The NFL Betting Edge for Thursday September 10

September 10, 2009 By: Derek Sabato Category: NFL / NCAA Football

Peyton Manning CommercialWith the NFL returning tonight I figured it was time to return to The Betting Edge. Today I’ll be speaking about tonight’s NFL game, the Camel Clutch Blog Fantasy League, my own personal league’s and my thoughts on the Delaware legislature for gambling.

The fact that the courts overruled the Delaware legislature on gambling is beyond stupid. It’s almost impossible to win one game let alone a 5 team teaser. In the state of the economy currently having additional sources of income is ridiclous to not look at. What better way is it to seep some of the money from Pennsylvania & New Jersey (two of the most populated bookie states on the East Coast) than offer gambling? This goes back to the fact that if Las Vegas wasn’t around… the professional sports you know & love would not currently be in operation. All the sports may say they hate Vegas… but deep down it drives the interest in them.

I run a Survivor Pool with over 40 people in it and so far the consenses top pick is Baltimore to win outright over Kansas City. This is my pick as well to win straight up.

I’m also taking part in two money leagues this year for Fantasy Football. Both leagues have 10 teams. One league has this starting setup: 1 QB, 2 RB, 1 RB/WR, 2 WR, 1 WR/TE, 1 TE, 1 DEF, 1 K. The other league has 1 QB, 2 RB, 1 RB/WR, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 DEF, 1 K. I personally like the setup without the WR/TE but what can you do. Both leagues were a simple buy-in of $50. The 2nd league we have sort of a side pot going on. Every add/drop after 5 is $2. The winner of that pot is the person with the team that scores the most points throughout the year. We also have a side bet of $10 from everyone that contributes to a $33 bonus to the person who’s QB scored the most points, $33 bonus to the person who’s RB scored the most points, and a $33 bonus to the person who’s WR scored the most points. Here’s the tricky part. That person has to be starting and active for you to earn those points. So last year Ronnie Brown ran for 4 touchdowns and a sick amount of fantasy points. If you didn’t start him, you wouldn’t get credit for it. All little ways to make the game more interesting and fun.

In my first money league this is my matchup:

Matt Schaub vs. Peyton Manning

Chris Johnson vs. Michael Turner

Frank Gore vs. Thomas Jones

Darren McFadden vs. Willie Parker

Anquan Boldin vs. Steve Smith

Braylon Edwards vs. Derrick Mason

Anthony Gonzalez vs. Josh Morgan

Tony Scheffler vs. Owen Daniels

Miami Dolphins Defense vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Defense

Neil Rackers vs. David Akers

ESPN is calling me a 22 point underdog and I agree. I need Schaub & Johnson to pull a really good game out of their ass to even have a shot. I think my WRs will do good and everything else is a push but this is a tough team to face Week 1 when I won the first 7 games in this league last year.

In my other money league this is my matchup:

Donovan McNabb vs. Matt Ryan

Michael Turner vs. Brian Westbrook

Clinton Portis vs. Frank Gore

Wes Welker vs. Percy Harvin

Reggie Wayne vs. Terrell Owens

Bernard Berrian vs. Santonio Holmes

Dustin Keller vs. Antonio Gates

Miami Dolphins Defense vs. Tennessee Titans Defense

John Carney vs. Stephen Gostowski

ESPN is calling me a 20 point favorite and I agree. This is the classic battle that comes up in fantasy all the time. Your home team quarterback (Donovan McNabb) that you draft and expect to produce is facing your home team running back (Brian Westbrook) who you expect he’s going to throw to for a lot. The other classic fantasy battle is the fact that I have Frank Gore on one team and here I’m facing him. That’s why you need to play every league seperate and can’t worry about what’s going on with everything else. I’m worried in my Tight End matchup but if I can get by with a 2 point difference away from me then I think I can handle and win this game easily and start the season off right.

The Camel Clutch Blog has started a fantasy league and you can follow along at ESPN by visiting the following link: http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/leagueoffice?leagueId=404316. I’m a 24 point favorite over Justin Rowland and I plan on almost doubling that to take an early lead onto the championship. I wonder what I win?

This brings us to tonight’s game. Pittsburgh vs. Tennessee. The Super Bowl champs are giving Tennesee 6 and the over/under is 35. The play I would make tonight (and I probably will end up doing it) is teasing the Steelers and the under 6 points moving the line to Pittsburgh EVEN and under 41. I’ll lay $50.

The Betting Edge for Thursday June 11

June 11, 2009 By: Derek Sabato Category: Major League Baseball, NBA, Sports

ryanfranklinWelcome back to The Betting Edge. Man did I have a bad day on Tuesday. It all started after the column was posted. My fellow writer (and fatty) Erik Espenberg decided to bust my balls over my decision to pick the Red Sox & Yankees under 9 1/2.

About how the last time Burnett & Beckett pitched they both got lit up. Well thankfully for me it was only Burnett that got lit up as I covered that to win $9. That was the ONLY bet I had on Wednesday that won. So instead of bringing up the past let’s get to what I started at today and what I went with today.

I started today at $31.45 and bet $5 to win $2.08 on the St. Louis Cardinals getting 1 1/2 to cover on the Florida Marlins. As I write this it’s the bottom of the 8th and the St. Louis Cardinals just had a 3 run top of the 8th to take the lead 6-5 so that’s holding well with Ryan Franklin coming in to pitch with one out.

I decided next to go with Yovani Gallardo and the Milwaukee Brewers to give 1 1/2 and defeat the Colorado Rockies. So far going into the bottom of the 2nd the Rockies are up 1-0 so I’m going to need some help there from Milwaukee’s bats even though Gallardo just pitched out of a bases loaded no-out jam with only the one run given up. Laid $5 to win $5.50.

Next I went with a 2 team parlay. I took the Philadelphia Phillies giving 1 1/2 against the New York Mets and the Cincinnati Reds getting 1 1/2 against the Washington Nationals. The Phillies are coming off a high of the win last night and the Mets can’t be happy with getting 14 singles and the only extra base hit came from Mike Pelfrey so I expect that to be easy. I will always take a team that’s an underdog to the Washington Nationals with the points. ALWAYS. Betting $5 to win $13.69.

And now I did something stupid. I went back to a bet I lost on Tuesday. But it’s my column and I do what I want. I did a 4 point teaser for the Lakers getting 6 and Game 4 of the NBA Finals to finish under 205. It’s risky… but that’s why I enjoy gambling. Betting $10 to win $9.09.

This… along with my futures bet on the Phillies to win the World Series and the Lakers to win the NBA Finals might be all I have left after tonight if everything goes wrong. Looks like I’ll either be reloading soon or coming off a great high going into tomorrow and Interleague action along with Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

And as I’m watching the Cardinals pitch themselves into a jam I hope my money will be staying in my bank account and not getting transferred over as Ryan Franklin is able to get Ronny Paulino to line out to center to send this to the 9th Inning. PHEW.

The Betting Edge for Tuesday June 09

June 09, 2009 By: Derek Sabato Category: Major League Baseball, NBA, NHL, Sports

johansantana The Tuesday edition of The Betting Edge is coming at you with some negative results. I ended yesterday at $52.45 with a negative total of $6.78 from yesterday. How did I get there?

My first instinct on Detroit beating the White Sox in the first game was correct with the Tigers winning 5-4 so that gave me a win of betting $5 and getting $5 on top so that started off the day with me up $10. My $15 Padres-Diamondbacks parlay didn’t work out too well as the Padres offense woke up for a 6-3 win killing my under bet and putting me down $5.

A late instinct called me to play the Oakland A’s to beat the Minnesota Twins which they did at I bet $5 to win $3.22.

Tonight I like a few different games. I see the Lakers winning this series in 6 so the Magic have to take a game and tonight seems like a good night. I don’t like them enough to cover though. I’m going to tease the Lakers and the under in a 4 point teaser. The Lakers are getting 4 points as underdogs and the under is 198. What the tease does is it pushes what the Lakers are getting to 8 points and the under to 202. I’m betting $15 to win $13.63.

With the Yankees – Red Sox rivalry it’s hard to judge the games because they swing so much. But I see Josh Beckett & AJ Burnett pitching lights out tonight so I’m taking under 9 1/2 runs for $5.

I’m a Phillies fan and with Johan Santana throwing tonight for the Mets in New York (if they get the game in) the money line gets busted easily so with an upset I like the Phillies as underdogs winning the game outright since I can lay $5 to win $7.50. The only reason I’m betting this game besides the fact I’m a Phillies fan is that to lay $5 to walk away with $12.50 total is a huge swing for an underdog division game.

In my last bet of the night I’m taking the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Pittsburgh in a straight up bet laying $5 to win $5.25.

Let me know what you’re betting and what you’re liking. Anyone send me results of what they’re doing in either real or online betting will get a special mention in this column. You can reach me at dereksabato@gmail.com. And remember, it’s not gambling if you have an edge.

The Betting Edge for Monday June 08

June 08, 2009 By: Derek Sabato Category: Major League Baseball, Sports

jakepeavy Welcome to the Monday edition of the Betting Edge. Hopefully you didn’t follow me on Friday as I almost literally crapped the bed.

I still have pending my Futures bet for the Philadelphia Phillies winning the World Series at 12-1 so laying $5 to win $60. My four team tease didn’t work out so down $10. Detroit Tigers didn’t show up against the Los Angeles Angels so down another $10. Still my $5 future bet to win $1 is going with the Lakers. Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees blew it against David Price and the Rays so down another $10.

I put $5 on Urijah Faber to win and if is hands weren’t broken I figure he would’ve been able to pull it out. But instead Mike Brown won and I’m down another $5.

My first win of the weekend was Raul Ibanez again getting more total bases than Russell Martin and I laid $5 to win $4.34 so now that makes it a $9.34 back in the positive. That’s where my weekend came back. But then again the next bet I lost was the straight bet of $5 to win $30 of the Phillies beating the Dodgers on Saturday by 2 runs. Oops.

I did win with the Phillies on Saturday as they covered 1 1/2 to put $7.63 back in the positive column. But Sunday the Lakers couldn’t cover 7 so back down $5. I laid $5 to win $3.12 when Detroit beat the PISS out of Pittsburgh. My big bet on Sunday was a 2 team parlay between the Diamondbacks winning straight up and the Phillies getting 1 1/2. I bet $10 and walked away with $15.50. My next bet was Toronto & Kansas City under 8 runs and with Roy Halladay pitching I walked away with betting $5 to win $4.34. I’m up to $59.23 from the weekend.

I’m betting $5 on Detroit getting 1 1/2 to win $5 in the first game of their doubleheader today against the Chicago White Sox. I like Detroit for some reason and it’s gonna be a turn around game for Gallaragga. I can feel it.

My big bet of the day will be the San Diego Padres beating Arizona Diamondbacks and parlaying it with under 7 1/2 runs. Jake Peavy’s back after his awful outing against the Philadelphia Phillies and considering how hard it is to score runs in San Diego I’m betting $15 to win $30.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more baseball, a fantasy baseball update, and Game 3 of the NBA Finals along with what possibly could be the last game of the Stanley Cup Finals. You can reach me at dereksabato@gmail.com! I look forward to hearing feedback and possibly bet ideas.

The Betting Edge for Friday June 05

June 05, 2009 By: Derek Sabato Category: Major League Baseball, NBA, Sports

CarlosZambranoHello everyone and welcome to my first column here at CamelClutchBlog.com. I won over $3,000 last year in football betting and over $1,000 during March Madness. Lately I’ve been turning my attention to baseball and I figured I’d share what I’ve been using lately to win.

I use Betus.com to wager online. It’s the easiest way to do it online with lots of ways to deposit and easy to withdraw. It takes sometime for you to receive your withdrawls but that’s just the way it is with online gambling right now due to the wonderful United States not getting together to tax online gambling to make our country more money. But that’s a column for another day.

If you’re interseted in joining betus.com e-mail me at dereksabato@gmail.com and I can refer you to the website.

Now onto what I did last night. Last night I decided to throw $50 into Betus.com. I liked the idea of Cole Hamels pitching against Clayton Kershaw and Raul Ibanez getting more total bases than Russell Martin. I also liked the Los Angeles Lakers -6 against the Orlando Magic. I bet $10 to win $9.09 with the Lakers and obviously they ended up covering winning by 25.

Next the Phillies were favored -1 1/2 against the Dodgers and I bet $10 to win $15 which Cole Hamels threw a 3-0 shutout to cover me. Also Raul Ibanez was even in getting more total bases than Russell Martin and I wagered $10 to win $10 and did so with Ibanez’s RBI double and he moved over to 3rd on a groundout which was more than what Russell Martin ever did never getting on base.

Tonight I’m feeling a little risky so I’m doing a 4 team MLB parlay. Carlos Zambrano returns from his suspension looking for his 100th win with the Cubs favored by 1 1/2 against the Cinncinatti Reds and Micah Owings. I have enough faith in Big Z to win his 100th that he’ll make it through 7 before turning it over to Carlos Marmol & Kevin Gregg to finish it out and cover nicely.

The Baltimore Orioles are underdogs against the Oakland A’s getting 1 1/2. I like the way Jeremy Guthrie’s been throwing as of late with his 10 strike outs and with Wieters back there calling pitches I don’t see any problem in the Orioles covering 1 1/2 and to be honest I actually think they’ll win tonight. Oakland won 3 of 4 from the White Sox and I think they’ll have a drop off effect with Dallas Braden pitching. He’s been their best pitcher all season and is due for a bad outing.

Chris Volstad is throwing for the Florida Marlins and is going against Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants. Volstad’s been excellent this year while Zito has been… well Barry Zito. Take the Marlins giving 1 1/2 and watch them cover the spread in the 1st 3 innings.

In my sleeper of the 4 I think it’s time for Francisco Liriano to finally wake up and pitch his game against the Mariners against one of the best pitchers in the game in Felix Hernandez. Joe Mauer will lead Liriano through 7 innings while providing the spark for the offense and the Twins will cover 1 1/2.

I’m laying $10 to win $115.26. Those are not the only bets today. Today I’m also taking the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series at 12-1 odds and laying $5 to win $60. This will probably be the lowest these odds are gonna be for a while so it’s time to strike while the iron (and the team) is hot. Also I do not recommend playing the Phillies tonight with Jamie Moyer pitching and if anything I’d bet on the Dodgers covering 1 1/2 but I don’t play against Philadelphia teams.

I’m also laying $10 on Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers to stay hot against the Los Angeles Angels with Ervin Santana returning to the mound for the first time since 2007. Bet $10 to win $11.50.

Also don’t be afraid to lay money on the Los Angeles Lakers to win the whole series. I’m putting $5 on the Lakers to win (I have them getting the series in 6) to win $1. Hey, it’s easy money although the odds aren’t good.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back next week with some weekend stuff including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and NBA Finals Game 2 along with some baseball and maybe a horse race thrown in there. You can reach me at dereksabato@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you and good luck!
