The Movement Lives On!

June 11, 2009 By: Chris Behringer Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

shanedouglas No matter how many times wrestling fans think the spirit of the original ECW is dead, it manages to rise from the grave. Two events transpired this week proving that the hardcore movement started in a dilapidated bingo hall in 1993 does in fact live on.

On Saturday night, June 27th, “The Franchise” Shane Douglas will be inducted into the Hardcore Hall of Fame at the ECW reunion show Legends of the Arena. For years, Douglas was the voice of angry wrestling fans that sought alternatives to the WWF & WCW. To this day, fans of the original ECW talk about the night Douglas threw down the NWA World Heavyweight Title and the hour long match between himself, Sabu, & fellow Hardcore Hall of Fame/WWE Hall of Fame inductee Terry Funk.

There are those that say ECW fans started losing their voice & that Douglas sold out when he left ECW for jobs in the “big two”. The fans, however, have voiced their approval over the decision to induct Shane and are certain to come out and support a hardcore legend. With the current state of the wrestling business today & knowing Shane’s knack for cutting profanity laced promos, one has to wonder what the Franchise is going to say as the hardcore faithful once again gather in the Mecca of pro wrestling.

Last night, WWE presented the Extreme Rules (formerly One Night Stand) PPV event. In the shock of the evening (at least in my mind), Tommy Dreamer finally captured his second ECW Title.

Not since July 2006 has a star from the original ECW held the brand’s title (the last to do so was Rob Van Dam & we all know what happened there). Many fans, myself included, thought last night was going to be Dreamer’s final match with WWE. I am happy to eat a big plate of crow on that one & see Tommy get one final hurrah in WWE as the ECW Champion. Nobody knows how long the title reign will last, but personally, I’m hoping he gets to wrestle at the Night of Champions PPV event in Philadelphia next month. The ECW faithful in attendance would give him nothing short of a hero’s welcome. For fans, it will be a great way to say thank you one more time. For Tommy Dreamer, it would be a hardcore homecoming he would never forget.

Congratulations to both men on their achievements. Until next time, stay extreme.

CM Punk Cashes in at WWE Extreme Rules

June 08, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

cmpunkIt was an extreme night for sure at WWE Extreme Rules. All of the world titles changed hands. The last change of the night was the most shocking. CM Punk won his second WWE world title after cashing in his Money in the Bank and beating Jeff Hardy.

Jeff Hardy defeated Edge in a grueling Ladder Match for the WWE world heavyweight title. Following the match, CM Punk ran out and cashed in his Money in the Bank. Punk nailed two Go to Sleeps and pinned an exhausted Hardy for his second WWE world title reign.

This was definitely a surprise. Most, including myself have predicted Punk pulling this move on WWE Backlash and WWE Judgment Day. Going into WWE Extreme Rules, his MITB situation was an afterthought. It was perfect timing for the WWE and Punk to pull a surprise and catch the fans sleeping.

You would expect the crowd to go crazy one way or the other for the shocking moment. I think the biggest shock was the lack of a crowd reaction. The crowd really didn’t seem to care, as opposed to the previous title changes. It could have been burn out, however the crowd was on their feet for Hardy’s win moments earlier.

Punk becomes the 31st WWE world heavyweight champion. Punk becomes the top dog on WWE SmackDown. Punk didn’t play into the heel persona, so he may actually wind up coming out of this portrayed as an opportunistic babyface. He has decent challengers either way, but nothing earth shattering.

Personally, I have never gotten it with CM Punk. I have found him to be the most overrated wrestler I have ever seen going back to his days on the independent scene. I just never understood the hype. I don’t think he is all that exciting and quite honestly, his movements seem slow and predictable most of the time. Obviously I am in the minority because he has quite a fan base.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Punks first title reign on the WWE RAW brand would have to be considered a flop. He was barely allowed to go over on anyone and came across was lucky rather than good. On the SmackDown brand, he has less political hurdles to jump over and should get a fair opportunity to succeed.

Batista beat Randy Orton for the WWE title earlier in the night in a Steel Cage Match. Batista pinned Orton easily after a Batista Bomb. The match was rather short, but the fans were really into it from the go. This is Batista’s first WWE championship. Batista becomes the 91st champion in the lineage of the title.

ECW fans will be happy to know that Tommy Dreamer finally won the ECW world title. Dreamer pinned Jack Swagger in a Triple Threat Hardcore Match. This is Dreamer’s second ECW title win. Dreamer was a one-night transitional ECW champion in the original ECW promotion. Dreamer’s contract had been up so it is expected he renewed, even if just for a short-time.
