Anderson Silva Is UFC’s Biggest Asset And Its Biggest Nightmare

August 09, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Anderson Silva silenced his critics with a knockout win over Forrest Griffin in Round 1 at UFC 101. Griffin was believed to be the first guy who could challenge Silva. If Silva handled his first real threat that easy, who is left that can beat him? Can UFC even challenge him at this point? If you are UFC, what do you do with Anderson Silva?

Anderson Silva is both UFC’s greatest gift and biggest problem. Fighting in two weight classes gives UFC a ton of potential Super Fights for Silva. Yet Silva is so good, that all of these fights could ruin UFC’s most marketable stars in a second. Forrest Griffin is a prime example of a fighter who may never be taken seriously again as a result of UFC 101.

Who will give Silva his toughest test? Dana White is already on record stating that Silva has cleaned out the division. Is it in UFC’s best interest to move Silva up to 205 permanently to make the division competitive? Will Silva do the same in UFC’s toughest division at light heavyweight? I present a few possibilities at best of guys that can and may test the Spider if given the opportunity.

Georges St. Pierre – Fans have been screaming for GSP vs. Anderson Silva match for a year now. It appears more and more that GSP isn’t too interested in this fight. GSP has danced around the question whenever asked about fighting Silva. Even UFC match makers don’t seem too interested in making this fight? Why would such an obvious Super Fight be avoided? Because GSP and UFC know that St. Pierre won’t win.

GSP’s toughest opponent thus far has been B.J. Penn. Penn fought above his normal fighting weight, giving GSP a slight advantage. GSP would be the one having to come up for a fight with Silva. I think that with the power of Silva, GSP’s ground game would be negated. At the same time, I don’t think GSP can match Silva on his feet. I think GSP would give him a challenge, but it would be a far cry from the ultimate match that would be expected.

Dan Henderson – Henderson will be Silva’s next opponent at middleweight. Dan has the distinction of being the only man to ever win a round against Silva. Henderson has said himself that he got away from his game plan in the second round of their previous fight. Will things be different if Hendo sticks to his game in their next fight?

I don’t think there is anyone at middleweight that has a better chance of beating Silva. Henderson exposed Silva’s weak points in their first fight. On their feet, Silva has the better skill set to out box Henderson. I think Silva knows this and will do all he can to finish this fight fast and on their feet. However, if there is anyone that can get a lucky shot in on Silva it is Dan Henderson.

Lyoto Machida – I think UFC will begin pushing a Machida-Silva Super Fight to take heat off of GSP. Machida has just dominated his last few opponents in UFC. Other than Tito Ortiz, I can’t recall Machida even being challenged in the octagon. The light heavyweight champion looked flawless against Rashad Evans to the point that UFC announcer Joe Rogan proclaimed it the “Machida Era.”

I don’t think this would be as much of a challenge to Silva as some would think. Machida is actually the perfect opponent for Silva. Machida will sit back and not take risks. Machida is elusive like Silva but I don’t think he is as powerful. On paper this looks like the ultimate match of unbeatable fighters. However, I don’t think it will present the excitement that would be expected from a fight of this caliber.

Rampage Jackson – The hype for a fight like this would be second to none. Rampage will undoubtedly talk a good game and have people believing. The problem with Rampage is that you never know what Rampage you are going to get. I don’t think a focused Rampage on the top of his game would stand much of a chance against Silva.

Rampage is a great all-around striker and grappler, but Silva is better. I could see Rampage getting frustrated by the middle of the second round. Forrest Griffin already wrote the book on how to beat Rampage. Silva will just bob and weave with strikes until Rampage opens up for a knockout. I think of all the potential money matches on the table for Silva, Rampage would be the easiest opponent for the Spider.

Vitor Belfort – Dana White has gone on record and believes that Vitor could challenge Anderson at 185. I just don’t know how interested Belfort is in fighting at 185. Like Rampage, you just don’t know what you will get out of Vitor. To give Belfort his due, he has looked great in his last few fights.

I don’t see this one as a big problem at all for Silva. I think Silva has the advantage over Belfort in all of Belfort’s strongest techniques. Like the Machida fight, I also think this one would be lackluster in terms of fan expectations. I will wait and see how Belfort looks against Rich Franklin before I label him as any kind of a threat to Anderson Silva.

Randy Couture – Couture is the wildcard in this bunch. Couture has already stated that he would be willing to move down in weight to fight Lyoto Machida. I love Randy’s heart, but at his age he just can’t match power against top heavyweights like Lesnar, Mir, and Congo. Couture should be fighting at light heavyweight in my opinion.

I think this match could be very interesting. Couture still posses some heavy hands. It will really come down to quickness and reflexes in my opinion. Can Randy at his age react quickly against an open Anderson? Hendo already wrote the playbook on how a great wrestler should fight Silva. If Randy has the reflexes in him, he could ground and pound Silva for three rounds at 205. I would actually give Randy the best shot of pulling the upset of all the above mentioned fighters.

In the end, UFC is faced with the problem of having the greatest fighter in MMA on their roster. Do you sacrifice and expose your elite fighters to Silva or do you offer him some unique tests? Could Anderson Silva be the first guy to dominate two divisions in UFC history? What happens if he decides to move up to heavyweight?

Anderson Silva is UFC’s biggest asset and their biggest nightmare.

UFC 101 Preview and Predictions

August 06, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts

Forrest Griffin UFC attempts to follow its biggest event of all-time with UFC 101 this Saturday. UFC travels to Philadelphia, PA for the first-time in UFC history. UFC will feature a lightweight title bout in the main-event. However it is the semi-main event on the show that has had everyone talking for three months.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (24-4) will move up to light heavyweight and take on former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (16-5). While the odds are stacked against Griffin, the odds are in favor of an exciting fight here. A victory by Forrest Griffin would put him into UFC history for ending the Anderson Silva era.

Silva has done nothing but dominate since coming into UFC. Overall Silva is 12-2 since 2004. One would assume that Silva’s dominance would warm into the hearts of MMA fans. Ironically Silva has turned into one of the most hated men in UFC. UFC fans and Dana White expect more from their fighters than winning.

Silva has been heavily criticized for his performance in his last two fights. Silva was criticized for being boring and non aggressive. As a matter of a fact Dana White called Silva’s performance “embarrassing” following his win over Thales Leites. It almost appears that Silva is so good, that he appears boring in the octagon.

In most sports, someone like Anderson Silva would get a tremendous amount of respect from fans and UFC officials. Yet, there is a bit of a pardox in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Great fighters are often booed in favor of sloppy fighters who just go out there and brawl. Wanderlei Silva is a big UFC fan favorite, yet he has only won one UFC fight since returning. Dana White makes no bones about it, he likes exciting fighters period. Winning is only part of the game in being a successful UFC fighter.

This is what makes this the perfect match for Silva and UFC fans. Griffin will undoubtedly be Silva’s most aggressive opponent. Silva will have no choice but to engage Griffin. Griffin openly questions his own talent, yet trumps the heart he shows in fights. Griffin’s aggression paid off when he dominated Rampage Jackson and won the UFC light heavyweight title.

On the flip side, Griffin’s fighting style has worked against him. Griffin can get a bit jumpy in there and deviate from his game plan. Case in point would be his match against Rashad Evans. Evans is a very patient fighter, much like Silva. Griffin looked anxious and started pressing the fight. Evans took advantage of this with a TKO victory in Round 3 and won the title from Griffin.

I haven’t been this excited for a fight in a long time. This one is probably not going to see Round 3. Chances are these two are goingto come out flying after one another. Not too mention, this will be taking place in Philadelphia and Philadelphia fans like fireworks. Myprediction is a shootout with Anderson Silva taking the win. Silva’s title is not on the line. Yet a win by Forrest would put him into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Griffin is a +250 underdog on  BetUs.com as of this writing. Considering the fact that it is extremely rare for all of the favorites to win on UFC shows, I’d roll the dice with this one. A Griffin win isn’t impossible and there is a good chance you may get better odds on fight night.

The actual main-event of the show features B.J. Penn(13-5) defending the UFC lightweight title against Kenny Florian (11-3). Living in Philadelphia, I am kind of surprised to see these guys featured on the local posters over Griffin-Silva. In my opinion, this fight is getting more hype than it likely deserves.

Penn was destroyed several months ago by Georges St. Pierre. I think too many people are using that fight to analyze this one. For one thing, losing to St.Pierre says nothing about how good or bad you are. Georges is arguably the best p4p fighter in the world. I think too many people are taking too much away from that fight.

B.J. Penn is still one of the best fighters in the sport. I am actually surprised that Silva is more favored to win his fight than Penn. Prior to the St.Pierre fights, Penn was on an amazing streak. Penn arguably had the toughest string of opponents than anyone in his last three fights. Not only did Penn win them, he destroyed and dominated his competition.

For Kenny Florian, I just don’t get it at all. I don’t understand all of the love that Ken Flo gets from MMA fans. He seems like a nice enough guy (and we are LinkedIn together), but I don’t think this guy has a prayer. I don’t know if I would even consider him the top contender in the division at this point.

Florian did dominate Joe Stevenson in his last fight. However, a deep look at Florian’s competition tells me he hasn’t been tested. Florian lost against his two most notable opponents in Diego Sanchez and Sean Sherk (although Sherk tested positive for enhancement drugs). I just don’t see what he is going to bring to the table here that will give B.J. fits?

I just don’t see what Florian brings to the table that is better than what Penn has to offer? They are both BJJ fighters, yet Penn is an expert. If Florian tries to go to the ground against Penn, he is going to be submitted or dominated. Penn showed his stand up brilliance in the Sherk fight. Florian doesn’t have much of a chance standing with Penn. The only one that will beat B.J. Penn is B.J. Penn on Saturday night.

I predict a five-round fight out of these two guys. I think Florian will be cautious and play the waiting game. For Penn, I would expect him to play the counter game as well early on. Penn is chomping at the bit to avenge his loss to St.Pierre. If Penn hasn’t gotten that fight out of his head by now, he could be in trouble. In the end, I predict a decision in Penn’s favor.

Florian is a +180 underdog as of this writing on BetUS.com. I wouldn’t even bother. I would take a stab on one of the undercard dogs before placing a dime on Florian at +180 odds. I don’t see this one as being that close. I would expect Florian to have Griffin odds and vice versa. At -230 Penn is a great bargain in my opinion for you MMA gamblers out there.

In closing, it should be pointed out here where two of the main-event fighters came from. Kenny Florian and Forrest Griffin both entered UFC through UFC’s reality competition, The Ultimate Fighter. Griffin won the first season while Florian finished second in his division. UFC really should be applauded for grooming two fighters off of a reality show into two bonafide main-event competitors. Maybe there is some hope for Kimbo Slice yet?

Dana White Talks Lots of Kimbo Slice

June 04, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Entertainment, Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, Videos, WWE / Pro Wrestling

Check out this video of an interview UFC president Dana White did earlier this week. The interview is all about Kimbo Slice in The Ultimate Fighter. Dana talks quite candidly about previous statements he made about Kimbo, Kimbo’s chances in TUF, whether he will receive special treatment, how the deal went down, and more. I have to say that this is a pretty interesting interview and sheds a lot of insight into the recent turn of events.

I wrote an article earlier in the week with my thoughts on Kimbo in TUF. Check it out via the link below.

Kimbo Slice in UFC The Ultimate Fighter 10

June 02, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, WWE / Pro Wrestling

kimboslice In what has to be shocking news for MMA fans, Kimbo Slice will be coming to UFC. Kimbo will be one of the contestants on the next series of The Ultimate Fighter. It looks like Dana White has done a complete 360 when it comes to Slice.

I am stunned by the news. White has been outspoken for the last two years on Slice. Here are some of the statements White has made in the last few years on Slice.

“Kimbo Slice sucks, like I’ve said now for the last few months. This [expletive] guy can’t fight and he got knocked out in 13 seconds by a guy who didn’t win The Ultimate Fighter.”

“What has the guy done to deserve to be in the UFC? Nothing. I don’t consider him a real athlete or anything. He won’t win The Ultimate Fighter. The offer is out there if he wants to take it and he won’t win it. I might [put a heavyweight show together just for him].”

>Well that is exactly what he did. UFC’s next season of The Ultimate Fighter will feature nothing but heavyweights. As written about here, Quinton Jackson and former TUF winner Rashad Evans will coach the teams. Slice will have to work his way up from the bottom and won’t be given any breaks due to his stardom.

“I don’t know if there’s anybody I’ve talked more smack about. I don’t know how he’s going to do. I gotta respect that (he’s coming on the show). We’re gonna find out this season if he’s for real or not,” said Dana White.

Reportedly, the first episode has been shot in the series. White said the following about Kimbo in the first episode. “We shot episode one today. We walked into the gym and I tell you what, he was pretty serious. He wasn’t messing around, he wasn’t joking,” laughed White. “He wasn’t laughing. I don’t think he’s a big Dana White fan either. How could you be after all the things that have gone back and forth?”

Is this a move of desperation or brilliance from Dana White? At first thought, it makes White look like a complete hypocrite. At the same time, I am counting down the months until the season premiere. I predict monster ratings and the most successful season of the show for Spike and UFC. In other words, I think the move is brilliant.

It also gives White an out in promoting Slice for future fights. Chances are that Slice won’t win the competition. White can now promote Slice in the same freak show fights that he criticized Elite in doing. Even if Slice is out in the first week, he did train on TUF and everyone wins in Dana White’s world.

Even Quinton Jackson was a relatively boring coach when he coached Season 7 of the show. I think a big part of that was opposing coach Forrest Griffin. He was just too nice of a guy which is a great character trait, but makes for boring competition among coaches on a television show. The two had very little beef and as much as editing tried to manipulate a situation, it wasn’t working.

The best seasons have been the ones with a true grudge between coaches. I don’t know if the magic created between Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz could ever be redone. Matt Hughes and Matt Serra came close, but it didn’t have the history of Ken and Tito. I think Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir would have created great tension as coaches. Other than that, I can’t think of a natural rivalry that would translate well here between coaches.

Evans becomes the third former winner of the show to return as a coach. That is another thing that has turned me off in the past. Taking nothing away from Matt Serra and Forrest Griffin, but I’d rather see veterans with a lengthy list of accomplishments in the coaching spots. It just seemed kind of cheesy, especially when the first few seasons featured Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, and Matt Hughes as coaches.

The dynamic between Jackson and Evans has a lot of potential for the show. Evans can be a really cocky guy. Both guys are big pro wrestling fans and get the whole idea of hyping a fight. Between their charisma and natural promo abilities, their fight has the potential to turn into the biggest grudge match of the year.

Full Review – UFC Undisputed 2009

May 29, 2009 By: John Yomtov Category: Sports, UFC / Mixed Martial Arts, Video Games

ufcundisputed Here it is, one of the more anticipated games of the year and most notably one of the most talked about games on the internet and in message boards all over, UFC has arrived. From the word go, UFC Undisputed packs a punch, no pun intended.

From the first fight to the top of your career you will see just how great the graphics are through out the entire game. The presentation here is second to none in terms of graphics, it has graphics that are on par with EA’s Fight Night, but there is still room for improvement.

I have noticed it both online and in local play that while the graphics are great, the Hit Detection is just not as good. What that means is when you hit someone, you hit them with your punch or kick but when those attacks miss why am i knocked out? Thats where hit detection comes in, when the contact is not made your still knocked down or out. When that is fixed everything graphics wise is all set for me. This is a common issue in most games, Hit or Collision Detection issues.

Most notable, Resident Evi has these issues a lot. You will see enemy body parts come through walls or doors as well as your own body can go through these objects. Its not bad graphics its just that someone did not follow through completely with there programming check. Even in RE5 it still happens and since these games are in HD, it makes it worse. Even games like Gears Of War, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, and Super Smash Bros. have these issues. Its not just something that is limited to Debut games for a new franchise, major titles have these issues as well. It may be something other reviewers look away from, but to me if these consoles are “Next Gen” then these issues need to be resolved.

Outside of the No-Contact Knock Outs, the amazing detail in UFC is astounding. When this game was being developed, the team actually knew the sport. Its not a game that was thrown together simply because we have the license, it was a game well thought out and developed.

Here Is The Official Box Art For Xbox 360: http://i43.tinypic.com/2hmiue8.jpg
Playstation 3: http://i41.tinypic.com/k4yv7l.jpg

While For Dreamcast, Lets try and forget this one: http://i44.tinypic.com/dn0ill.jpg

From the past games, as i mentioned in the impressions article, this game plays like an actual MMA and not a Mortal Kombat fighter. HUGE improvements were made, and actual engine was created and boom, we have a game here.

Another out of the box observation that can be very quickly made is the amount of fighters available to you at start up. This is an insanely deep roster, 80 fighters are available as well as the option to create your own fighter as well. You develop your fighter by deciding your weight, height, fighting styles, and skills. Once thats completed, its off to the octagon to do battle with some of he UFC’s best fighters. You can continue to work your fighter through the ranks of the UFC in hopes of making it to the UFC Hall Of Fame, which is a feat for anyone who just watches MMA. This opens up a lot of door ways for players and fans alike since you can take your created fighter online to fight with other created fighters or against live players using established fighters.

This works out well in a game like this more then a boxing game since a boxing game has way more attributes that can be tweaked and improved to favor the created fighter which poses a problem for an established fighter. While it is the same situation here, the UFC game has not as many attributes as a boxing game does that are as customizable, you can sill have an advantage over established fighters. While its worth noting, you can mix and match up your fighters online and locally in multiplayer and its an option that can be set to a personal preference before the fights begin. Also, now that we have a well knock developer making this game, outside of the graphics, roster and customization; there is a great presentation to be had in this game.

Will You Tap Out? http://i39.tinypic.com/2mw6t8w.jpg

Someone Needs A Cut Man: http://i41.tinypic.com/2eda74i.jpg

The octagons have amazing detail, you can see every drop of sweat, blood, and every single advertisement is in plain view. Nothing like having an energy drink advertisement being shoved down your throat while your having a Tannen Knuckle Sandwich being served to you for causing $300 bucks damage to his car. When the blood hits the canvas, you can see it all over and you can also see it trail as you move your fighter around the ring. While this happens in boxing, MMA is more of a top down or a from the side camera angle style fighter as opposed to a face to face camera for a sport like boxing. The pre fight “Tale Of The Tape” is awesome as well the fighter introductions.

There are no walk to the ring as in THQ’s WWE games, but what you do get is Bruce Buffer doing all the announcements and all the hype and build up that creates is simply amazing. You can get this sense of “something is getting ready to go down” during the entire opening. Sadly though, these introductions can go on for a bit too long, you can skip them no problem. But when it comes to online, you cant skip it unless it is set to off by the host of the session or by you if you are hosting. You can skip them in the single player very easily, but with the online, if there is some lag, it will make the presentation even longer which is ridiculous. A simple pressing of the start button should have been the default here.

I won’t take away from the quality of the presentations with this problem since there amazingly done and well produced but it does get annoying after seeing it over and over. Also, i can do without the Ring Girls, thats useless to me. You already have a game that has great graphics all over and not just in one area of the characters body, don’t ruin it with cheesy none sense like that. That’s what wrecked the Need For Speed games, the need to constantly pour all your efforts into the realism of the female characters to cover up the weak areas of a game.

Great Facial Animations: http://i40.tinypic.com/21jy42o.jpg

This Missed Shot Could Knock You Out: http://i43.tinypic.com/nvqhqf.jpg

The commentary is something of a bother as well. While Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg do lend there voices and likeness to the game, past that its nothing special at all. The voice over work is good and the emotion is there, however, the game just has a commentary set in tracks more then in real time. Madden had this issue which had it fixed over the years, even though there are still some issues to be had with that. But Madden is the standard in commentary, not because its Madden and Michaels, but because it makes a video game of football feel, sound, and look real.

UFC has a good selections of recordings but that is all they are, the pop in and out when certain actions occur, but all the while when nothing is going on, there is either silence or some attempted conversation going on that does not translate well into the fight. A good example of this is when these conversations are going on and a big punch or kick is landed, you can clearly tell there impact move track quickly plays when the actions occurs and that there conversation does not build up into the contact, the dialogue is well written but poorly put together. Its annoying to hear at times and when there is lag online, its very behind.

I like both Rogan and Goldberg and i know that THQ will work with them to get a more accurate feel for the next game, its just right now the voice over work is very poor. Its the only problem i consider MAJOR with the presentation. The others are minor things that are bothersome but not as severe as the audio track.

The rest of the audio is excellent. The music selection is good as well, as soon as i turn the game on i hear Click, Click, BOOM! thats a great way to get anyone who just got this game ready to go. All the music in the game fits well into the game and you can also use your own music since thats a feature worked into the Xbox 360. The music is unedited to a degree, i mean they know there will be kids playing this game so not all you hear is unedited. The sounds of the contact of the kicks and punches being made are clear and loud which is perfect since the game itself is very loud. Being a high impact sport it fits very well into the entire theme of the game. Great graphics and audio complete the package.

The detail put into the facial animations is amazing as well. When your hit, you can see the fighter squint and wince in pain and the more body work you do, the more gasps of air can be heard as well. Its a very well done aspect of this game and its something not too many games can pull of correctly. You can feel your fighter getting weaker and you can feel the suffering going on, its just a shame that your fighter continues to fight at full strength even though there being destroyed during the fight. There is some minor changes to the way your fighter controls and there speed and power decrease slightly but not enough in comparison to the punishment your are either giving or enduring.

And speaking of enduring, you can clearly see the open cuts, bruising, and swelling that is occurring on your fighters body. This is a great feature since it shows there are areas softer and more prone to pain that you can work. The blood and sweat in this game is simply stunning, it actually looks like your fighter is bleeding and sweating. The animations once again are huge here and come to a head here. There is no slow down in the frame rate which keeps the game moving smoothly.

The online play from all i have played so far of it online is very slow, i mean slow. There are huge delays in the connection rates online when you either host or search for a game. And there are instances where there are no search results found. Also in terms of the multiplayer, there are NO open weight class fighting. This sucks since you cant make your own UFC dream match come true. As Eric said to me in an email, it would be nice to see Anderson Silva Vs GSP or Liddell Vs Lesnar. That would be a huge addition to this already robust MMA game, opening up the weight classes would generate interest online and could very well lead to actual fights in a real UFC Ring.

Another issue i have is that while there is already a HUGE roster of fighters, there is no legends division roster of sorts in the game. While this has not been ruled out since there is an option for downloadable content. But no Randy Couture? Perhaps this is because he is a consultant for the upcoming EA Mixed Martial Arts project? Who really knows about this one.

Also, while this game is a true MMA at its core, the controls are good for the sport, but bad for the gamer. There is a MAJOR learning curve in the controls so if your not open to learning them or reading the manual or using the practice mode, this game may not be for you. In the end, what you are getting here is the complete package, a true MMA game in every sense of the word. While there are some rookie mistakes made here, its a good game but does have lots of room for improvement. UFC Undisputed 2009 is now available for both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for an MSRP of $59.99. Rated T For Teen.
