Fantasy Football Week 13 Waiver Wire Pickups

December 01, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Chris Redman It is time to start playing the fantasy football waiver wire game. This is an interesting week to play the waiver and free agent wire in fantasy football. One major injury opens up a big door for players that need some help at quarterback. There aren’t any other quick running back fixes, but there are a few guys that can turn out to be sneaky sleepers down the stretch if you have an extra space or two on your bench. With that said, let’s check out some obvious and not so obvious fantasy football pickups from your waiver wire.

Chris Redman, Atlanta Falcons - I thought the days of being tortured by watching Chris Redman games were over. I’m wrong, and this is not your average Chris Redman. Redman will start this weekend for Matt Ryan who is out with turf toe. Redman is a tremendous waiver wire for this week if you are hurting at quarterback. As you saw Sunday, even a Chris Redman is going to put up points when he is surrounded by all of those offensive weapons. Ryan is week-to-week, yet it is very possible he shuts down for the rest of the season. The way the Falcons schedule breaks down, they have the chance to spoil a few teams. Teams are going to look past Redman, and get burnt for it. Grab him and start him Sunday if you need some quarterback relief.

Jerious Norwood, Atlanta Falcons - Yes, two Atlanta Falcons are available for the taking off of the waiver wire. Michael Turner re-injured himself Sunday and is questionable down the stretch. Norwood returned for the first time in weeks and had double-digits. There are conflicting reports as to whether Norwood or Jason Snelling will be the goal line running back. I am inclined to think that Norwood will be that guy down the stretch. Norwood got 10 points in one of my leagues off of just six-touches. I like him as a sneaky play down the stretch. Plus, the Falcons have one of the best ff running back schedules when it counts, the playoffs.

Lex Hilliard, Miami Dolphins - This is my stretch of the week her. Hilliard isn’t a guy you want to pick up if you need a quick fix. Hilliard is a guy you want to pick up if you have room on your bench to gamble with a player. I stashed (no pun intended) Ricky Williams on my bench all season and it turned out to be a great investment once Ronnie Brown got hurt. Something lost in all of the Ricky Williams love was a report that surfaced over the weekend. Williams was very sore going into Sunday’s game and with good reason. He started his first game all year and had more carries than he has had in years. The Dolphins are looking to give Ricky 25 touches a game. There is a big chance that at Ricky’s age, his body may not hold up that kind of action as the playoffs approach. There is a big possibility that Hilliard gets more action, and a slight possibility he starts a game or two.

Larry Johnson, Cincinnati Bengals - Oh Larry where were these numbers in the beginning of the season? Johnson started for the injured Cedric Benson over the weekend and had a monster game. Johnson had 22 carries on Sunday and racked up over 100 yards. Obviously he is worthless to you as a fantasy player if Cedric Benson stays healthy the rest of the way. However, there is a slight chance that the Bengals sit Benson in the later weeks if they wind up wrapping up home field by Week 15 or 16. Johnson got the majority of carries over Bernard Scott, so keep that in mind if you are looking for Benson insurance as well. I have a sneaky feeling that Johnson is going to get another start here before the end of the season.

Chris Chambers, Kansas City Chiefs – Sorry Dwayne Bowe owners, but your quarterback has a new best friend. Chambers is playing for his career right now. After being cut by the Chargers, Chambers looked like he was falling into that career underachiever hole. However, he has gotten new life with the Chiefs and Matt Cassel seems to have a man-crush on him. Even when Bowe comes back, I suspect that Chambers will be the unofficial #1 wide receiver here. He is averaging 80 yards in four games and has three touchdowns to boot. The Chiefs also have games against Buffalo and Cleveland coming up which are almost guaranteed fantasy points.

Inside The Wheelhouse – Top 5 NFL Stories from Week 9

November 11, 2009 By: Wheelhouse Radio Category: NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Larry Johnson 5. Kansas City Chiefs release Larry Johnson:

If someone told Larry Johnson three seasons ago that he would be released from his contract mid-season and be hated by the entire franchise he played his whole career with I’m sure he wouldn’t believe it. But the welcoming mat has worn out in Kansas City for this once beloved football star. Amazing that Larry Johnson and not Jim Zorn were released from their contract first. I would have put my money on Zorn.

Now the question being asked is where or even if Larry Johnson will play his football career next? This former college standout & first round pick has gone from Pro Bowler to unemployed. I believe Larry Johnson’s career in Football will continue on but not without many question marks about the longevity of his play in the NFL. Anyone who picks up Larry Johnson may at best get a 3rd down running back.

4. Dallas Cowboys take over NFC East:

Out of the Eagles, Giants and Cowboys I never would have thought the Cowboys would or could be leading the NFC East at any point in the 2nd half of the season. This team is filled with too many problems and a Quarterback who may not be exactly what the Cowboys are looking for (nice U2 reference eh?). It’s almost as if Jerry Jones wants a reason to fire Wade Phillips so he could welcome Mike Shanahan/Bill Cowher/Mike Holmgren with open arms and pockets filled with cash.

But for the time being the Cowboys are atop of the mountain of the NFC East division and may actually become the team to beat in that Division. Which if you asked me seven weeks ago, I would have never believed nor written. I still feel like we are a normal Cowboy media problem away from watching this team crumble. I wonder who Tony Romo’s girlfriend will be at the Thanksgiving day game?

3. Arizona Cardinals blow out the Chicago Bears:

“The Bears are who we thought they were…” Ah never words spoken so truly as the Arizona Cardinals destroyed the Chicago Bears. The once amazing Chicago Bears defense allowed a senior citizen Quarterback named Kurt Warner throw five touchdown passes on the day, two of which went to Larry Fitzgerald (thanks Kurt, needed a big game from Fitz in Fantasy). The win made the NFL take notice and reminds everyone that they ARE the DEFENDING NFC Champions.

The NFC West is the Cardinals to lose. There is no team that can compete with them, at least in 2009. Just like last season this team could win nine games and still win the Division, hell they might even be able to win eight games and still win the West. What this game showed to the NFL is not to take this Arizona team lightly.

2. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers win their first game of season:

It pains me to write this as a Green Bay Packers fan but what can you do. I was still on the euphoric high that is the New York Yankees win the World Championship in Baseball (and may still be) and this loss didn’t hurt as badly as it could have. The only thing that probably hurts more then this loss to the Bucs is the fact that they did it in those horrible creamsicle uniforms that made them the laughing stock of the NFL for decades.

Josh Freeman looked great in the game and has similar build as a Byron Leftwich. I’m not necessarily saying that is a good thing but if he can make this team into believers for the rest of this season then he should head into 2010 at least winning five or more games. Good win for the Bucs and makes their fan base remember that they play on Sunday.

1. Philip Rivers’ last drive gives the San Diego Chargers the win:

In what was the most exciting game to watch on Sunday the San Diego Chargers defeated the New York Giants 21-20 on a 4th quarter last minute drive. Philip Rivers defeated his old team (wait, don’t remember Rivers as a Giant?), while Eli Manning fell to his old team (remember now?) in a game that has now put these two franchises on different paths for the rest of this 2009 season. The Chargers are red hot while the Giants are ice cold.

The Chargers have the momentum and are starting to creep up behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West while the New York Giants go from going 5-0 to going 0-4 in the last four weeks. For those of you keeping track at home that means the Giants are 5-4 and are handing the NFC East over to the Eagles & Cowboys. The Chargers will continue to roll and may actually catch the Broncos in the AFC West just before the playoffs begin, as for the Giants they need this bye week BADLY. They need to come out of Week 11 looking like the Championship team they were back in ‘07.

Fantasy Football Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups

November 03, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Jamaal CharlesI am not a big believer of playing with the waiver wire too much in fantasy football. I think some people get a little crazy with it and are willing to drop better long term options in exchange for a one-week wonder. However, those of you on the cusp of the playoffs may need a bye week fill-in or some insurance as we near the fantasy football playoffs. Here are a few of the hot names to look out for this week on the fantasy football waiver wire and free agent list.

Jamaal Charles - The Ryan Moats hype may be the best thing this week for those of you that waited on Jamaal Charles. I picked up Charles last week as soon as Larry Johnson was sent home, knowing that he’d be available since he was on a bye week. Moats will probably be the first running back taken this week, which leaves you a great option deeper into the waiver or free agent wire. Charles will be the starting back in a committee, but what separates him from the rest of the backs is his ability to catch the ball.

Quite honestly, I would recommend Charles right now over Moats to Steve Slaton owners. For one thing, the situation in Houston is a mystery until we see how Sunday’s game against Indy plays out. Two, the Texans are on a bye next week and the Kansas City Chiefs are playing the Oakland Raiders who are horrendous against the run that week. While Larry Johnson is technically available for the Raiders game as of this writing, he has yet to face discipline from the league. Even if Johnson is available, I would play Charles because he is a better blocker and will get more opportunities down the stretch. Finally, Johnson is on an extremely short leash for the rest of the season which gives Charles much more upside than any other running back you’ll find on the wire. Grab Jamaal Charles and thank me later.

Malcom Floyd - The speedy wide receiver from the San Diego Chargers just got a big upgrade yesterday when the Chargers released Chris Chambers. I am a little more bullish on Floyd than some people I know. The reason I like Floyd is because of the Chargers passing offense. You saw what happened Sunday when an opposing team game plans for Vincent Jackson. Floyd will get his balls, and has quietly been a consistent producer for the Chargers. The Chargers play both the Titans and Chiefs down the stretch and both are terrible against the pass. Floyd isn’t someone I’d start every week, but he could be a nice bye week fill-in over the next couple of weeks. I’d grab him if you are low on receivers and stash him away for a rainy day.

Fred Davis - If you owned Owen Daniels, you are in trouble at the wrong time of the fantasy football season. Instead of plugging in Houston’s new tight end, I’d recommend grabbing Fred Davis from the Washington Redskins. For one thing, the Redskins have a favorable fantasy schedule for tight ends coming up. Davis is not a blocker and unlike Chris Cooley who may spend an entire game blocking, Davis will be primarily in there to catch. Cooley hasn’t been ruled out for the year, but I highly doubt he is coming back and if so you could probably grab him off of the waiver wire. Davis has the Atlanta Falcons this week and could potentially put up Daniels numbers against them and the Eagles in a few weeks as well. The Redskins also play the San Diego Chargers in Week 17 who are terrible against the tight end. Davis could be the difference in Week 17 if your league plays through the season.

Vince Young - My judgment may be clouded here by memories of the greatest Rose Bowl finish of all-time, but he isn’t a terrible pickup if you are in need of a quarterback. Those of you in a twelve-team league probably don’t have many options. Rather than look at the Titan’s opponents coming up in terms of teams favorable to quarterbacks, I am looking at their schedule in terms of running back points. The Titans have a pretty good schedule for a running/option quarterback like Young. Teams are going to be gaming more for Chris Johnson, which will leave Young open to do some real damage. I don’t know if I’d ever start him, but if you need some insurance coming up for the playoffs he may be your man.

Ryan Moats - I don’t like the pickup at all but I feel the need to talk about him because of all of the hype. I think people are looking at his numbers and not his opponent. There is a reason that the Buffalo Bills are the worst team in the NFL against the run. A speedy back like Moats should be putting up three touchdowns against them. Here is the bottom line on this and I have written extensively about it already. Moats is never going to start over Steve Slaton. Moats doesn’t have the receiving or blocking skills of Slaton. Moats wasn’t even the primary backup to Slaton up until this point. The bottom line here is whether Slaton is the “starter” or not, would you ever play Moats if Slaton was playing? You’d be crazy to do so, but at the same time if you really need a backup or want to screw with Slaton’s owner in your league than grab Moats.

Green Bay Packers Defense - I rarely waste time writing about defenses, but this is a team that I picked up myself to cover my bye week. The Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants both have bye weeks coming up and you probably drafted them high. While the Giants are working out, the Vikings are producing and you really need to cover yourself this weekend while they are on a bye week. The Packers have some great matchups coming up, including this weekend against Josh Freeman who is starting his first NFL game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At this point, I would probably drop the Giants for the Packers altogether. If there is one thing I can say about the Packers it is that they don’t have letdowns. The Packers treat bad teams like they should be treated and they play some pretty bad teams coming up. Due to the Vikings game last week, they are probably available on waivers. Grab them and ride the Pack if you are in need of some points from your defense.

Beat The Shark Wrap Up and NFL Week 7 – Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down

October 28, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Contests, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Beat The Shark Girls I have to say that it is a good thing I recruited pretty women for this contest, because I’m making it really ugly! Another loss this week for “The Shark” you say? Oh you betcha!

This past week “Beat The Shark” was treated to not only the beautiful Miss Jenn Davis, but Jenn in return served up some history by becoming the first contestant to go a perfect 4-0 on the day. Ahh how nice it must have been for her and all of you followers of the contest to watch the Colts, Chargers, Cowboys, and Saints rack up big victories! Meanwhile not too shabby here either, but only 2-1-1 as I had the Texans push, suffered a loss wth the Panthers and got my 2 wins from the Patriots and Packers. So with Jenns perfect performance the ladies are now 4-2 vs “The Shark” and 15-9 in games, while “The Shark” stumbles to 11-12-1 in games. Keep your eyes on all the pretty girls in the tri-state area, they will all be wearing “Beat The Shark” T-shirts soon! Oh by the way, as always don’t forget if you like Jenn and the other contestants you will get a chance to vote on your favorite at the end of the season for “Miss Beat The Shark”.

So with that behind me (far behind me), it’s time for the Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down portion of our wrap up. As always I go all out to praise some nice things and trash some real garbage that I saw in the past week in the NFL. So here we go.

Thumbs Up:

To Eagles WR DeSean Jackson
You have to admit that he is quickly becoming one of the most exciting young superstars in the game. On the big stage Monday night, Jackson ran a 68 yard reverse for a touchdown and later added a 64 yard reception as well. He is the only player in NFL history to have touchdonws of 60 or more yards in his teams first 3 games of the season. Analysts and announcers abroad are praising this kid every time he touches the ball, and he is becoming more mature every week. For years Andy Reid refused to trust young receivers in his offense, but it looks now as if the times are changing.

To Redskin Byron Westbrook
Football is a dangerous but yet highly competitive sport. However some times things are bigger then the game and we saw that on display this past Monday night. Eagles RB Brian Westbrook had taken a knee from ‘Skins MLB London Fletcher to the head and went down motionless to the ground. Without even a second thought, his brother Byron, a Redskin, came to his side and stayed until his brother showed movement and came too. Yes it is a game, and that’s just it, a game. The Westbrooks realized real life and it was fitting that the nation got to see such an act on a Monday night.

To the Steelers Defense
They say defense wins championships, and if that is the case, the Steelers may have as good a chance as anyone. When Troy Polamalu gets on that field it’s like a whole new club, and last week in their win against the Vikings, this squad came up huge to seal the win. 2 TDs were scored off of forced turnovers and they held one of the games most legendary QBs in Brett Favre, and perhaps the games best RB in Adrian Peterson to just 10 points. While the offense failed to do big things against a very good Vikings defense, the Steelers defense made sure to come in and save the day.

Thumbs Down:

To Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson
So looks like yet another apology is being issued, another team forced suspension, and a once was superstar player at the end of the line. It is always been said that Johnson is a bit of a cry-baby, kind of an angry guy and always has off-field issues but this is the clincher. Using “gay” slurs, really? Not only is it gay slurs, but using it towards his coach, and belittling his team. The Chiefs gave him a second chance after violations of conduct conditons last year, and I guess its now time for the 3 strikes and out rule. This guy is pretty much finished, how about he just goes away.

To The Miami Dolphins
Ok so this franchise will always be known with a perfect season, but when it was needed to defend against a possible undefeated challenger in the Saints this past week they totally crumbled. A 24-3 lead soon turned into a 12 point loss. At the end with just one second left and the game out of reach, head coach Tony Sporano asked rookie QB Chad Henne to “spike the ball?” I’m not getting it? Maybe the 6 1/2 point spread needed to be challenged huh coach? If this team would have just played a full 60 minutes then this act would not have been needed. Must have been some half-time speech?

Once again, the Redskins
Get it right people, it’s not who’s calling the plays, but who you have executing them. Sherm Lewis had to be asking himself “what am I doing here” during a dreadful 27-17 loss to the Eagles Monday night. Oh and how disgusted did Jim Zorn look? They brought in Lewis specifically because they thought Zorn couldn’t handle the play calling? Does management and ownership even watch these games? Can I have a job calling plays?

You know it was really nice and fun to see the people of England enjoy and welcome the NFL into town again this season. I couldn’t help but get a feeling of global pride in our football league when the crowd on hand was cheering the Buccaneers to go for it on a 4th and 1 play from around mid-field in the 2nd quarter. Commisioner Roger Goodell has mentioned the possibilitiy of more games or perhaps a franchise in England. I say why not, they seem more alive then the people in St. Louis did anyway. We here in the U.S. give very little time to soccer, but yet thehy take the time to learn and love our game. Just goes to show you about opening your mind to new things!

Please don’t forget to check out my fantasy football “Flash and Crash”, and a new contestant plays “Beat The Shark” this Friday.

NFL 2009 Season Week 2 Preview and Predictions

September 18, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants Wow is it NFL Week 2 already? If you liked defensive football, you loved the first week in the NFL. The stories ranged from upsets, rookie sensations, veteran busts, tons of 4th quarter comebacks, to quarterback controversies. What the heck is left for NFL Week 2? Let’s break it down and get to work.

Disgruntled NFL fans and fantasy football players need to remain patient. Do not judge a team on its first week. The same goes for Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles fans. A great offensive performance in Week 1 may not mean much around Week 15. Teams can recover from 0-1 starts and still win the Super Bowl. However, an 0-3 team has never won the Super Bowl. Next week may be the week to start panicking.

Philadelphia Eagles fans will get their first look at Kevin Kolb’s first full NFL game. Kolb was the first player drafted three NFL drafts ago by the Eagles. He was taken with the intentions of replacing Donovan McNabb oh say around now. Kolb has only seen real action twice in the NFL regular season. Unfortunately for Philly fans, he has been far from spectacular in those outings. This week he starts against the almighty New Orleans Saints and the God of fantasy football Drew Brees.

I know the Eagles routed the Carolina Panthers, but I am still not a believer. Most of the points came off from the defense and special teams. McNabb had two touchdowns, but McNabb only really had one long touchdown drive. On top of that, I am sure the defense was tired after being on the hot field for lengthy amount of time. The Eagles got short fields most of the time and capitalized. Kevin Kolb was never able to take advantage of those opportunities.

Drew Brees on the other hand had a monster day. My worry as an Eagles fan is that the defense is over confident coming into Sunday’s game. I do believe the Saints are susceptible to the long ball, but Kolb is not the guy to take advantage of that. Tight Ends generally play well against the birds, and Shockey had two touchdowns last week. I predict an ugly scene in Philly and Jeff Garcia starting or playing at some point in Week 3.

The New York Jets and the New England Patriots has turned into one of the best rivalries in the NFL. The teams play one another this Sunday in a very critical division game. The Jets are flying high off of a dominating win over the Houston Texans. The Pats put on one of the greatest comebacks in MNF history against the Bills. Fans of both teams couldn’t ask for better momentum going into Sunday.

I love a Jets win here. For one thing, I am a Rex Ryan believer. He is going to attack all day long. The Jets shut down one of the best backs in the NFL last week in Steve Slaton. I can envision a Rex Ryan speech for the ages and one of the most hyped up Jets football teams you will ever see. Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller should have big days on Sunday for your fantasy fans.

The Pats are not the same Patriot team I expected to see coming into the season. The team was incredibly undisciplined on Monday night. Not only that, the penalties came on third down and extended a couple of drives that ended up in points for the Bills. A fumbled kickoff return and we may be looking at an 0-1 team. Count in the loss of Jerod Mayo and you have a Patriots team that is ripe for the pickings. I am loving some New York Jets magic on Sunday and a big upset in New York City (well New Jersey.)

The other big rivalry game opens up regular season play in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. The New York Giants travel to big D to take on the Cowboys. The Giants have a great opportunity to open up the season 2-0 in the division. Two division games back to back this early may be unfair, but the Giants have the luxury of two down early. This one will be a fun one and is the Sunday night game of the week.

The Cowboys rolled over Tampa Bay in Tampa last week. Roy E. Williams alleviated a lot of Cowboys fans with a score. Tony Romo did a great job of spreading the ball around. Even better, Romo played clutch ball scoring on an 80-yard bomb after Tampa Bay closed the scoring gap to a touchdown in the fourth quarter. In the east, New York handled Washington as they usually do at home and looked good all around in their effort.

I love the Giants in this position. Tony Romo is coming into this season with a ton of pressure. The Cowboys are opening up their stadium in the regular season and are expected to play lights out. The pressure is all on the Cowboys Sunday night. The Cowboys did play well last season at home against the Giants. However, there are things I saw in the Tampa Bay game that would scare me if I was a Dallas fan.

If you thought Cadillac Williams was dangerous, wait until the Cowboys get a double dose of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. Osi Umenyiora is back and looking better than ever. Personally, I wish the two of them would just play to a tie. The Giants shut down one of the best running backs in football last week. I see them forcing Romo to go to the air and winning the turnover game. I love the season split, Giants take it in Dallas and the Cowboys take one at Giants Stadium.

A few other interesting storylines highlight NFL Week 2. If Jay Cutler was terrible against the Packers defense, how do you expect him to play against the Steelers? Other than a fluke play, the Broncos looked inept on offense and should be an easy mark for a revamped Cleveland Browns. Peyton Manning had great numbers but struggled getting points. Miami has a chance at a big day on defense. Don’t blame L.T. for the Chargers offensive line getting pushed around. Hello Baltimore!

Fun NFL Week 2 Camelclutchblog.com Fact – Bill Belichick is 5-1 against NFL rookie quarterbacks.

Fantasy Fix - This may be a week where you sit your starting quarterback for a better option. I love Mark Sanchez, but not in his first start against the Jets. I have Matt Schaub as a starter in a couple of leagues, but no way am I starting him against the Titans if I have to. The great news is that there are plenty of options on the waiver wire with juicy matchups.

Trent Edwards is a tremendous option this week against Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay stinks and that team is in complete disarray. They gave up big yardage against Dallas. Green looked real sharp last week and I’d take a shot on him. Joe Flacco is also traveling to San Diego. A better quarterback would have shredded San Diego last week. Flacco is that guy. Either one is a great play this week in this fantasy junkie’s opinion.

Like fellow blogger Jeff Porrini, I am in love with Larry Johnson this week. Ladanian Tomlinson is hurt and may or may not go. Even at 100% I would sit him against Baltimore. LJ is playing Oakland this weekend. He has had big games against them in the past. Darren Sproles was able to find openings against Oakland. If LJ can’t get going against the Raiders, he is truly done.

Fantasy Sleeper – Jeremy Shockey is a great option this week. Shockey went very low in drafts this year after doing nothing last season. He put up two scores last week but it was against the Lions. The Eagles are terrible at defending the tight end. A team with a good quarterback and tight end will shred them every time. The Eagles will probably be more concerned with the deep ball than short dumps to Shockey. I’d roll the dice with Shockey against my team as much as it pains me to say. He has a great chance to dominate the middle of the field against the Eagles safeties and linebackers.

I would like to take a second and boast about my 12-4 record last week picking straight up. Thank you, thank you. Now for the Week 2 Picks (Picks in BOLD) -
