Looking At Memorable Philadelphia Eagles Trades

March 02, 2010 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Terrell OwensMy love/hate relationship with my favorite NFL team goes back well over twenty years. I can vividly remember being a sad and frustrated little boy the night the Philadelphia Eagles lost the 1980 Super Bowl. Maybe it was the emotion, maybe it was the fun of the Super Bowl party, but for whatever reason I was hooked and as much as I tend to say otherwise  it at the end of every Philadelphia Eagles season, I have never looked back.

Due to my color of green blood and love for the birds, I was recently approached about penning several guest blogs on the Philadelphia Eagles. The first one is a topic that is near and dear to every Eagles fan’s heart…trades. I look back at the history of the Philadelphia Eagles franchise and break down ten memorable trades. Thanks to a lot of research and some great information from fellow CamelClutchBlog.com writer Brett Clendaniel, you can relive some of the highs and lows of being a Philadelphia Eagles fan over at phillyburbs.com.

I won’t give too much away, but I will say that once I gathered all of the information I was rather surprised at some of the things I came across. For starters, I was really surprised as to how many great trades that the Eagles have made over the last several decades. Particularly the seventies saw the Eagles take scrap heap from other teams and turn them into Pro Bowl and even Hall of Fame NFL players.

In giving the birds praise, I felt my blood pressure go up as I researched and wrote about several of the bungled Eagles trades. Most of those trades came on NFL Draft Day and a lot of it quite honestly is 20/20 hindsight. I have to tell you that I came real close to grabbing my left arm and calling an ambulance when writing about a draft day deal made by the Philadelphia Eagles just a few years ago. Even now I can feel my green blood coming to a boil.

So judge for yourself whether the Philadelphia Eagles have gotten the better end, or blown some of the biggest transactions in franchise history. Relive the good, the bad, and the real ugly now over at phillyburbs.com by clicking here. If you feel that I may have missed a big one whether good or bad, leave a comment here or there and let’s hash it out 700 level style!

McNabb Thinks Vick Deserves To Start – Shocking!

February 09, 2010 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Donovan McNabb & Michael VickIt was nice to see Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb keeping himself busy during Super Bowl week. McNabb took time away from talking about his own contractual status to talk about fellow Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick. Donovan McNabb said in an ESPN interview that he feels Michael Vick deserves a chance to be a starter. I cannot believe that McNabb would even dream of wanting Vick to play on another team next season. Shocking isn’t it?

The comments from McNabb are stunning in light of McNabb’s history in Philadelphia. McNabb has never been the kind of guy to speak up for his teammates when it came to trades or negotiations. McNabb has said many times over the last eleven years that he prefers not to get involved with other player’s issues with management. McNabb said nothing to back up Terrell Owens, Hank Fraley,  Brian Dawkins, or Brian Westbrook when they were trying to re-negotiate their deals to stay in Philly. Mike Vick on the other hand continues to make statements about leaving Philly to start elsewhere and McNabb has his back. Quite frankly, McNabb worked harder last week than Vick’s agent to get him out of town. A bit of irony wouldn’t you say?

First of all, what did any objective eye see while watching Michael Vick that makes you believe he deserves to be a starter? Can he be a starter? Sure, has anyone watched JaMarcus Russell, Mark Brunell, or Trent Edwards lately? Does he deserve to be a starter? Sure, if you think three gimmick touchdowns earn you the right to hold one of 32 of the most prestigious jobs in professional sports. Why not throw him in the Hall of Fame while we are at it?

Tensions have subsided a bit since the Eagles signed Vick and as an Eagles fan, I look back with an objective eye and I can honestly say that Vick was a waste of money, time, drama, and a roster spot. It was evident quickly that Michael Vick 2009 was not the same Michael Vick of 2004. How anyone expected this guy to walk back in the NFL after being away from the game for two years and not miss a beat still continues to astound me. The bottom line is that Vick was not ready for prime time or to even be a part-time for that matter.

Instead of keeping Vick and McNabb in the same package and confusing defenses, Andy Reid opted to rather sub Vick in for McNabb during the game, in the midst of drives. The only ones confused were the Eagles who continually blew time outs whenever Vick would stroll in or wind up moving backwards. It was as if Andy Reid was pulling a practical joke on his entire team. It wasn’t until the last quarter of the season until Reid started playing McNabb and Vick at the same time that defenses started to become confused, and the offense started moving forward. In my opinion, the whole idea of this gadget play offense with Vick was a complete and utter failure.

Did Vick had his moments in the 2009-2010 season? He did, three of them to be exact. The first came when Vick returned as a conquering hero to his former team in Atlanta, GA. The hero received a thunderous welcome echoed with loud boos which surprised Vick’s #1 groupie, Donovan McNabb. Vick answered with a couple touchdowns against his old team. Keep in mind that there were numerous starters missing from the Falcons, but hey the Eagles love redemption.

Then there was that touchdown thrown against the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. As a matter of a fact, it was the only touchdown thrown against the Cowboys in eight quarters of play. Hey, the pass was beautiful and it was surely a glimpse of what Vick used to be. However, this was a play set up throughout the entire season as Al Michaels pointed out on the broadcast. It was a nice touchdown, but that was about the only positive play that Vick contributed in those eight quarters. Does that sounds like a guy ready to start in the NFL?

I am not even going to get into the Ed Block Courage fiasco. I have written about it and quite honestly, there is nothing more that can be said that hasn’t already.

So here we are back to Donovan McNabb. McNabb is faced with doing something practically unheard of from a franchise quarterback, play his contract year. As it stands today, McNabb will be going into next season without any security. For someone as injury-prone as McNabb, that is dangerous. I think back to former Eagles linebacker Byron Evans who did the same thing, broke his leg, and never played again.

Compound this with the fact that the Eagles arguably have more depth at quarterback  than any other team in the NFL. While the jury is out on Kevin Kolb, he is regarded as a future starter by most NFL experts. Michael Vick, according to Donovan himself should be an NFL starter. Unlike most situations where the franchise quarterback is in the driver’s seat, the franchise actually has more leverage in these negotiations than usual. As much as the Eagles would probably like to keep McNabb around, they are going to have a set price, and have the luxury of saying goodbye to their QB if they can’t come to an agreement.

Now why would Donovan McNabb be so adamant, so proud, and so focused on telling ESPN and anyone else with a microphone that Michael Vick deserves to be a starter next season? Funny how he never used the word “here” when making these statements about Vick. Notice how he never said the same thing about Kevin Kolb, who deserves to be a starter next season a lot more than Vick does. Of course he doesn’t, because Kolb would be starting in Philadelphia. McNabb knows that out of the three, Vick won’t get the starting gig over Kolb and McNabb so all of the sudden he is now comfortable playing General Manager.

As a lifelong Eagles fan, I have had it with McNabb. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and a real phony when it comes to sticking up for his teammates. He won’t stick up for his offensive linemen, his safety, his running back, or his wide receivers when they complain about management and ask for new contracts so they can stay here and play. Yet another quarterback on the team starts making waves about wanting to be traded and McNabb is out there doing everything but showing off game film to promote his backup. The jig is up and even I as someone who defended him for ten years can see through this ruse.

Is The Cleveland Browns Future In The Eagles’ Hands?

January 21, 2010 By: Jeff Porrini Category: NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Philadelphia Eagles QuarterbacksAs I always say sports fans, be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. The rumor mill is swirling with scenarios in Cleveland, and alot of it is focused on what the Eagles have at QB. As you know, Former Eagles GM Tom Heckert is now holding that position with the Browns, and according to rumors he and new “Prez” Mike Holmgren are looking for a radical change.

So of course you think to yourself, “doesn’t Cleveland have two QB’s, and one of them being hometown favorite Brady Quinn?” Well yes the Browns have men in position, but the offense the last few years has been awful. Several rumors spilling over have the Browns looking at Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, and yes even Michael Vick. Now here is where the wishing makes me laugh: Show of hands, how many Eagles fans would be happy seeing a deal that would ship McNabb to Cleveland for Quinn or Anderson? How many “Green Bleeders” would be happy seeing Kevin Kolb shipped there for some 4th round draft pick? Be careful what you wish for!

It seems to me that Vick will not be in the Eagles plans for next year. Vick can draw something to the birds in return for a trade. Rumors have flown about the Rams and Browns looking into Vick, not so much as a savior, but as a player to put some butts in the seats. I would believe that if he shows a quality work ethic that he can draw a third round pick. Although it would seem unlikely that a team would give up anything this high for a guy who really didn’t show the ability to play full time. His legs aren’t quite what they used to be, and his arm has never been razor sharp.

Now for McNabb, his story is well known. He has just one year left on his contract, and many Philly fans have been calling for his head. Sure, and why not? Donovan McNabb is only the winningest QB in franchise history and is one of very few all time QBs to appear in five conference championship games. This past seasons playoff failure by the Eagles have many looking at McNabb and thinking it may be time for a change. They look and think of how the Packers were able to say good-bye to Brett Favre, and how the 49ers once said good-bye to Joe Montana. In my opinion McNabb is the most ideal choice to stay in Philly because he knows the system and its players. Perhaps a dedicated offensive line would help? The Andrews brothers spend more time in hospitals then nurses, Herremans is more worried about his over bloated social life and Winston Justice has never proven to be worthy of his high draft status.

Which brings us to Kolb. He had a good start against a poor Kansas City team, but outside of that has not really shown anything sparkling. If the Eagles could stand to part with any of these guys, my safest bet would be Kolb. However if Kolb is dealt to Cleveland, Quinn or Anderson would have to be included in the deal so you have steady back up plans for McNabb. I feel that with a better team, Quinn is leaps and bounds better then Kolb, so I’d pull off some kind of deal like this in a flash. Although, be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.

The upcoming NFL draft is not loaded with big time QB prospects. Many say about, “well look at Aaron Rodgers”, yes look at him all you want, he was actually projected as the best QB in his draft by many. The Packers just lucked out to have him fall where he did. Come back to earth and look at some recent second and third round draft choices. Drew Stanton, John Beck, Kolb, Trent Edwards, Pat White, Brian Brohm, etc. How many of these guys are making a dent in the NFL? At least if you get a deal done for Quinn you have a guy who has started regularly and knows a little something about being in an NFL game.

Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it Philly fans. Please don’t even begin to ask me how many Super Bowls McNabb has won. If that is the measuring stick then perhaps we should find Brad Johnson, or Trent Dilfer, or Doug Williams? Feel the trend? These guys won Super Bowls, but quite frankly could never be the face of a franchise. It is all not the fault of McNabb. You have an undersized defense and an average offensive line. Look into stuff like that first before you jump up and down in excitement about the thought of getting a 3rd round draft choice instead of your franchise QB.

One way or another it may be safe to assume that 1 of the 3 on the roster will be gone soon. Whether it be Vick, Kolb or McNabb, it will make an impact on this city and this team. Who comes in their place? One can only imagine, but one will also caution: Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

NFL 2009 Season Week 3 Preview and Predictions

September 25, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Peyton ManningThe NFL 2009 season is moving along as Week 3 is already upon us. It looks like a much different season as usual than the previous season. We are already seeing new powerhouses, new fantasy football studs, and some offenses are starting to come alive. It is now that you will truly begin to see who the contenders and pretenders are.

Either Mark Sanchez is the next coming of God in New York or someone has played a cruel joke on Jets fans. This kid is for real. I was convinced in the Titans game he was for real no matter what happened last week. He didn’t put up huge numbers, but once again he was money on third down. Give me a quarterback who can keep cool under that kind of pressure than a fantasy football hero who chokes in the big one or as I like to call it, a “Romo.”

When will people start to wake up and realize that Tony Romo is not an elite quarterback? This kid was anointed as a great quarterback the first time he started for the Dallas Cowboys. Sure, he will give you 300-plus against teams like Tampa Bay every September. However, he not only chokes in the post season but he chokes in the regular season. I don’t know what is so surprising about last week. Does anyone remember how his season ended last year in Philadelphia?

The Jets are once again in the spotlight this week. The Tennessee Titans come to New York/Jersey in what has to be the AFC Game of the Week. The Titans started last season 10-0 and were sure locks to get to the AFC title game. Oh how things can change in one season (just ask Dolphins fans.) The Titans are now 0-2 and are done if they lose to the Jets. The way the schedule breaks down, the Titans are playing for their season in Week 3 on Sunday.

The Jets gave the Titans their first loss season. The Titans are obviously struggling without Hayneworth and a new defensive coordinator. The irony of it all is that the offense is playing much better thus far than they did last year. The Jets are in a tough position here. The Jets just came off of their Super Bowl beating the Patriots last week at home. This could be a bit of a letdown game for the team. That and the Titans desperation are pushing me towards the direction of a Titans win.

Fun NFL Week 3 Camelclutchblog.com Fact- No 0-3 NFL team has ever gone to the Super Bowl. It has been 11 years since any 0-3 NFL team has even made the playoffs.

Speaking of trap games, I am scared to death as an Eagles fan of the Kansas City Chiefs game coming to town. The 0-2 Chiefs come to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the 1-1 Eagles. The Eagles were embarrassed last week by the Saints at home. I can’t remember a home loss that bad since Indy came to town a few years back and Peyton torched us for four quarters. Matt Cassel isn’t torching anyone, but there aren’t too many weapons left to carry the flame for the Eagles either.

In addition to all of the injuries leading up to the regular season, the Eagles are faced with missing Brian Westbrook, Donovan cNabb, and DeSean Jackson. Yes, only the three most important offensive components to the team may not play. Kevin Kolb is likely to get the start once again in place of McNabb. Oh but don’t worry Philly fans, we get Michael Vick and the Wild Cat!

I see disaster written all over this game for the Eagles. There are just too many new players on offense that are bound to make mistakes. As for Vick, did anyone watch that Jets pre season game? Maybe Vick gets back to form by the end of the season, but his legs and his arm just aren’t there. Unless he swallowed the Michael Vick 2004 pill in the last three weeks, I can’t see anything being different in just a few weeks.

A fun game to watch this weekend will likely be the Indianapolis Colts vs. Arizona Cardinals. Peyton showed up everyone including his little brother’s Sunday heroics with his performance on Monday night. It’s one thing for Drew Brees to throw up 5 touchdowns every week, but it is another to do it coming from behind. Manning just makes it look so easy, including opening up the game last Monday with an 11-second, 1-play scoring drive. Manning put on a show in Miami and is bound to do the same thing in Arizona.

Arizona is 1-1 and the Cards far from the offensive machine that they were last year. There are grumblings about Fitzgerald being upset with Warner, Boldin is always crying, and their running game is once again in doubt. Kurt Warner just doesn’t seem like himself this year. Warner admitted not being 100% going into the season. Obviously he is still hurting on Sundays. Warner’s dinks and dunks aren’t going to be enough to get it done against the Colts. The Colts showed their weakness against the run Monday, but the Cardinals don’t have a strong enough running game to take advantage of it.

An interesting game to keep an eye on is the rival game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals showed me a lot last week by coming back after that heart breaker in Denver. Opening up on the road is never easy in the NFL. Playing your first two games in Denver and Green Bay is damn near torture. The Bengals came away 1-1 and have a chance to take a big step on Sunday against the Steelers.

The Steelers are a really hard team to read. Their rushing defense will probably be the best in the NFL this season. Yet, they had a real hard time stopping Jay Cutler in the air last week. They are playing arguably the best quarterback they have played all season. The Steelers are also going to see a re-born Cedric Benson who tore it up for 141 last week. The Steelers may be without safety Tyrone Carter in addition to Troy Polamalu this Sunday. If the Bengals are for real, they will show it this Sunday in their home-opener.

It must be Christmas, because I get the Dallas Cowboys in prime time for a second week in a row. The only thing better than watching Tony Romo choke is having all eyes on the game with no other games being played. The Cowboys Carnival is open for business once again on Monday as the Carolina Panthers come to town. I don’t think there is anybody else playing this weekend that has more pressure on them than Tony Romo or Wade Phillips.

The Panthers lost last week, but bounced back from a terrible opener against the Eagles. Jake Delhomme put up some numbers last week with 300-plus on the Falcons. Yet once again for Panthers fans, Jake throws a crucial interception on fourth down. DeAngelo Williams seems to be running fine, but their quarterback is killing them. The Panthers defense also played a part in the loss last week. The Falcons were able to convert two critical fourth down plays on the Carolina defense. This game on Monday night is purely a toss up.

Fantasy Fix - Ride the hot hand and keep Matt Schaub in the game. I panicked last week and cost myself about 30 points by sitting him. All reports indicate he is either fully or close to over the ankle injury. The Texans have the Jacksonville Jaguars who have one of the worst passing defenses in the league.

You saw what Dallas Clark did to the Miami defense on Monday night. Antonio Gates gets the same defense this Sunday. I know

Gates has started out slow, but you can’t ask for a better matchup to get your star tight end back on track.

Greg Jennings is another guy bound to have a great day on Sunday. Jason Campbell had opportunities against the Rams and so will Aaron Rogers. I see a big day out of that Packers offense specifically Jennings, Don Driver, and Aaron Rogers.

Fantasy Sleeper - There are some great sleeper wide receivers out there on the waiver wire. I tend to believe that Mario Manningham is more than a one-week wonder. The Giants are just waiting for one of their receivers to step up. Eli has been looking for that one guy to lock in since Burress left. Until he blows a big play, I believe that Manningham is that guy. On top of that, you couldn’t ask for a better matchup than the Tampa Bay defense.

If you are a gambler, I like Pierre Garcon on the Colts this Sunday. Peyton has a great matchup with the Arizona defense. Arizona is a team on the verge of an implosion if you read the Arizona papers. Manning is bound to have a big game and Garcon is likely to see some looks this Sunday.

Finally, I am loving me some Ricky Williams off of the waiver wire. Ricky isn’t a starter, but if you have L.T. or another back on the shelf and are desperate, Ricky isn’t a bad pickup. After watching that game Monday night, it is obvious that Ricky will get his touches.

He even looked more explosive at times than Ronnie Brown. The Dolphins are a pure running team and Williams is bound to have some breakout games this season. Keep him around if you have a spot.

Hey, I may have had Schaub wrong last week but I was right on Larry Johnson, Trent Edwards, Jeremy Shockey, and Joe Flacco.

I broke even last week with an overall 8-8 week on my picks. I am 20-12 overall on the season straight-up. Now for the Week 3 Picks (Picks in BOLD) -

Washington Redskins at Detroit Lions
Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams

NFL 2009 Season Week 2 Preview and Predictions

September 18, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants Wow is it NFL Week 2 already? If you liked defensive football, you loved the first week in the NFL. The stories ranged from upsets, rookie sensations, veteran busts, tons of 4th quarter comebacks, to quarterback controversies. What the heck is left for NFL Week 2? Let’s break it down and get to work.

Disgruntled NFL fans and fantasy football players need to remain patient. Do not judge a team on its first week. The same goes for Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles fans. A great offensive performance in Week 1 may not mean much around Week 15. Teams can recover from 0-1 starts and still win the Super Bowl. However, an 0-3 team has never won the Super Bowl. Next week may be the week to start panicking.

Philadelphia Eagles fans will get their first look at Kevin Kolb’s first full NFL game. Kolb was the first player drafted three NFL drafts ago by the Eagles. He was taken with the intentions of replacing Donovan McNabb oh say around now. Kolb has only seen real action twice in the NFL regular season. Unfortunately for Philly fans, he has been far from spectacular in those outings. This week he starts against the almighty New Orleans Saints and the God of fantasy football Drew Brees.

I know the Eagles routed the Carolina Panthers, but I am still not a believer. Most of the points came off from the defense and special teams. McNabb had two touchdowns, but McNabb only really had one long touchdown drive. On top of that, I am sure the defense was tired after being on the hot field for lengthy amount of time. The Eagles got short fields most of the time and capitalized. Kevin Kolb was never able to take advantage of those opportunities.

Drew Brees on the other hand had a monster day. My worry as an Eagles fan is that the defense is over confident coming into Sunday’s game. I do believe the Saints are susceptible to the long ball, but Kolb is not the guy to take advantage of that. Tight Ends generally play well against the birds, and Shockey had two touchdowns last week. I predict an ugly scene in Philly and Jeff Garcia starting or playing at some point in Week 3.

The New York Jets and the New England Patriots has turned into one of the best rivalries in the NFL. The teams play one another this Sunday in a very critical division game. The Jets are flying high off of a dominating win over the Houston Texans. The Pats put on one of the greatest comebacks in MNF history against the Bills. Fans of both teams couldn’t ask for better momentum going into Sunday.

I love a Jets win here. For one thing, I am a Rex Ryan believer. He is going to attack all day long. The Jets shut down one of the best backs in the NFL last week in Steve Slaton. I can envision a Rex Ryan speech for the ages and one of the most hyped up Jets football teams you will ever see. Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller should have big days on Sunday for your fantasy fans.

The Pats are not the same Patriot team I expected to see coming into the season. The team was incredibly undisciplined on Monday night. Not only that, the penalties came on third down and extended a couple of drives that ended up in points for the Bills. A fumbled kickoff return and we may be looking at an 0-1 team. Count in the loss of Jerod Mayo and you have a Patriots team that is ripe for the pickings. I am loving some New York Jets magic on Sunday and a big upset in New York City (well New Jersey.)

The other big rivalry game opens up regular season play in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. The New York Giants travel to big D to take on the Cowboys. The Giants have a great opportunity to open up the season 2-0 in the division. Two division games back to back this early may be unfair, but the Giants have the luxury of two down early. This one will be a fun one and is the Sunday night game of the week.

The Cowboys rolled over Tampa Bay in Tampa last week. Roy E. Williams alleviated a lot of Cowboys fans with a score. Tony Romo did a great job of spreading the ball around. Even better, Romo played clutch ball scoring on an 80-yard bomb after Tampa Bay closed the scoring gap to a touchdown in the fourth quarter. In the east, New York handled Washington as they usually do at home and looked good all around in their effort.

I love the Giants in this position. Tony Romo is coming into this season with a ton of pressure. The Cowboys are opening up their stadium in the regular season and are expected to play lights out. The pressure is all on the Cowboys Sunday night. The Cowboys did play well last season at home against the Giants. However, there are things I saw in the Tampa Bay game that would scare me if I was a Dallas fan.

If you thought Cadillac Williams was dangerous, wait until the Cowboys get a double dose of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. Osi Umenyiora is back and looking better than ever. Personally, I wish the two of them would just play to a tie. The Giants shut down one of the best running backs in football last week. I see them forcing Romo to go to the air and winning the turnover game. I love the season split, Giants take it in Dallas and the Cowboys take one at Giants Stadium.

A few other interesting storylines highlight NFL Week 2. If Jay Cutler was terrible against the Packers defense, how do you expect him to play against the Steelers? Other than a fluke play, the Broncos looked inept on offense and should be an easy mark for a revamped Cleveland Browns. Peyton Manning had great numbers but struggled getting points. Miami has a chance at a big day on defense. Don’t blame L.T. for the Chargers offensive line getting pushed around. Hello Baltimore!

Fun NFL Week 2 Camelclutchblog.com Fact – Bill Belichick is 5-1 against NFL rookie quarterbacks.

Fantasy Fix - This may be a week where you sit your starting quarterback for a better option. I love Mark Sanchez, but not in his first start against the Jets. I have Matt Schaub as a starter in a couple of leagues, but no way am I starting him against the Titans if I have to. The great news is that there are plenty of options on the waiver wire with juicy matchups.

Trent Edwards is a tremendous option this week against Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay stinks and that team is in complete disarray. They gave up big yardage against Dallas. Green looked real sharp last week and I’d take a shot on him. Joe Flacco is also traveling to San Diego. A better quarterback would have shredded San Diego last week. Flacco is that guy. Either one is a great play this week in this fantasy junkie’s opinion.

Like fellow blogger Jeff Porrini, I am in love with Larry Johnson this week. Ladanian Tomlinson is hurt and may or may not go. Even at 100% I would sit him against Baltimore. LJ is playing Oakland this weekend. He has had big games against them in the past. Darren Sproles was able to find openings against Oakland. If LJ can’t get going against the Raiders, he is truly done.

Fantasy Sleeper – Jeremy Shockey is a great option this week. Shockey went very low in drafts this year after doing nothing last season. He put up two scores last week but it was against the Lions. The Eagles are terrible at defending the tight end. A team with a good quarterback and tight end will shred them every time. The Eagles will probably be more concerned with the deep ball than short dumps to Shockey. I’d roll the dice with Shockey against my team as much as it pains me to say. He has a great chance to dominate the middle of the field against the Eagles safeties and linebackers.

I would like to take a second and boast about my 12-4 record last week picking straight up. Thank you, thank you. Now for the Week 2 Picks (Picks in BOLD) -

Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons
Minnesota Vikings
at Detroit Lions
Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay Packers
Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans

Arizona Cardinals at Jacksonville Jaguars
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Buffalo Bills
Seattle Seahawks
at San Francisco 49ers
Pittsburgh Steelers at Chicago Bears

Indianapolis Colts at Miami Dolphins

Birds sign Garcia, Kolb Sees Writing on the Wall

Jeff Garcia Sports IllustratedOnce Donovan McNabb scored his touchdown yesterday in the Eagles 38-10 trouncing of the Carolina Panthers, I think that most of us felt as if the game was over. Seconds later as Donovan lay on the ground, screaming while grabbing his knees and back, I couldn’t help but think that our entire season might be over. That feeling was confirmed once our number-two quarterback, Kevin Kolb, came into the game and did absolutely with yet another opportunity.

After all these years of listening to Andy Reid cough and grunt through press conference after press conference, we have learned that Andy Reid is one tough code to crack. Andy has never and will never come right out and say anything. He is secretive and holds his cards tight in his hands. So, it wasn’t shocking to hear Andy play down Donovan’s injury while also talking up how much he likes Kolb.

“I have full confidence in him.” Reid stated. “I don’t worry about his accuracy or knowledge of the offense right now. It’s just a matter of getting caught up with the game speed of the regular season.”

Right. So, in other words, the guy that the Eagles spent a second round draft pick on a few years ago who has had two years to prepare for NFL action is still not used to the “game speed of the regular season.” I can understand that. I’ve seen how difficult young quarterbacks like Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and Mark Sanchez are finding the transition to NFL game speed. I mean, they’re struggling just as bad as Kolb is, of course.

Andy has continued to talk up Kolb for two years even though people are still searching for progress. On the field, Kolb has looked like a quarterback who shouldn’t be playing above the college level. Fans have been waiting for Andy Reid to just come out and admit his mistake in drafting a quarterback who ran a college offense that went five-wide every down. We’re all still wondering what Andy saw in Kolb when he drafted him as high as he did. We just want to hear Andy admit that the Kevin Kolb experiment is over.

Today, we may have gotten our wish. The Eagles re-signed Jeff Garcia whom handled our team very well in 2007 when McNabb went down due to injury. The signing of Garcia is significant for a few reasons. First, it shows that the Eagles are realistic in their thinking that Michael Vick is going to need some time before he can jump right in after a two-year layoff and play football at a high level. Second, it shows us that the Eagles are not certain that McNabb will only miss a game or two. Most importantly, however, is that it shows that the Eagles doubt the ability of Kevin Kolb.

Jeff Garcia is not a third or fourth quarterback. If the Eagles knew that Michael Vick was coming back in week 3, they could have signed pretty much anyone to be the emergency quarterback. Once McNabb gets back now, who exactly is the odd man out? Well, Donovan isn’t going anywhere. It’s safe to say that the Eagles would not have gone through the public backlash of obtaining Michael Vick just to release him midseason. So, it comes down to Garcia and Kolb. It’s very hard to imagine that the veteran Garcia would sign with a team for one to two weeks and be kicked to the curb once again.

Welcome back to the team Jeff Garcia. You did wonders for this team and the city loved you. Our city loves athletes who put their heart out on the field and play 150% every down. Now that you have re-signed with our team, we can now thank you for putting the Kevin Kolb era behind us. It’s been two years too long.
