Triple H: King of Kings – There is Only One – WWE DVD Review

October 12, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Entertainment, WWE / Pro Wrestling

Triple H King of KingsThe one constant over the last decade for WWE fans is Triple H. Unlike Steve Austin, the Rock, and others who have come and gone, Triple H is still headlining WWE shows. In all of the years of watching him, I can’t remember Triple H taking many nights off in the ring. It is hard to disagree with him when Triple H claims to be the biggest star in this business today.

Triple H: King of Kings is the third DVD spotlighting The Game from WWE Home Video. The video is laid out a lot like Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan’s WWE DVD Home Videos. Several of Triple H’s most memorable WWE and even some WCW matches are spotlighted on the DVD. Triple H talks between matches and then the DVD cuts directly to the next match. The two-disc set is a reminder of how great this guy really is when he is on his game (no pun intended).

If you are looking for a controversial DVD or some good wrestling shooting, this isn’t the DVD for you. Triple H doesn’t rock any boats or ruffle any feathers with his comments. Triple H seems honest and sincere when telling his stories, and talks out of character throughout the DVD.

The only guy that gets any criticism is resident WWE whipping boy, Marc Mero. Triple H now joins Mick Foley and Steve Austin in the group of wrestlers who have taken shots at Mero in their books or DVDs. Triple H gives Mero a backhanded compliment at one point. Triple H says that wrestling Mero made him a better wrestler. It really wasn’t much of a compliment with the point being that Mero was so bad, Triple H had to overcome Mero’s inabilities to create great matches. That is what made Triple H a better wrestler according to Triple H. Personally, I think it is pretty weak to take your one shot at a guy who has been out of the business for over a decade.

There is also the resident WCW-bashing story that comes with most WWE DVDs. Triple H tells a great story about leaving WCW and coming to the WWE. It all seems pretty simple and is another story in WCW letting one of the biggest stars in the business walk away before he had the chance to break out. His contract came due right in the middle of his push as a Blue Blood. A call from Vince McMahon and a quick agreement began the era of the King of Kings. Once again WCW mismanages another contract…shocking!

Triple H talks candidly about his relationship with Shawn Michaels. Triple H makes a joke about having to convince Shawn Michaels to show up for WrestleMania XIV. Triple H also talks about the fallout he had years later with Shawn. Shawn discusses this in much more detail in his book. Triple H goes on to talk about the series of matches he had with his D-X partner in glowing terms.

Triple H gets a lot of criticism on the Internet and in newsletters for his politics. I disagree quite a bit with those criticisms, and have written about it in the past. If you look at most of Triple H’s big feuds, he has done several jobs along the way. A great example of this is the Batista feud. Triple H talks quite a bit about his feud with Batista. He is proud of the fact he lost three times in a row, yet every match was successful in the series. For all of the criticism that he gets, I rarely hear anyone bring this up and he is right.

The match selection is outstanding for this DVD. Sure, there are some great Triple H matches that are missing from the set. However, you can’t ask for a better collection whether you are a big Triple H fan or just love the WWE. Some highlights on the DVD include:

Triple H and Shawn Michaels in the 2 out of 3 falls match from Armageddon is a forgotten classic. The bloody Hell in a Cell between Triple H and Batista is another forgotten classic that you can relive on this set. Some great matches with Triple H and Steve Austin and Cactus Jack are also included. My favorite match on the DVD is the Last Man Standing Match between Triple H and Ric Flair from Survivor Series.

This is exactly what you want from a DVD collection. All of these matches are matches that have never been released on DVD sets, other than their respective pay-per-views. There is nothing worse than buying a DVD full of matches you have seen a million times. The match selection is great and Triple H comes across as honest as I have ever seen him. The tribute to the biggest superstar in the business today is long overdue. Whether you are a Triple H fan or just a big WWE fan, this one is worth picking up.

WWE: The Rise and Fall of WCW DVD Trailer

August 20, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Videos, WWE / Pro Wrestling

Check out the newest trailer for the WWE DVD – The Rise and Fall of WCW. There has been a big buzz about this DVD for months. By the looks of the trailer, it will undoubtedly provoke conversation and interest. The new WWE DVD is available Tuesday August 25.

There has been controversy surrounding this DVD for months. Eric Bischoff, Ted Turner and other WCW executives turned down the opportunity to be a part of the DVD. “I chose not to participate in WWE’s latest revisionist history initiative for many reasons,” wrote Bischoff. Unfortunately the story will lose a bit of credibility without having him or Vince Russo on board to tell their sides of the story.

WWE produced the Rise and Fall of ECW a few years back. Overall the company did a fair job I felt on giving ECW its due. Keep in mind that Paul Heyman was a WWE employee at the time so I wasn’t expecting a big hatchet job anyway. I don’t expect the same kind of treatment given to WCW in this documentary. Bischoff also gave a very nice balance to the story on the WWE Monday Night Wars DVD.

Let’s face it, there aren’t many people around who loved WCW the way the boys loved ECW. I don’t expect many former WCW wrestlers to gloat about the greatness of WCW at this stage in the game. For one, it would be political suicide if they wanted to keep or get a job in the WWE. This would be like Fox News doing a documentary about Barack Obama without one democrat or supporter in the movie.

I will reserve full judgment until I see the documentary in its entirety. For WCW fans, you can look forward to a nice package of classic wrestling matches to be included on the set. For wrestling fans, it will be a nice trip down memory lane and a reminder of how much fun Monday nights used to be.

WWE Allied Powers – The World’s Greatest Tag Teams DVD Review

July 14, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

Allied Powers DVD WWE pays homage to tag team wrestling with its newest DVD release. WWE Allied Powers – The World’s Greatest Tag Teams DVD hits the shelves today. The DVD set spotlights some of wrestling’s greatest teams with a collection of matches and vignettes.

The DVD follows the Macho Madness format of having hosts. The set is hosted by the Miz and John Morrison. Yes, Miz and Morrison who aren’t even a team anymore are the hosts. Even so, I found the two pretty entertaining throughout the DVD. As a matter of a fact, it makes you wonder why the WWE split them up in the first place.

I think that the WWE missed a golden opportunity here. This could have had the potential to be a blow away set. I think if the WWE presented this like a documentary with the wrestlers themselves, the set would have been tremendous. Chances are that the WWE would have already had enough material from past documentaries. Unfortunately the opportunity was missed.

Another point of controversy may be the selection of teams. There are some teams on here that make you scratch your head. On the other hand, there are several teams omitted that should have been here. You can’t stick everyone on here, but does Rated RKO really deserve a spot on the world’s greatest tag team list?

The match selection varies as well throughout the DVD. I find it almost criminal that the Road Warriors are spotlighted by a match against Money Inc. The WWE owns the AWA and NWA tape library. I could name 50 other matches featuring the Road Warriors that deserved to be on the DVD over this one.

I also for the life of me can’t understand how you can put out a tag team wrestling DVD and not have one Rock and Roll Express vs. Midnight Express on this one. Both teams are featured, but I ask you if there is any other match that epitomizes tag team wrestling like the rivalry these teams had?

On the plus side, there are some tremendous matches on here. My favorite spotlights one of the greatest feuds of all-time between the Freebirds and the Von Erichs in a Country Whipping Match. Another great one pits the Rockers against the Brain Busters. Public Enemy vs. the Nasty Boys is a fun brawl. Finally, I applaud the selection of the Steiners against Hase and Sasaki. These selections alone make this one a must-see DVD.

The entire match listing for the set is;

British Bulldogs vs. Hart Foundation
Madison Square Garden September 23, 1985

Steiner Brothers vs. Hiroshi Hase / Kensuke Sasaki
Japan Supershow March 21, 1991

2 out of 3 Falls Tag Team Match
Killer Bees vs. Demolition
Houston, TX October 9, 1987

Edge & Christian vs. Hardy Boys
King of the Ring June 27, 1999

Country Whipping Tag Team Match
Fabulous Freebirds vs. Kerry Von Erich / Kevin Von Erich

Funk Brothers vs. Brisco Brothers
Championship Wrestling From Florida

Harlem Heat vs. Steiner Brothers
Hog Wild August 10, 1996

Fantastics vs. Midnight Express
Great American Bash July 10, 1988

Anything Goes, Falls Count Anywhere Street Fight
Public Enemy vs. Nasty Boys
SuperBrawl VI February 11, 1996

Rockers vs. Brain Busters

DVD Review – WWE Greatest Stars of the 90s

April 23, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

WWE Greatest Stars of the 90s WWE’s newest documentary takes a look back at the 1990s. The time has come to start recognizing the legacy of the 1990s. The 90s have become the forgotten decade in wrestling. From The Rock-Ric Flair, Steve Austin-Bret Hart, the newest WWE home video remembers them all.

The WWE Greatest Stars of the 90s home video is a three-disc set. The first disc is a documentary. Discs two and three are full of matches, interviews, and extras. The format is very similar to the WWE Greatest Stars of the 80s set released last year, compacted on to disc one. The matches are a mixed-bag depending upon how big a fan of the 90s you were. Regardless, it is nice to see WWE getting full use out of the countless libraries they have acquired.

Disc 1 is the documentary of the set. The documentary is very good. I would call it a must-see for anyone, whether you are a fan of the 90s or not. Tazz opens up the video, yet the video is full of comments from WWE stars. The comments are both new and taken from previous home videos. The opinions are a lot of fun, but remember that this is a WWE home video. It is payback time for guys like Mick Foley and Lex Luger.

Lex Luger gets his usual WWE whipping on the disc. Lex Luger is routinely spoken of as a guy who did not live up to his potential. I find this an arguable point to make. It is obvious he doesn’t possess the skills of someone like Jushin Liger. However, the key to pro wrestling is drawing money. The guy drew money! I can’t even get through a match of his past 1994 without being bored to death. Yet the guy drew money and for someone like CM Punk to take a shot at him is kind of ridiculous in my opinion.

Mick Foley’s segment is a peculiar one. The disc definitely pays homage to the legacy of Mick Foley in the WWE. At the same time, the WWE doesn’t go out of its way to pump him up either. One thing of note is that they talk about the “Rock – This is your Life” segment from WWE RAW. It is never mentioned that the segment was the highest rated segment in RAW history. I don’t think that was an accident.

Contrary to this, is the tribute given to Sting. The WWE does a great job of chronicling the impact Sting had on WCW. This comes at an interesting time where Sting is the top star of WWE’s biggest competitor. It is obvious that the WWE have plans for Sting following his TNA career. I don’t think it is any coincidence that Sting’s name was brought up for Hall of Fame consideration this year. Sting fans will be pleased with his segment.

WWE is also fair in giving praise to other wrestlers no longer with the company. Kevin Nash has a very big segment on the disc. CM Punk takes another shot which could be considered subtle by saying anyone associated with Shawn Michaels at the time was cool. I loved Shawn Michaels as a wrestler and hated Diesel at the time, so I don’t think that is very accurate. I think a fair argument which was avoided was his questionable booking in WCW. I wasn’t a big fan of it, but that doesn’t make it bad. I think it would have been perfectly just to open it up for discussion.
Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan are the only wrestlers to be profiled on this set and the 80s set. There isn’t much that you haven’t already heard about how great these two legends are. Triple H has a bit of revisionist history when he recalls the Hogan-Flair house show series as a huge success. Actually, not only was it not a success it was considered a huge flop. Hogan also has a bit of revisionist history when he says he faded away from the WWE before the fans got sick of him. If I remember right, the fans were pretty sick of Hogan by that point. Regardless, these guys were both major played in the 90s so it is nice to see them included.

Eric Bischoff and Paul Heyman are lumped together for one segment. I don’t agree with that whatsoever. I think both guys had such impact on the 90s, that both deserve their own segments. It is arguable whether the WWE Attitude era would have even happened if it were not for ECW or WCW. It was nice to pay tribute to these guys, because let’s face it. They don’t have to do mention them at all. I just think their single accomplishments are enough to warrant individual segments.

There are a lot more guys and girls covered on the set. I can sit here and rundown every segment, but you really need to see this DVD. I think everyone will have their own opinion of the segments based on their own fan loyalty and knowledge. Tributes to the Rock and Steve Austin overshadow everyone else and rightfully so. The 90s were really their decade, yet they only came on strong in 1997. From a business standpoint, the last three years are enough to call those two guys the greatest of the era in my opinion.

There are some great matches on the set. Rather than break down each and every match with a critique, I’d rather list them. Again, what I like may be different than your tastes based on your background. I think the collection is fantastic nonetheless. The matches, promos, and angles are a must for any collection.

The set includes the following matches;

Ric Flair vs. Hulk Hogan – Madison Square Garden – November 30, 1991

Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels – Survivor Series – November 25, 1992

Hulk Hogan vs. Yokozuna – King of the Ring – June 13, 1993

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart – WrestleMania X – March 20, 1994

Diesel vs. Razor Ramon -Superstars – April 13, 1994

Sting vs. Vader – Slamboree – May 22, 1994

Bret Hart vs. Diesel – Royal Rumble – January 22, 1995
