NFL 2009 Season Week 9 Preview and Picks

November 05, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Tony Romo vs. Philadelphia EaglesThe 2009 NFL season has finally reached the midway point. We are eight games into the season and only two lone unbeaten teams remain. The Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints look to be on path to a showdown in Miami. Last week featured a game bigger than the divisional showdown on paper. This week features another divisional showdown, not as big but just as important to the NFC East.

Last week, it was an NFC North rivalry that stole the show. This week’s marquee game features an NFC East rivalry. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys play the Sunday Night Game in a battle for NFC East supremacy. Both teams have showed glimpses of greatness and lapses in preparation, yet find themselves battling for first place. For the first time in many years, both teams come into Sunday’s game evenly matched in all facets of the game.

The Eagles shocked me last week with a New York Giants smack down (don’t sue me Vince.) The Eagles crushed the Giants 40-17 in a game that was even more lopsided than the score. Sunday’s game will be the third NFC East clash in a row for the birds. The Eagles will be in first place in the NFC East with a win and should be able to control their own playoff destiny.

The Cowboys looked like an 8-8 team in the first few weeks of the season. The Cowboys became an immediate laughing stock after losing a last-minute game in Week 2 to the New York Giants. The one-win Kansas City Chiefs even took the Dallas Cowboys to overtime. Something happened to change the team and his name is Miles Austin. Austin emerged in the Kansas City game and has given the stagnant Dallas Cowboys offense new life. Teams are now starting to shift their game preparation to Austin like they did with T.O., which is now opening up the Dallas running game. The Cowboys have won three straight after opening up the season with a 2-2 record.

The last time these two teams met, the Eagles demolished the Cowboys at home in the last game of the 2008 NFL season. Even more impressive for Philadelphia Eagles fans was that it was a must-win game for a playoff spot. After coming a few points away from the Super Bowl, the birds struggled early this season. The birds won, but had some big hiccups on the offense and defense. If not for the disappointment in Oakland, the Eagles would be at 6-1 and would be included in conversations about the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings. This is a very hard Philadelphia Eagles team to predict from week to week.

Another good sign for Eagles fans, is that the Eagles have always finished strong under Andy Reid. Reid’s problem over his tenure has been starting hot. The Eagles usually miss some great opportunities early and have to either back in to the playoffs or miss them entirely. This year, they have one mistake and lost a game they probably should have lost. The Eagles are in a great position right now and have a pretty easy schedule for the rest of the season. As long as Donovan McNabb, DeSean Jackson, Asante Samuel, and Brian Westbrook stay healthy (big if), this team is almost surely a lock for the playoffs.

Tony Romo has always struggled against the birds. I think Andy Reid does a much better job of getting his team up for these games than old Wade does. The Eagles genuinely seem to come out with more emotion for these NFC East grudge matches. Andy Reid has won 7 of the last 9 against the Cowboys going back to 2000. I just don’t think the Cowboys are coming into this game with the same emotions that the Eagles will have. I am picking the Eagles in a close, yet high scoring game.

The Baltimore Ravens travel to Cincinnati for a showdown with the Bengals. I predicted a Ravens win earlier this season and was mistaken. This is a huge game for both teams, but more so for the Ravens. The Ravens would be a playoff lock in any other division but the one they play in. They need to beat the Bengals and Steelers at least once to have a shot at the playoffs. So far, the Ravens are winless against both teams and lost earlier this season to the Bengals.

The Bengals are no longer surprising anyone. This team is for real. I love their defense. Their defense is smash-mouth and hits very hard. It is everything Bengals fans were hoping that Marvin Lewis would bring to the team. Carson Palmer has been getting more comfortable by the week with the offense. Palmer and the Bengals had their best game yet before the bye week with a drubbing of the Chicago Bears. Palmer has 13 touchdowns this season, although the Ravens held him to one in Week 5. Cedric Benson is playing on another level this season. Even more impressive was his 120 yard game against the Ravens in Week 5.

The Ravens showed me a lot last week coming off of the bye week and handed the Denver Broncos their first loss. Not only that, the Ravens beat the Broncos 30-7 in what you call a “statement game.” The Ravens are hungry and the veterans know that this team has a small window of opportunity. I think the Ravens come out playing this game like it is their Super Bowl. Joe Flacco needs to play better than he did earlier this season against the Bengals. The Bengals picked him off and sacked him twice. I think this one is another close one with the Ravens edging the Bengals in the fourth-quarter.

Finally, the other marquee division showdown this weekend comes in the AFC South. The Houston Texans will look to be the first to hand their rivals, the Indianapolis Colts their first loss. No matter what the records are, these are usually close games. However, the Colts will be facing the most talented Texans team that they have faced since the rivalry began. The Texans are 5-3 and will bring in arguably the only offense on the Colts schedule with the potential to match them point-for-point for four quarters.

First and foremost, Gary Kubiak needs to start Steve Slaton and give him a lot of touches. Slaton had two great games against the Colts last season. The Colts are susceptible to the run, yet nobody has been able to exploit it long enough (other than the Dolphins who would subsequently get torched for seven). Would you believe it if I told you that Matt Schaub has more passing yards and more touchdowns than Peyton Manning? Well he does, and Schaub leads the entire NFL in those stats. That also comes a week after he didn’t score one touchdown against the Buffalo Bills.

The Colts have a very tough schedule coming up and it starts here. Peyton Manning and the Colts really haven’t been tested this season. This will be the test that tells you where the Colts stand among the elite teams. Manning will get his points, but can the defense stop the Texans from putting up four touchdowns? This has the potential to be one of the most fun games to watch all season. I am predicting a Colts win in a very tight, high-scoring game. I do think the teams will split this season, but the Colts just seem to be playing at such a high level right now that even the 5-3 Texans won’t be able to stop them.

Quick Hits – Arizona and Chicago is a real peculiar game. The Cardinals have a tremendous rushing defense, so Jay Cutler is going to have to do it in the air. If Denver can’t beat Pittsburgh on Monday night, there will be a lot of people saying, “I told you so.” Eli Manning plays the team he didn’t want to play for against the quarterback traded for him in Phillip Rivers. No motivation there right Chargers? Miami will try and fool the Patriots two years in a row with the Wildcat. The 49ers are in the unenviable spot of facing a very hungry and revamped Tennessee Titans. Welcome to the NFL Josh Freeman, you only have to play a very upset Green Bay Packers. Will all of these close games catch up to the Saints against Carolina?

Fantasy Fix - Steve Slaton. I wrote a lengthy piece about why I am sticking with Slaton and this will be a great example why. I have given you three great unlikely plays over the last few weeks. I gave you Tony Scheffler against the Chargers, Roddy White against the Saints, and Ricky Williams against the Saints. Slaton isn’t on anyone’s radar but this guy’s this week. Slaton had two great games against the Colts last year. The Texans are the only team with a strong enough passing game to run against the Colts. It sounded like Kubiak was trying to teach Slaton a one-week lesson in interviews this week. Don’t worry about losing time to Ryan Moats. If anything, the Texans want to get Slaton more involved than normal to get his confidence back up. I love Steve Slaton this week.

Vince Young - No I am not jumping on the bandwagon here, this is a matchup recommendation only. The early reputation that the 49ers had for being a great defense is long gone. They are being shredded on the ground which opens up a lot of opportunities for a guy like Vince Young. The 49ers are going to be too busy trying to stop Chris Johnson which will open up the passing game for Vince Young. I like, not love Vince Young a lot this weekend.

Michael Crabtree - I drafted him and traded him because I had other needs. That move may come back to bite me at some point. Crabtree has quietly had two weeks better than any NFL analyst on television ever predicted. All of these ex-wide receivers that said Crabtree would struggle didn’t count on Crabtree’s talent. He had 6 catches for 81 yards last week against the Jags. The Titans have been shredded in the air this season (see the Patriots game). The Titans are the worst passing defense in the entire league! I look for Crabtree to get a lot of looks and possibly his first touchdown this season.

Green Bay Packers - I wrote about the Packers in my waiver wire blog earlier this week. Some of you drafted the Giants or Titans are probably struggling with your defense. The Packers were available in most of my leagues on waivers or free agency. Josh Freeman will start his first NFL game against the Packers this weekend. The Packers defense has feasted on bad teams this season. The Packers have double-digits against all of them and you are in good shape if you can get double digits from your defense. Grab them on a one week play if you need a defense.

Fred Davis - I also recommended him in my waiver wire pickups, and this week is a reason why. The Falcons are terrible against the tight end, although they did a pretty good job of keeping Jeremy Shockey out of the end zone. Davis isn’t a good blocker, so he will be used almost primarily to catch passes. This offense stinks, but they have a good matchup here. The Falcons are also the second worst passing defense in the NFL behind Tennessee. I look for a big day out of Davis and a sigh of relief for all of you Chris Cooley owners.

Ryan Grant - If there was ever a week to play Grant in November, it is this weekend. The Bucs are the 30th ranked defense against the run this season. They give up over 160 yards a game on the ground. I am a little dubious about Ahman Green eating into his carries, but not so much this Sunday. The Packers offense have rolled over bad teams this season and I’d expect a big lead going into the second half of the game. Look for Grant to get a lot of yards running out the clock in garbage time. I love him this week!

Inside The Wheelhouse – NFL Week 8 Picks and Predictions

October 29, 2009 By: Wheelhouse Radio Category: NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Brandon Marshall If you think you can fare better then me or the rest of The Wheelhouse Radio crew join us every Thursday Night during our live broadcast at www.blogtalkradio.com/thewheelhouse you will have the chance to win a “prize pack” (some of which will include stuff from our good friends at EA SPORTS!). All you have to do is beat our weekly NFL Pick Em’ guru…Copernicus! You beat him that week you get a prize pack from us! For more info visit our official website at http://wheelhouseradio.wordpress.com.

With that being said lets take a look at some of the key matchups in Week 8 of the NFL. I’ll start off with a great AFC matchup between the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens. The Broncos come into this game red hot after a bye week while the Ravens come into this game stumbling after dropping their last three games.

The Broncos are gaining more and more confidence every week and will continue to do so in this game as the heat is on in Baltimore. The Ravens need this win to continue to stay in contention for a potential wildcard spot at the end of the season. Joe Flacco is still a sophomore Quarterback and will feel the heat in this one. I look at the Broncos winning this game and improving to an unbelievable 7-0.

We then move to the AFC East with an important matchup between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are coming off of a heartbreaking loss to the New Orleans Saints while the Jets are coming off of a victory against the Oakland Raiders. The Jets are trying to avenge their loss from MNF a couple weeks back where they lost in a great game in Miami.

The Jets are at home and Mark Sanchez needs this victory to continue to improve this team’s confidence. The Jets are a potential playoff team and could continue to gain ground towards that eventual goal against a much underrated Dolphins team. While on the other side of the ball the Dolphins are looking to get back on track in New York, it’s going to be a tough battle after dropping a heartbreaking loss at home against the NFC’s best team last week. It should be a great game to watch in the NFL.

Speaking of teams that are in need of a win it will be the New York Football Giants taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. Funny that New York and Philly will be playing each other not only in Football but in Baseball too, in the same city, literally right across the street from one another. Both of these teams, especially the Eagles are hoping to ride the wave of the Baseball brethren in this important NFC East matchup.

The Giants have gone from a 5-0 team, favorites in the NFC, to a team that is slowly slipping in the power rankings of the NFL. Eli Manning is going to need to go into Philadelphia just like they did in Dallas in Week 2. This is a much needed victory for both teams because whoever wins this game will be atop the NFC East. Look for a comeback for the New York Football Giants in Week 8 as they head into a bye week.

Then onto the most heavily hyped football game of the season with the exception of the Super Bowl for the 2009 Football season. The Minnesota Vikings led by Brett Favre head into Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. This could be one of the highest rated Sunday afternoon games ever in NFL history. They set records when it was Monday night in Minnesota and it being in Green Bay could have even higher expectations for TV land. How this game isn’t on primetime or on a primetime network I will never know.

As for the game itself I look for Aaron Rodgers to put on a show for the hometown crowd. Brett Favre is going into an environment that he has never been in before where thousands of people that once looked at him as a hero will want his head. I’m sure you’re going to have the people that will cheer on Brett and they mostly should but you’re going to get more fans that are heartbroken that their hero, the guy who was going to be forever the face of the franchise basically gave everyone the finger. I have to go with the Packers defeating the Vikings in front of the Packers crowd.

Finally the last key matchup of the week is two of my favorite teams in the NFC. The New Orleans Saints take on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8. The Falcons was at the beginning of the season one of the teams I liked to actually represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. But the more they play week after week the more I see that they truly are a team that is continuing to learn with a 2nd year QB that is a year or two away from being a legit powerhouse in the NFL.

As for the Saints they are without a doubt the best team in the NFC at the halfway point. I will be shocked if the Saints do not make the Super Bowl come February. They are an all around sound team from offense to defense; there are no flaws at all with them right now. I see this trend continuing as the Saints stretch their NFC South lead even more with a victory over the Falcons in Week 8.

Now onto my Week 8 picks…

Week 8 Picks:

Broncos over Ravens
Texans over Bills
Bears over Browns
Cowboys over Seahawks
Jets over Dolphins
Colts over 49ers
Giants over Eagles
Lions over Rams
Chargers over Raiders
Titans over Jaguars
Packers over Vikings
Cardinals over Panthers
Saints over Falcons

Week 7 Record: 10-3
2009 Record: 66-36

NFL 2009 Season Week 8 Preview and Picks

October 29, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Brett Favre and Aaron RodgersThis is the week that has been circled on the calendars of many NFL fans since August. Sure, there are plenty of games this weekend, but one in particular will grab the spotlight. Brett Favre comes back to Lambeau Field in an NFL regular season game that may rival the World Series in Sunday ratings.

There were many questions about Brett Favre returning to the NFL and playing for the Minnesota Vikings. The number one question surrounded him was his health. Favre left the NFL last season injured and broken down. According to Favre, all of his injuries had not healed coming into the season. The showdown with the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field was a great story in August, but many fans wondered if Favre would make it to Week 8. Favre has not only made it, he has turned out to be one of the biggest success stories of the 2009 NFL season.

It seemed like yesterday that these two teams were playing on Monday Night Football. The game was a ratings bonanza and crushed its competition. The Minnesota Vikings also crushed their competition in the Green Bay Packers. The Vikings defense was in the Packers backfield more than Ryan Grant was on that Monday Night. Since that game, the Packers have looked to get back on track and are ready to prove to the world that Monday’s game was a one night stand.

The Vikings come into Lambeau at a very interesting time. The Vikings suffered their first loss of the season last week to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Vikings let the game get away from them due to turnovers and mistakes. Brett Favre picked up right where he left off last season and looked erratic and cost his team on a pick-six. Percy Harvin was a bright spot, but the Vikings definitely showed some problems covering the long ball. The Packers could either be getting the Vikings at a great time or a terrible time depending upon how the Vikes bounce back from the loss.

The Green Bay Packers are a very interesting team. At 4-2, the Packers desperately need this win this game to have any chance at winning the North. They have rolled over the teams they should have beaten, yet really struggled with mediocre-great teams. The Vikings are obviously a great team, maybe the most complete in the NFC. I don’t expect the crazy shootout like we saw on Monday Night Football. I expect a lower scoring, lots of Donald Lee for the Packers, and another tremendous effort out of the Vikings defense.

As for Aaron Rogers, he better play his butt off on Sunday. I wouldn’t want the pressure that this guy has on his shoulders for anything. Universally Rogers was praised for his MNF performance, but I disagreed with the analysts. Rogers held on to the ball at times for way too long and looked confused on occasion. I know he had a lot of yards, but that didn’t mean anything on the scoreboard. Rogers needs to do a better job of dumping off the ball before Jared Allen nails him and keep the Vikings honest with some deep balls. Anything less than a stellar effort from Rogers will have the cheese heads wanting his head on Monday morning.

Another great rivalry will steal some headlines this Sunday. The NFC East comes to the forefront as the Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants. The Giants are coming off of two very disappointing losses as the Eagles are coming off of a Monday night win against the Washington Redskins. While a loss won’t put anyone out of the playoff hunt, a win would put the winner in the NFC driver’s seat.

For the Eagles, they are playing the Giants at the right time. Injuries have decimated the usual stellar New York defense and turned them from a Super Bowl team to very ordinary team. Kurt Warner and Drew Brees sliced and diced the defense the last two weeks. For someone like Andy Reid who likes to pass, the Eagles could have a big day in the air. The Eagles could give the Giants nightmares if they attack Antonio Pierce via the Wildcat with LeShon McCoy, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, or Brian Westbrook. If the Eagles can get any of these guys matched up against Pierce, they are bound to get some big plays.

It is simple for the New York Giants. The Giants need to get a pass rush on Donovan McNabb. The Eagles offensive line did a much better job against the Redskins than they did in Oakland of protecting the quarterback. It is imperative that the Eagles run the ball to keep the Giants honest on defense. The Giants will rush guys all day if they aren’t threatened by the run. At the same time, this rush could bite the Giants bigtime if McNabb gets some guys open. McNabb could make them pay dearly if he gets enough time to hit Jeremy Maclin or DeSean Jackson with some long balls.

I know what the Giants are. The Giants are a team that will beat bad-good teams and struggle against elite teams with a passing game. I don’t know what the Eagles are yet. The Eagles have played both up and down to their competition. The Eagles have yet to beat a good team this season, although they can only play who is on their schedule. I think the Eagles have some real opportunities with or without Westbrook. I would love to predict an Eagles win but I just can’t envision the Giants losing three straight. Also, as an Eagles fan I am used to seeing this team choke whenever they have a chance to move ahead early or in mid-season. I predict a low scoring game, close at times, but a definitive Giants win with the birds getting one back in New Jersey.

The other rivalry game this weekend pits the Miami Dolphins against the New York Jets. It seems like it was just last week that the Ronnie Brown scored a last second touchdown and broke the hearts of Jets fans all over New York City. Quite honestly, Mark Sanchez hasn’t been the same since that game. This game features the two top rushing teams in the NFL and two very young quarterbacks who will try and do as little as possible to lose the game.

I got caught up early on in the Mark Sanchez hype. I bought into it and thought the Jets would be unstoppable. However, Sanchez has come back down to earth and has looked at times like a rookie quarterback who probably should have stayed an extra year in college. I never liked Chad Henne in college and I don’t see much improvement in his pro game. Henne went winless in the Ohio State University-Michigan series for the Wolverines proving to me that he isn’t a big game quarterback. This is a big game, so I certainly won’t count on him for the win.

These teams had very different weeks last week. The Jets devoured the “playoff bound” Oakland Raiders and never took their foot off of the pedal. The Dolphins came within a quarter of pulling off the biggest upset of the season. However, if you read my blog here last week you probably weren’t surprised when the Dolphins went out to an early lead as that was exactly what I predicted. Yet, I was surprised that they allowed the Saints to score over 20 fourth-quarter points and come from behind to win the game. It will be really interesting to see where the mentality is of both teams coming into Sunday’s game.

The Dolphins confused the Jets defense with the Wildcat earlier this season. Rex Ryan took a lot of heat from the New York media for being unprepared for the attack and playing a soft defense at the end of the game. There is no other team in the NFL that runs the Wildcat like the Dolphins and that is because of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. As a fantasy football player, I seriously have man crushes on these two for what they have accomplished for the last two seasons.  The Jets defense needs to play a much better game to win this thing. The Dolphins converted nine of 14 third-downs in their last meeting. The Jets defense can’t allow that. I think these teams are almost identical in a lot of ways with this being a very even matchup. Considering how even the teams are, I give the Jets a slight edge playing at home.

Quick Hits - The Ravens and Broncos will both be coming off a bye-week to play one another. The Ravens have lost some very close games, whereas the Broncos have won some very close games. Look for another tight one here between these two defensive units. Roddy White usually torches the New Orleans Saints. This year’s Saints defense may have an answer for the Falcon. If the Chicago Bears offense can’t get a jumpstart against the Cleveland Browns, than it may be time to start looking at a new coach. I am still not buying Buffalo’s turnaround. The Jags embarrassed the Titans earlier this season, yet I don’t expect another blowout. The number-one rated rushing defense will get their biggest test of the season this weekend thanks to DeAngelo Williams and Jonathon Stewart.

Fantasy Fix - Roddy White. Don’t be afraid to play Roddy White against the Saints defense. White had 164 yards in their previous meeting. He has put up no less than an average of 13 ff points in his last four games against the Saints. The Falcons aren’t going to beat the Saints on the ground. The Saints don’t give up many touchdowns in the air, yet they will give up yards. I love Roddy White this week and if you listened to me for the last two weeks you would have started Ricky Williams last week and Tony Scheffler the week before.

Jeremy Shockey. I hate to rave about a tight end so high, but I love his matchup. Shockeu could have a huge day this week so make sure you put him in your lineup. . The Atlanta Falcons are terrible against the tight end, and I expect a lot of scoring here. The Atlanta Falcons give up close to 60% more points to tight ends than the average NFL team. Play Shockey!

Donald Lee. I mentioned him earlier and I’ll mention him again. Chances are you may be able to grab Lee off waivers or free agency. The Minnesota Vikings give up more points to tight ends than anyone other than the Philadelphia Eagles this season. Jermichael Finley is out, thus Lee won’t be splitting time with anyone. In order for the Packers to win, Aaron Rodgers needs to dump off quick to his backs and tight end. Jermichael Finley had 128 yards and 1 touchdown in Week 4 against the Vikings. Plug Donald Lee in with confidence Sunday.

Mike Sims-Walker. Remember where you were the first time you heard his name? You heard his name in the Tennessee Titans game from Week 4. Sims-Walker burned the Titans for two touchdowns and 91 yards for a total of 20 ff points in one of my leagues. The once heralded Tennessee Titans defense has given up almost 90% more ff points to wide receivers as compared to the average numbers among teams. I don’t expect a lopsided blowout, but I do expect a high scoring game for the Jaguars. Plug him in and sit back and watch another double-digit game from the man with a double last name. The Titans also give up close to 80% more ff points to quarterbacks. David Garrard is available on waivers in most of my leagues. Grab him and start him!

T.J. Houshmanzadeh. Maybe it is wishful thinking since he is on one of my teams, but I really like him this week. It was a different team, but TJ scored two touchdowns and over 20 ff points last year against the Dallas Cowboys. The Seattle Seahawks are coming off a bye-week and a terrible loss. Matt Hasselbeck had a week of rest and the Seahawks are ready to go. I have a sneaky feeling that the Dallas Cowboys may get a little cute and look ahead to the Sunday night showdown with Philadelphia. Plug in TJ and let’s hope for another repeat performance against the Cowboys from the former Bengal.
