:

“Dana this Ocho Cinco, I want to fight your #1 and #2 best fighters ASAP, exhibition to raise money for a charity of choice!!!!!! … matter of fact I want Anderson Spider Silva-please don’t ignore me or you’ll have to fight me yourself!!! Sincerely Esteban … Mr. White this a serious matter, we can help alot organizations with this fight, I have a good chance at winning against Silva.”

White responded, “If you are really serious @OGOchoCinco, contact me. We’ll put a fight together for charity…. I need a Jan 2nd fight. Ocho Cinco vs Anderson Spider Silva. PS – I’m too old to fight anyone.”

Ochocinco responded back with: “Awesome! I’m fighting Anderson Silva-I can’t wait to throw my child please combo with a kiss da baby leg kick,Silva can shut the front door! … oh I’m dead serious, this will be one that goes down in history, Ocho defeats Silva in surprising upset, it’s on!!!”

There are many reasons why Chad Ochocinco is my favorite professional athlete. The guy is talented and entertaining. I can only hope that he does some work in broadcasting when he’s done. If you don’t follow Chad on Twitter, you must do it now. The guy is extremely awesome to his fans. He communicates with them very often. He is one of the few guys on Twitter that is like that with his followers.

UFC 106 Predictions

I finished at 2-3 at last week’s UFC 105 event. We’ll chalk it up as just reading the card had me so bored that I began to daze out into space. I’ll rebound this week with UFC 106. The picks….

Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz
Prediction: Forrest Griffin via Decision

Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony Johnson
Prediction: Anthony Johnson via KO

Amir Sadollah vs. Phil Baroni
Prediction: Phil Baroni via TKO

Luiz Cane vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Prediction: Luiz Cane via Decision

Karo Parisyan vs. Dustin Hazelett
Prediction: Karo Parisyan via Decision
