Drunk Chuck Liddell vs. The Paparazzi – Video

November 14, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, Videos

Chuck LiddellCheck out this video of Dancing with the Stars competitor and UFC fighter, Chuck Liddell having a confrontation with reporters. Chuck is extremely inebriated and is doing his best Leon Spinks impersonation as he gets into a confrontation with the paparazzi. It is hard to understand what led to the confrontation, but something set Chuck off. How ironic in one week both Chuck Liddell and Mike Tyson have scraps with the paparazzi?

In all seriousness, this is a very disturbing video. It won’t take more than one search to find several videos of a drunk Chuck Liddell on You Tube. As a matter of a fact, there are plenty of stories of Chuck being out partying the night before some of his biggest UFC fights. Plenty of UFC journalists have attributed the decline in Chuck Liddell more to his years of partying than to his years of physical abuse in MMA. While he may have given up one sport, it looks like he won’t be retiring from the nightlife anytime soon.

Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson TUF Preview and Prediction

September 30, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Entertainment, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

kimbosliceKimbo Slice makes his UFC debut tonight against Roy Nelson. A fight that is tailor made for a CBS Elite XC special will air on Spike TV as part of The Ultimate Fighter. Slice has turned into a heavy favorite among MMA fans who watch the show. Unfortunately he is fighting a mismatch so bad, that I would be surprised to see it go the distance.

Win or lose, Kimbo Slice has already paid huge dividends for UFC. Other than Chuck Liddell or Tito Ortiz competing on The Ultimate Fighter, there will never be another TUF fighter that draws a rating like Kimbo. Ratings have been through the roof this season, mostly due to the presence of Kimbo. It should be no surprise that Dana White has already gone on record and said regardless of the TUF outcome, Kimbo will get a UFC contract.

The Slice-Nelson fight was taped several weeks ago. There have been conflicting spoilers that indicate that Kimbo both wins and loses, so it really anyone’s guess. The preview shows Kimbo coming close to connecting on a big right hand. In the reality TV world, that probably means he doesn’t connect and this one is going to the ground.

Nelson may look like a fat truck driver, but he is no joke. Unlike many heavyweights, Nelson’s strength is his ground game. Nelson is a former IFL champion. Nelson has competed in Abu Dhabi and has a ton of experience on the ground. This is probably the last guy you want to fight if you are Kimbo Slice. Unfortunately for Kimbo fans, Slice is a goner if this thing goes to the ground.

We all know about Kimbo’s punching power. Kimbo became an MMA star after his You Tube videos of street fighting became a viral sensation. Slice gained a quick reputation as a knockout artist after several quick MMA wins. CBS/Viacom even bought into an MMA company and televised their fights all built around the promotion of Kimbo Slice. Unfortunately, building an MMA company around a guy who can’t fight will eventually catch up with you and it did. Kimbo got knocked out in his last fight and controversy regarding whether the fight was slightly manipulated in Kimbo’s favor ended the Elite/Viacom relationship.

If you want to make a case for Kimbo, look no further than Nelson’s fight with Andrei Arlovsky. The former UFC champion knocked out Nelson in the second round. I won’t say Nelson has a glass chin, but the fight did show he was susceptible to a good strike. This of course plays right into the hands of Kimbo Slice. This fight really comes down to whether Slice gets a great opening punch or not on Nelson. Slice will get his opportunity. If Slice doesn’t take advantage of this early, Nelson will ground him and grind out a win or even tap him out.

This fight is going to be huge on a lot of levels. The Ultimate Fighter has already set ratings record. The show was practically given up for dead before this season. 13 million people combined to watch Slice’s last two fights at midnight on a Saturday night. It is conceivable that they could draw the same amount of viewers between the first airing and replays by the end of the week. I can personally tell you that the fight has a huge buzz already among my friends and colleagues.

The interesting part of this equation will be what happens if Slice loses. Will the ratings drastically drop? Will UFC jump on the first opportunity to get him back in competition due to an injury? UFC was faced with a similar scenario in the first season when Chris Leben lost his fight. Leben was the star of the show and UFC quickly found a way to get him back in the game after someone went down with an injury. My prediction on the fight is that Nelson wins a boring two-round decision, similar to Slice’s James Thompson fight (which Slice shockingly won). I just don’t think Slice is ready for someone with Nelson’s ground game.

Kimbo Slice Will Fight On Next The Ultimate Fighter

September 24, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

kimboslice It didn’t take long for UFC to cash in. Kimbo Slice will fight next week on The Ultimate Fighter. Kimbo will fight former IFL champion Roy Nelson on the UFC reality show next Wednesday night. Nelson and Slice will fight for free on Spike TV in a fight that could shatter ratings records.

TUF coach Rashad Evans wasted no time calling out Kimbo Slice. Evans made the Slice vs. Nelson fight with his first overall fight selection. Evans has openly questioned the skills of Slice since Week 1. Slice seems to be the star pupil under his coach Rampage Jackson. This will likely be the most anticipated bout in The Ultimate Fighter history since Josh Koshcheck vs. Chris Leben in TUF season 1.

This week’s show was a big of a letdown coming off of last week. I thought the show kind of dragged at times. The show focused a lot on Roy Nelson and Kimbo Slice which made sense after the fight announcement. Evans and Rampage had a fun faceoff over training times. Next week’s preview showed a blowup which is anything but fun between the two. Between the anticipated blowup and Slice’s first UFC match, it is truly a can’t-miss show.

James McSweeney defeated Wes Shivers in this week’s fight. Shivers is a former NFL player and stands 6′7” and 270. The guy is jacked! Unfortunately size isn’t always a good thing in UFC. Shivers gassed early. McSweeney relied on his kick boxing background and peppered Shivers with strikes. It was hard to watch as Shivers had McSweeney in several compromising positions but just couldn’t finish. McSweeney won a 2-0-1 decision.

The real downer of the show is knowing that there won’t be a Rampage- Evans fight. It is hard buying into the hype of a fight that isn’t going to happen. Dana White and the UFC really need to make things right with Rampage. Rampage-Evans could break records by the end of the season. The show is doing a tremendous job of building up the fight. Dana White talks of boxing not being able to pull of matches the fans want to see. Dana White may have to eat his words if this match doesn’t happen.

Check back on camelclutchblog.com next Wednesday for a full preview of Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson. That is a TUF fight well worthy of an entire blog. 13 million people combined tuned in to watch Kimbo Slice’s last two fights. Chances are that the numbers will be blown out of the water with UFC’s promotional machine behind it. The downfall here is that it could be one and done as far as the ratings if Slice is beaten. Regardless, The Ultimate Fighter next Wednesday night is the place to be if you are an MMA fan!

Dana White Talks Lots of Kimbo Slice

June 04, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Entertainment, Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, Videos, WWE / Pro Wrestling

Check out this video of an interview UFC president Dana White did earlier this week. The interview is all about Kimbo Slice in The Ultimate Fighter. Dana talks quite candidly about previous statements he made about Kimbo, Kimbo’s chances in TUF, whether he will receive special treatment, how the deal went down, and more. I have to say that this is a pretty interesting interview and sheds a lot of insight into the recent turn of events.

I wrote an article earlier in the week with my thoughts on Kimbo in TUF. Check it out via the link below.

Kimbo Slice in UFC The Ultimate Fighter 10

June 02, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, WWE / Pro Wrestling

kimboslice In what has to be shocking news for MMA fans, Kimbo Slice will be coming to UFC. Kimbo will be one of the contestants on the next series of The Ultimate Fighter. It looks like Dana White has done a complete 360 when it comes to Slice.

I am stunned by the news. White has been outspoken for the last two years on Slice. Here are some of the statements White has made in the last few years on Slice.

“Kimbo Slice sucks, like I’ve said now for the last few months. This [expletive] guy can’t fight and he got knocked out in 13 seconds by a guy who didn’t win The Ultimate Fighter.”

“What has the guy done to deserve to be in the UFC? Nothing. I don’t consider him a real athlete or anything. He won’t win The Ultimate Fighter. The offer is out there if he wants to take it and he won’t win it. I might [put a heavyweight show together just for him].”

>Well that is exactly what he did. UFC’s next season of The Ultimate Fighter will feature nothing but heavyweights. As written about here, Quinton Jackson and former TUF winner Rashad Evans will coach the teams. Slice will have to work his way up from the bottom and won’t be given any breaks due to his stardom.

“I don’t know if there’s anybody I’ve talked more smack about. I don’t know how he’s going to do. I gotta respect that (he’s coming on the show). We’re gonna find out this season if he’s for real or not,” said Dana White.

Reportedly, the first episode has been shot in the series. White said the following about Kimbo in the first episode. “We shot episode one today. We walked into the gym and I tell you what, he was pretty serious. He wasn’t messing around, he wasn’t joking,” laughed White. “He wasn’t laughing. I don’t think he’s a big Dana White fan either. How could you be after all the things that have gone back and forth?”

Is this a move of desperation or brilliance from Dana White? At first thought, it makes White look like a complete hypocrite. At the same time, I am counting down the months until the season premiere. I predict monster ratings and the most successful season of the show for Spike and UFC. In other words, I think the move is brilliant.

It also gives White an out in promoting Slice for future fights. Chances are that Slice won’t win the competition. White can now promote Slice in the same freak show fights that he criticized Elite in doing. Even if Slice is out in the first week, he did train on TUF and everyone wins in Dana White’s world.

Even Quinton Jackson was a relatively boring coach when he coached Season 7 of the show. I think a big part of that was opposing coach Forrest Griffin. He was just too nice of a guy which is a great character trait, but makes for boring competition among coaches on a television show. The two had very little beef and as much as editing tried to manipulate a situation, it wasn’t working.

The best seasons have been the ones with a true grudge between coaches. I don’t know if the magic created between Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz could ever be redone. Matt Hughes and Matt Serra came close, but it didn’t have the history of Ken and Tito. I think Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir would have created great tension as coaches. Other than that, I can’t think of a natural rivalry that would translate well here between coaches.

Evans becomes the third former winner of the show to return as a coach. That is another thing that has turned me off in the past. Taking nothing away from Matt Serra and Forrest Griffin, but I’d rather see veterans with a lengthy list of accomplishments in the coaching spots. It just seemed kind of cheesy, especially when the first few seasons featured Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, and Matt Hughes as coaches.

The dynamic between Jackson and Evans has a lot of potential for the show. Evans can be a really cocky guy. Both guys are big pro wrestling fans and get the whole idea of hyping a fight. Between their charisma and natural promo abilities, their fight has the potential to turn into the biggest grudge match of the year.
