Fantasy Football Week 9 Studs and Duds

November 10, 2009 By: Michael Williams Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

This week was full of redemption from the previous week and continued dominance in the fantasy game. Also I believe that it will show the emergence of new fantasy studs for many weeks to come.

STUDS:
DeAngelo Williams:
Where was this in the first couple of games of the season? The Panthers are a running team and have a stud running back in Williams. He was 1 yard away from his third 150 yard game in the past 4 weeks. Add that to 5 TDs over that span and it looks like the first round pick many spent on DeAngelo is finally panning out. John Fox is trying not to lose his job so he will just keep giving Williams more and more carries so he can repeat this effort every week.

Chris Johnson: Whenever continued dominance is mentioned, Chris Johnson can’t be far behind. Looks like the Titans are following my advice and giving the ball to Johnson more than 25 times a game. This will usually equal in a great week for fantasy owner of Johnson because against the 49ers he rushed for 135 yards and 2 TDs and busted out another 40 yard run. The man is an absolute beast right now and don’t look for him to slow down anytime soon.

Michael Turner: As I said last week, Turner is running like a completely different back. He is back to his human bowling ball act like he was last year. His stats were 16 attempts for 166 yards and 2 TDs. I think the Falcons have noticed that he is back to his old form and are going to give him the ball much more than putting the game on Matt Ryan’s shoulders. I predict he should have similar numbers next week against the Panthers as well.

Kurt Warner: Well that was a quick turnaround. He goes from throwing 5 INTs to throwing 5 TDs the following week. It is true that the Bears Defense looked awful when Warner was in, but he looked like a true stud against them. The fact that they pulled him because they were up by so much, then put him back in, only to have him score another TD shows that he was truly dominant against the Bears.

Notables: Randy Moss, Steelers D, Greg Olsen, and Larry Fitzgerald

DUDS:
Joe Flacco:
The Bengals D yet again had Joe Flacco’s number. Flacco was missing throws all day and only completed 8 passes to his wide receivers. Put this on top of his less than 200 yards and 2 INTs and he looked like a rookie again. You have to give credit to the Bengals D as well, but Flacco looked like a deer in the headlights against the finally impressive Bengals D.

Eagles Passing Attack: Against the Cowboys, D-Nabb looked very average after playing against the Giants D and their go to wide receiver, DeSean Jackson, had only two receptions for 29 yards. When a team usually has more passing attempts than rushing attempts, like the Eagles do, they either live or die by the passing game and they died big time. As a person who stared McNabb and Jackson in my fantasy league and have them put up a combined 11 points I am completely disappointed. I don’t think that this will be a trend that will continue, but the Eagles passing game has been so good and so bad in certain games, it’s hard to tell which one will show up for the following week.

Kyle Orton: I was so happy to see Captain Neckbeard fail against the Steelers. I am a huge Bears fan and have never thought Orton was any good. Well look what happens when he plays a good defense in the Steelers; he completely falls apart. I understand that he isn’t supposed to be the stud quarterback of a team, but people were talking about him being a must start fantasy QB. But recently when he plays good defenses in the Ravens and Steelers, he has a combined 373 yards, 3 INTs, and 0 TDs in those two weeks. Have fun with the real Kyle Orton Denver.

Packers D: You just gave up 38 points to one of the worst teams in the league who had a rookie quarterback making his first start. This is after giving up 38 points to your most hated rival, the Vikings, at home. Packers D looked good for two weeks but they are going nowhere fast and something needs to be fixed.

Notables:
Reggie Wayne, Marques Colston, Giants D, Steve Slaton

Fantasy Football Week 8 Studs and Duds

November 03, 2009 By: Michael Williams Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Maurice Jones DrewWeek 8 was full of running back tearing up defenses while at the same time the quarterbacks that were predicted to have a solid game did nothing but underachieve.

STUDS:
Maurice Jones Drew:
For the second straight week, Mighty Mouse tops my list on the Studs category. He rushed for 177 yards against the struggling Titans defense but the most impressive stat is that he did this all on 8 carries. For those of you doing the math that’s just over 22 yards per carry. That stat can only be topped by his 80 yard and 79 yard touchdown runs. This was a huge game for Mighty Mouse and has solidified him as a top 2 fantasy running back.

Chris Johnson: On the other side of MJD was the freakishly fast Chris Johnson who ran for a franchise record 228 yards. And like his opponent, his touchdown runs were 52 yards and 89 yards. If the Titans don’t run the ball with Chris Johnson more than 25 times a game they can plan on losing because Vince Young and the passing game won’t get it done. Look for Johnson to start carrying your team, like you wanted him to do all year long.

Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre: Both of these quarterbacks carried their teams and it was great to watch an old fashioned shoot out. For those of you that didn’t watch the game, it was back and forth the entire time with Favre coming out on top. Favre had nearly 250 yards and 4 TDs in quite possibly the most hostile environment he will ever face. And Rodgers had nearly 290 yards and 3 TDs and was the Packers leading rusher with 52 yards. This game had everything s fan wanted and look for Rodgers to turn out more of these performances while I think Favre will hand the ball off more to stay fresh.

Michael Turner: Turner was an animal against the Saints rushing defense that don’t usually give up 150 yard rushers. Turner was spotting the holes and hitting them like a bowling ball going downhill. Matty Ice Ryan had another “OK” game, but the reason the Falcons were in the game was the play of Turner and the way to force manageable third downs. This was Turner’s best rushing effort and look for him to continue it against the Redskins and the Panthers in the next two weeks.
Other Notables: Reggie Wayne, Matt Forte, Tony Romo, and Bears D

DUDS:
Kurt Warner:
Good thing he was playing against the bad Panthers offense because this game could’ve gotten ugly. Delhomme had to be smiling that his opponent was the one to have 5 INTs and 1 fumble. Warner was playing like he did when he got cut by the New York Giants. Fantasy owners had to love this matchup against the struggling Panthers, but Warner did nothing but disappoint. The fact that Jake Delhomme outscored Warner in fantasy points is bad enough; but when Delhomme does it with only 7 completions, it’s terrible. Maybe he should’ve gone back to his grocery packing job for this weekend.

Kyle Orton: It’s not that Orton had a terrible game, but in terms of fantasy points he definitely did. He had 23 completions, which isn’t bad, but for a total of 152 yards. That’s about 6.6 yards per completion. Clearly this shows that Orton just checked down the ball and attempted to manage the game against the Ravens as opposed to taking it over. Ravens had an entire two weeks to prepare for Orton but the Ravens defense has been giving up solid quarterback outings to people like Favre and Palmer so Orton should’ve done much better than this.

Steve Slaton: Wow he was bad; so bad that he got pulled. I don’t know about anyone out there, but I started him this week and ended up with negative points because he fumbled yet again. Owners have to be disappointed because he was playing against the Bills rushing defense that gave up 126 yards and 3 TDs to Ryan Moats. Those should’ve been Slaton’s points if he could hold onto the ball. Coach Gary Kubiak said that Slaton will still be involved in the game plan and help out next week but owners have to be afraid to start him when he gets pulled out of a game like that.

Giants D: Good thing the Yankees won on Sunday because the Giants looked like they were a JV team playing against the Varsity squad. During the 3 game losing streak for the Giants, the defense has given up 112 points and look nothing like the team they were through the first 5 weeks of the year. I’m not sure it’s going to get any easier when San Diego comes to town with a high powered passing offense that has seemed to tear the Giants defense up in the past 3 losses. Fantasy owners should start looking for potential replacements for the Giants D with poor matchups following their Bye week with Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, and Philly.

Inside The Wheelhouse – Is Adrian Peterson Really The #1 Overall Fantasy Football Pick

August 28, 2009 By: Wheelhouse Radio Category: Fantasy Football, NFL / NCAA Football, Sports

Adrian PetersonAs we quickly approach Week 1 in the NFL season we are also beginning to end all of our Fantasy Football drafts for the season. If you’ve completed some drafts already then most of you have seen Minnesota Vikings runningback Adrian Peterson go #1…if you haven’t then Adrian Peterson probably went #2. For the 2nd straight season Adrian Peterson is the top guy in most Fantasy Football drafts.

It’s because Adrian Peterson is “money,” he is the most explosive running back in the NFL. But to me there is new competition in that running back position that could possible dethrone the current “king” of the fantasy football “mountain.” And he is in the backfield in Atlanta, in an offense that is going to breakout this year in the NFC. Ladies and gentlemen meet Michael Turner.

For years he was behind the former “top guy” in most Fantasy Football drafts, LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego before he came to Atlanta. Those three years in San Diego allowed Michael Turner to watch one of the best in the game improve his craft even more with L.T., don’t think Turner didn’t take a bit of advice from Tomlinson when he was in San Diego. Case in point the very first game Michael “the burner” Turner had in Atlanta. He rushed for 220 yards on 22 carries with 2 touchdowns against the Detroit Lions. Yes, it was against the Detroit Lions but he set a franchise record…in his first game!

This season won’t be any different for Michael Turner as he prepares himself and the Atlanta Falcons for a breakout season. With Matt Ryan as your Quarterback, Roddy White at Wide Reciever and veteran Tony Gonzalez lining up at Tight End; you have an entirely explosive offense with an incredible amount of weapons for the sophomore Ryan (who I believe is a Top 5 QB in most drafts). Michael Turner out of all those offensive weapons is the player that will get you the most points come game day.

Now what about A.P.? This guy ran for over 1700 yards while taking Minnesota to the NFC Central Championship!

The reason why I am leering on selecting A.P. is simply because of his history of injuries dating all the way back to his time with the Oklahoma Sooners. In his Junior season (his last season in college) he broke his collar bone in early October and wouldn’t make it back on the field until the Fiesta Bowl in 2007 against Boise State. His injury is what made teams not draft him in the 2007 Draft as prior to the 2006 season A.P. was a sure thing #1 overall in the NFL draft had he stayed healthy.

By breaking his collar bone and missing a good portion of his junior year he fell to #7 overall in Minnesota. Six other teams were not only foolish by not drafting A.P. but were also concerned with his potential injuries. Let’s not forget in that remarkable rookie season A.P. was shut down with ligament damage in his knee, while it only kept him out for a couple weeks it went back to his scouting report on being durable and an injury risk.

These same scouting reports you should keep on an eye as you draft or have already drafted this year. Yes Adrian Peterson is “money.” But if you’re concerned about injuries look at Michael Turner as your potential running back. The Atlanta Falcons are a favorite in the NFC this season.
