Punk Retains and Cena Regains WWE titles at Breaking Point

September 14, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

WWE Breaking PointJohn Cena won his fourth WWE championship at Breaking Point defeating Randy Orton. Orton gave up to an STF with the help of handcuffs. WWE world champion CM Punk retained his title against the Undertaker. Punk paid homage to the Montreal Screw Job by reenacting the same scenario and screwing Taker to end the show. Punk also mentioned Jeff Hardy earlier in the show which is sure to get a lot of people talking.

The Montreal Screw Job played a part throughout Breaking Point. The event was held in Montreal. Earlier in the night, fans screamed “You Screwed Bret” at DX. Get over it already! Not the kind of babyface reaction you’d want for your top attraction. The screw job was later reenacted as referee Scott Armstrong rang the bell while Punk had Taker in the Anaconda Vise. Taker never gave up and Teddy Long was left standing with a lot of explaining to do. Lock the door Teddy!

John Cena regained his WWE championship in the co-main event. The match was probably one of Cena’s better matches in the last several years. Orton used a paid of handcuffs throughout the match, handcuffing and beating Cena who wouldn’t quit. Cena finally took possession of the handcuffs and used them in a combination with the STF for the win.

Cena has been on top for a long time, but it’s been a while since he has had the title. It would have been three years this week since Cena’s last title reign. Cena never technically lost the title during his last run. Cena had to vacate the title after suffering a severe injury against Mr. Kennedy on WWE RAW. Orton has had three reigns since that time. Triple H leads the all-time list with eight WWE title reigns.

In a somewhat surprising move, WWE acknowledged Jeff Hardy’s arrest on the show. CM Punk in an interview made reference to Jeff having his mug shot all over the Internet. I am pretty surprised. I would have expected WWE to run away from this story. Additionally, Jeff Hardy left the company reportedly on good terms. Why kick a man when he is down, especially when his brother and his best friends are still working there?

Former WWE Diva Trish Stratus will be the WWE Guest Host tomorrow on RAW. Stratus will captain the ship as they follow up Breaking Point. The show also features an appearance by former WWE champion Batista. Batista is scheduled to make a career altering announcement. The set up will also begin for the WWE’s next big show, Hell in the Cell. I would expect a set of Hell in the Cell matches to include DX vs. Legacy, CM Punk vs. Undertaker, and John Cena vs. Randy Orton.

WWE 2009 Breaking Point Preview and Predictions

September 11, 2009 By: Eric Robert Darsie Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

WWE Breaking Point“Still Unbroken” by Lynyrd Skynyrd equals the total kick-bottom theme song for this Sunday’s WWE Breaking Point. Why would I say that it’s a kick-bottom tune? It’s a mix by Skynyrd of their older music that fans of theirs absolutely love and a new, modern age rock of love produced to be WWE Breaking Points theme. Shockingly enough, this is one of few country/rock songs that I really enjoy. I would suggest everyone to go out and buy the single, “Still Unbroken,” because it rocks that much to the core and you’ll get your rocking’s out of this song. Now to the pay-per-view perditions.

World Heavyweight Championship Submission match:
CM Punk (Champ) v. the Undertaker

A returning Dead Man is coming back this Sunday to challenge the World Heavyweight Champion in a submission match for the champion’s title strap. CM Punk has his hands full because the Undertaker never submitted ever in his career as the Undertaker, ever. Could this Sunday be a first for everyone ordering the pay-per-view? I personally don’t think so. Here’s my prediction: CM Punk someone does a “Montréal Screw Job II” to the Dead Man, putting him in his Anaconda Vise, having the referee calling for the bell, making the Dead Man never tapping. Remember, they are in Montréal, of all places, on Sunday. You read it first here.

WWE Championship “I Quit” match:
Randy Orton (Champ) v. John Cena

If you would have read my predictions for SummerSlam, you would have noticed then that I didn’t care about their match at SummerSlam, and same here, I could care less about Orton and Cena at Breaking Point. I am getting pretty sick and tired of seeing this main event at most of the pay-per-view main events in the past several years. But looking at the track record of both men in submission matches, or even the “I Quit” matches, I have to put my money, and my prediction, on John Cena forcing Orton to quit and Cena becoming a four-time WWE Champion and a six-time World Champion. A great match would be watching Cena’s first “I Quit” match in the WWE against John “Bradshaw” Layfield back in 2005 at Judgment Day (a pay-per-view that I attended, it was in Minnesota).

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Submission match:
Chris Jericho & Big Show v. Mark Henry & MVP

A match where they put two random wrestlers together to face the red-hot champions, I cannot see Mark Henry and MVP walking out of Breaking Point defeating the team of the Big Show and Chris Jericho. And honestly, I cannot see more of a bigger two mismatch teams of Big Show and Chris Jericho versus MVP and Mark Henry. We can see that Jericho and Show work, they are the tag team champs for the past two pay-per-views, making Breaking Point their third pay-per-view title match. In the end, my prediction goes with the current tag champs walking out with the unified tag straps, that being the Big Show and Chris Jericho.

Submission’s Count Anywhere match:
D-Generation X v. Legacy

Are you ready to see a first at Breaking Point, a submission’s count anywhere match? A match by itself, I’m personally excited for. The four individuals that are in the match, am I excited to see in the match, if done correctly, I am. But thinking of the match, I’m really not that thrilled for the match. Just like his sister match, the submission’s count anywhere match, the fall(s) can and will be counted anywhere when D-Generation X takes on Legacy in their second pay-per-view feud match. My prediction for the match is Legacy, because to make this feud better and to make Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase better, they need to go 1-to-1 with Michaels and HHH in their feud.

To conclude my predictions for WWE Breaking Point, if they’re anything like my predictions for SummerSlam, I will go a little over 50 percent on getting my predictions right. I only gave four predictions. Could I be right on them all, or even three of them? That would catch me off guard if that’s the case. But here’s my predictions, and I hope you all enjoyed getting my incite on the pay-per-view. This is Eric Darsie from Minnesota, jamming out to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Still Unbroken,” bought from iTunes and now is on my iPod, goodbye!

HBK and Undertaker Steal the Show at WWE WrestleMania

April 06, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

HBK vs. the Undertaker Whether WWE WrestleMania XXV lived up to the standards set of past WrestleMania shows is debatable. There were the usual WrestleMania celebrities. There were the usual grand entrances by WWE superstars. But overall, the show itself was a toss up among most fans. However there was no debate as to who had the best match on the show. Once again, Shawn Michaels lived up the moniker of “Mr. WrestleMania.”

Shawn Michaels and Undertaker had what will go down as a 31 minute WrestleMania classic. These two hadn’t missed a beat since their exciting series of matches over ten years ago. The match was just simply great and had 70,000 plus going nuts from entrance to finish. The old dogs showed the current class of wrestlers what stealing the show at WrestleMania is all about.

The match had a pretty quick pace throughout most of the bout. There were some throwback spots in there that old-school fans could appreciate. For one, Shawn Michaels took a WrestleMania XI-like backdrop from Undertaker. Second, the two used a spot right out of their Hell in a Cell match by getting a gimmicked cameraman involved. The spot will probably be most remembered for Undertaker landing right on his head.

That wasn’t the only glitch of the match. After kicking out of a Tombstone, Michaels reversed another attempt into a DDT. The move didn’t seem to be noticed by the live crowd. Thanks to a genius in the production truck, a replay was shown immediately thereafter of the botch. The director who called for that shot should probably be getting his resume ready today.

Both men traded and hit all of their signature spots. Michaels even pulled out some new tricks which was nice to see. In the end, Undertaker caught Michaels in the midst of a Moonsault Block. Undertaker reversed it into another Tombstone. Unlike the previous Tombstone, Michaels never kicked out of the subsequent pin. Undertaker now goes to 17-0 and the WrestleMania streak continues.

My second favorite match of the night was actually the Elimination Match between Chris Jericho vs. Jimmy Snuka, Roddy Piper, and Ricky Steamboat. Well not the match itself, but the moments between Jericho and Steamboat. Snuka and Piper really need to stay away from the ring. I loved these two guys growing up, but it is really painful to watch them in 2009. Ricky Steamboat was another story altogether.

Steamboat had not had a wrestling match in about fifteen years. As one of the greatest of all-time, I really worried that he’d embarrass himself. Steamboat did not embarrass anyone but the guys that had to follow him. Steamboat looked fantastic and held his own with Jericho. I am almost tempted to see a singles match between Steamboat and Jericho at Backlash. Jericho beat Steamboat, but Steamboat looked absolutely fantastic in my opinion.

The second most remembered WrestleMania moment will probably be the return of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Austin drove an ATV to the ring and drank a ton of beers to the crowd’s delight. I can’t imagine another WWE superstar in our lifetime reaching the kind of popularity he has. Triple H and Randy Orton followed this, which was quite a task for the main-event.

The celebrities were in attendance as usual at WrestleMania. Kid Rock performed a near 15 minute set. This brings up a story of my own from a few months back. I remember seeing a sign for Kid Rock performing in A.C. on the highway. I said to my girlfriend, “Who in their right mind is going to see Kid Rock in 2009?” To me, this just goes to show how completely out of touch with music that the WWE is. Paul Heyman has written about this in his column and this was a perfect example of this. Maybe they can book Limp Bizkit for next year at this rate?

Mickey Rourke from The Wrestler was the show-stealing celebrity. Rourke sat ringside with a few MMA fighters. Jericho challenged Rourke to get in the ring. Rourke did, and cold cocked Jericho with a punch. I wouldn’t call this pathetic, but I wouldn’t call it a great moment either. Ric Flair quickly ended this by pulling Rourke off of him. Thank God they didn’t go with the planned match.

The rest of the show was a mixed bag. I thought the Hardy vs. Hardy match was a bit disappointing. The Extreme Rules really hampered these guys from doing what they do best. The match almost looked like a bad independent hardcore match. The storyline about Matt killing Jeff’s dog is just way too ridiculous at this point. It’s time to move on to another chapter. I also thought it was rather insulting of the announcers (I’m sure at Vince’s request) to categorize this as a more heated brother-rivalry than the Harts.

I didn’t particularly care for either of the two main-events. John Cena pinned Big Show to win the WWE world title. Triple H retained the WWE championship pinning Randy Orton. There will probably be some controversy coming out of it since he used a sledgehammer. CM Punk won Money in the Bank for the second year in a row. I could try and explain that one for the next year and probably couldn’t come up with anything. I would expect something with him and either Edge or Randy Orton in the near future.
