John Cena vs. The UndertakerThe Go-Home Week Before Survivor Series 2009!

This past week for WWE television was the Go-Home week before this year’s Survivor Series. For this past week for the main event for Raw and Smackdown, I feel like the WWE did something right, with two tag team main events for Raw and Smackdown, were we saw DX taking on JeriShow taking on the two World Champs, The Undertaker and John Cena on Raw and saw JeriShow versus the Brothers of Destruction on Smackdown. Let’s discuss the two tag team main events.

Monday Night Raw: Triple Threat Tag Team Match featuring Survivor Series Main Events!

A match that should have been given more air time, because the match started seven minutes after 10 Central time, but all-in-all, this match was a great television main event match. And against normal triple threat tag team matches, each guy from each team was in the match at all times, and only can tag in their own partners. But looking past the fact that I believe this match should have been given more air time, I really enjoyed this match. I would of payed money to see this match on a pay-per-view, to be honest, if the two World titles and the Tag Team titles were on the line, and if someone pinned the champ, they get the title (if they pinned the tag champs, that team gets the tag straps). If WWE did that, this match could of easily gone 30 minutes, if not longer, on a pay-per-view, and combined three matches into one. But that’s me.

But let’s discuss the match. A match that, like said, I really enjoyed. I don’t remember how long this match went, but when the match ended, I was happy with. John Cena pinned Triple H in the end to get the victory (a prelude to the Survivor Series WWE Championship Triple Threat match…), and right after, Cena got Tombstone Piledrove by the World Heavyweight Champion! That put a huge smile. Thank you Undertaker for driving the WWE Champion six feet into the ground. Good job.

Friday Night Smackdown: Unified Tag Team Champions faces the Brothers of Destruction!

Another match, like the main event on Raw Monday night, that I would love to pay on pay-per-view to see this tag match go for the Unified Tag Team Straps, seeing the World Heavyweight Champion the Undertaker teaming up with his half-brother Kane, as Brothers of Destruction, going against the Unified Tag Team Champions, Chris Jericho and the Big Show, Jeri-Show. I feel like this match was awesome, seeing Kane and the Undertaker living up to their tag team name and kicking butts and taking names. I am happy that this match got more air time than the Raw main event.

We saw in the end that Big Show was trying to help up Jericho and Jericho hit the Code Breaker on the World’s Largest Athlete, ran out of the ring in fear of what would happen, grabbed the Undertaker’s World Heavyweight Championship, and ran up the ramp, and posed with the championship on the entrance stage. I was disappointed that there’s no definite winner of the match on Smackdown Friday night, but I am happy to be able to catch it while it aired on television, brother!

Finally…the Conclusion!

But to wrap up this week’s week-in review, I really enjoyed the two tag team main events on the two main shows that the WWE put together. I am excited to see the three-hour Raw’s Thanksgiving tonight with my former Governor, Jesse “the Body,” wait, I mean Jesse “the Mind” Ventura guest host’s tonight’s Raw, dude! This is Eric Darsie from Minnesota, sitting in Atwood, waiting for class to start here in a couple of hours, goodbye!

WWE Survivor Series 2009 Review

November 23, 2009 By: Eric Robert Darsie Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

John Cena vs. Triple HLast night marked the 23rd World Wrestling Entertainment Survivor Survivor Series, and was main evented by the two World Championship Triple Threat matches. For me, I feel like those two matches were the biggest matches on the card, not to try to take away from the other four matches. I will admit, for the most part, this pay-per-view was better than expected. It may have been having six or so other friends over last night to watch Survivor Series and we had a little challenge going on to see that can do best on making predictions for the event, and I came out last, to everyone’s surprise. But let me talk about the two World title main events; the WWE Championship Triple Threat and the World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat..

World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat: the Big Show taps to Hell’s Gate!

A match that I expected to be horrible, just because of the limited move set of the Big Show and of the Undertaker. But I feel like this match turned out better than expected, and I would say this match was better than the World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 25 with John Cena, Edge, and the Big Show.

But at first, the Unified Tag Team Champions were working together at the start of the match. And as been teased the past several weeks on television, the Big Show and Chris Jericho finally did wrestle each other a couple of times. Even though they really didn’t totally go against each other, but when it seemed like they were teasing the finish, they would break it up and go against one another for a little while.

And right at the end, the Big Show hit Jericho with the “Turkey Punch (the Knock Out Punch),” he was going to Chokeslam the Undertaker, and the Dead Man pulled the Big Show in for Hell’s Gate and go the tap out. That made me sad. Made me sad because I wanted to see Chris Jericho win the World Heavyweight Championship last night, but Jericho wasn’t in the decision of the match, so could we see a Jericho/Undertaker feud for the World Heavyweight Title?

WWE Championship Triple Threat: Sweet Chin Music equals the first move of the match, to HHH!

A match that didn’t live up to the hype of what was being built up. Everyone I talked to, as well as me, thought this match was going to turn out as a joke, and it wasn’t. I was totally in love with this match. Michaels and Triple H came out together then Cena came out. And the first move of the match, a Sweet Chin Music to Triple H, out of the blue!

But after the first move, Cena was surprised and Michaels and Cena stood around for about a minute, selling what the Heartbreak Kid just did. But this match turned out to a lot of one-on-one encounters with the guys taking turns. And another spot that we saw of this match that surprised me was Triple H spinbustering Michaels through the announcer table.

But this match saw a lot of false finishes, like Shawn Michaels Sweet Chin Musicing Cena, and then Triple H and Triple H fell on top of Cena, and got a two count. But at the end, to everyone’s surprise (not really), Cena pinned Triple H. That was a shock to me, and then Triple H took the fall for Triple H. But a great match that I thought was going to suck.

Conclusion

But to conclude, I would suggest everyone to go out and buy this pay-per-view on DVD when it comes out on DVD here in a month or so. This was a better pay-per-view than expected. But this is Eric Darsie from Minnesota, tired from last night’s Survivor Series, goodbye!

WWE Survivor Series Preview and Predictions

November 20, 2009 By: Eric Robert Darsie Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

WWE Survivor Series 2009Once again, World Wrestling Entertainment’s Survivor Series is here! A normal pay-per-view, I don’t know if I would really like this pay-per-view, because this pay-per-view only has one singles match. But at least the two world titles are up on the line and there are three traditional Survivor Series matches. To be honest, I won’t go into the three traditional Survivor Series because the only big match out of the two is the Team Orton versus Team Kofi, and we all know that Orton’s team will go over Kofi’s team. But here are the main three matches that I will give my predictions for…

Triple Threat World Heavyweight Championship Match:
The Undertaker (Champion) versus Chris Jericho (1/2 of Unified Tag Champs) versus the Big Show (1/2 of the Unified Tag Champs)

A match that I am looking forward to, not the wrestling of the match (or maybe the lack of, depending on who you talk to); I am excited to see how this match will end. The Undertaker and Big Show had a feud last year and we saw a Jericho/Undertaker match the other week on Smackdown. And I would, as made obvious on previous article for CamelClutchBlog.com and if you’ve heard me on Pro Wrestling Radio before, I am pulling for Chris Jericho to regain the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series.

But if anyone that could bring out a great match out of the Undertaker these days is Chris Jericho. And through in the Big Show, this could bring the destruction of the Unified Tag Team Champions, Jeri-Show.

Prediction: The Undertaker, walking out with the World Heavyweight Championship.

Triple Threat WWE Championship Match:
John Cena (Champion) versus Triple H versus Shawn Michaels

The match that I’m torn between; I don’t know how this match will turn out, either being a crappy match or a show-stealing match. I can see DX team up against Cena for most of the match and then turn on each other. What I would love to see is Triple H turn on Shawn Michaels, John Cena taking out Triple H, and Michaels getting the victory. Or at least that’s what I would love to see.

Honestly, I can see this match being a joke. That’s been the buildup. And I don’t think that the WWE will make Triple H become a heel, and Shawn Michaels won’t get over as a heel. And how it seems like the office is in love with John Cena, so I can’t see them take the title off of him.

But I’ll go out on with this prediction…

Prediction: Shawn Michaels, walking out as the new WWE Champion.

Batista versus Rey Mysterio

The one and only, one-on-one match on the card. And sadly enough, Mysterio needs to take time off because he messed up and knee. But a match that I actually enjoy the story behind the match. And two guys that people thought we’ll never see, is Batista and Mysterio.

But because of the whole Mysterio’s bummed knee thing, I really can’t see this match go too long, and it not going too long, I really don’t want to take much time and talk about it.

Prediction: Batista, because of Mysterio’s bummed knee, and his steroids.

Conclusion

To conclude the preview of Survivor Series, I do hope that next year’s Survivor Series would have more of the traditional Survivor Series matches, so I am happy that at least half the card’s the traditional matches. But for the main events, it’s kind of sad that they both are the same because the WWE couldn’t think of anything better. But this is Eric Darsie from Minnesota, chilling on a Minnesota November night, goodbye!

Top 5 WWE Survivor Series Moments

November 19, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: WWE / Pro Wrestling

Bret HartThis Sunday will mark the 23rd World Wrestling Entertainment Survivor Series pay-per-view in WWE history. The annual event has changed quite a bit from the original concept of multiple tag-team elimination matches. Some of wrestling’s most memorable moments have taken place on the WWE’s grand November stage. What was once a show put together simply to battle rival Jim Crockett has grown to be the home for some classic matches and moments. In celebration of 23 years of Survivor Series I present my top 5 memorable moments in WWE Survivor Series history.

5 - The Gobbledy Gooker…Survivor Series 1990. If you ever want to see the epitome of the crazy, corny, character-driven wrestling of the 80s and early 90s, watch the debut of the Gobbledy Gooker.

The Gookler was hyped for weeks on television. Without the advantage of the Internet, nobody was quite sure what to expect. Mean Gene Okerland hosted the segment which featured a large egg and a rabid crowd. Moments later the Gobbledy Gooker “hatched” from the egg and in a rare moment at the time, the WWF was booed out of the building.

The Gooker was played by Hector Guerrero and has been rarely seen since hatching at Survivor Series. While this is anything far from great, to leave this off of a memorable moment list would be ignorant. The Gobbledy Gooker is a wrestlecrap favorite and even made a return at the gimmick battle royal at WrestleMania 17.

4 - Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin…Survivor Series 1996. This is one of my favorite matches of all-time. This match was historic and memorable on a lot of levels. Number one, it was the biggest match in the WWF at the time for the man who would later go on to carry the company to number one. Second, this was the first match back from a lengthy layoff for the WWF’s top gun of the early 1990s. Third, a bad match or bad reaction may have stifled the rise to the top of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Last this was the first in the series that would take the WWF into the Attitude era.

Steve Austin and Bret Hart tore the house down and arguably stole the show. The feud couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The story on this night ended with Bret getting the win in a close match. Any other feud would have ended there, but as Austin said in promos building up the match, “Bret it will never end.”

The two would go on to steal the show at Wrestlemania 13 and have arguably the greatest Wrestlemania match of all-time. The moment the two locked up , solidified Steve Austin as a money player and a main-event WWE wrestler. This match meant just as much, if not more to Austin’s career as any other that he ever had.

For Bret, the match was equally huge. Bret left the WWF to pursue acting, in the meantime giving Shawn Michaels the ball to carry. Shawn’s success caused bitterness and jealousy in Bret that motivated him to return to the ring. Bret talked a big game coming back and a let down at Survivor Series against Austin would have turned him into more of a laughing-stock than anything else.

The match exceeded expectations and was the start of the Attitude era. The the intense build up in promos between the two going into the match was on another level of anything that the WWF/WWE had going at the time. A forgotten match by many, but one of the most memorable moments in Survivor Series history was the night Bret Hart returned to Madison Square Garden and answered the challenge of Stone Cold Steve Austin.

3 - The Rock wins his first WWF World title…Survivor Series 1998. The Rock was not the movie sensation, crowd favorite, buyrate-busting superstar that he would later be at Survivor Series 98. However, the writing was on the wall and you would have to be ignorant to miss the ascension of the Rock.

The Survivor Series 1998 featured a tournament to fill the vacated WWF title. The tournament was fantastic and every match was filled with crowd heat and emotion. Steve Austin was the runaway favorite to win the tournament, yet the fans would be swerved and the first chapter in history would be written.

The Rock had started as a flop, shoved down the fans throats as a babyface when coming into the WWF. Shortly thereafter, he was repackaged and joined the Nation of Domination. This is where the Rock developed the People’s Elbow, the People’s Eyebrow, and his persona. I remember going to a WWE RAW taping in 1998 where the Rock was wrestling the opening dark match of the night.

The Rock was far from a favorite to win the tournament, but wound up stealing the show. The Rock went through Big Boss Man, Ken Shamrock, the Undertaker, and Mick Foley to win the title. The Rock entered the tournament as a favorite but ended the tournament turning on Foley, joining Vince McMahon’s Corporation, and winning his first WWF title. This was truly a coming out party for the man that would arguably become the WWF’s biggest superstar in history.

2 - Hulk Hogan vs. the Undertaker…Survivor Series 1991. Who would have known that since this match the Undertaker would not only last longer in the WWE than Hogan, but go on to become a true wrestling legend.

This match was the first of many big-time matches for Taker and one of the most anticipated matches of Hogan’s peak as champ. Hogan last beat Sgt. Slaughter for the title but the WWF was starting to change. New wrestlers from the NWA were jumping over including Sid Vicious and Ric Flair, fans were tiring of the corny monsters, and Hogan was without a real threat as champion.

Enter Ric Flair and the Underatker. By all means, this should have been Flair’s win over Hogan. The match was made and a young, athletic Undertaker was bumping all over the place for the elder statesman. The match was going the Hulkster’s way until Ric Flair made his way down the aisle.

Flair would make his presence known by coming down to ringside and trying to steal Hogan’s belt. Hogan was able to fight him off but also had to contend with Paul Bearer. The two men’s interference was too much for the Hulkster. Flair wound up tossing a steel-chair inside the ring which would be the deciding factor. Undertaker tombstoned Hogan on top of the steel-chair leading to a 1, 2, 3 and winning his first WWF title.

Today, this wouldn’t be a big deal but back then it was a huge deal whenever the world title changed hands. This was only the second time since the pay-per-view boom that the world title changed hands on a show other than a WrestleMania. This was the first time a non-elimination-style match was held on a Survivor Series. This was Hogan’s third title-loss if you don’t count Andre the Giant’s non-sanctioned win on Saturday Night’s Main Event.

This was one night, one match, and a lot of history. The Undertaker was still a new kid on the block yet the new kid shocked the world by beating Hulk Hogan for the WWF title.

1 - Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart…Survivor Series 1997. Twelve years later, still one of the most talked about matches, angles, and moments in wrestling history is Hart vs. Michaels from Survivor Series 1997. The match is secondary to the story and tale that this legend has grown into since the bell rang that ended the title reign and WWE career of Bret Hart.

The match had been built up theoretically since Shawn Michaels beat Bret Hart for the WWF title at Wrestlemania 12. The backstage heat and animousity between the two had become well known in and out of wrestling circles. The two not only loathed each other, but had a well know fight in the locker room which resulted in Shawn Michaels losing clumps of his hair.

The short story behind the scenes is that Vince McMahon told Bret Hart several weeks before the match that he would not be honoring his 20-year contract. Vince allowed Bret, who was his WWF Champion at the time to negotiate and sign a deal with WCW.

Going into the match Vince asked Bret to drop the title to Shawn. Bret refused to do it because the match was in Canada and he considered it an insult to lose on his home turf. Bret agreed to drop the title but had repeated arguments with Vince over the how, when, and to who he would lose the title to. Bret’s obvious hatred for Shawn influenced his decision making for better or worse.

The match itself was good, not great and a far cry in a good way from their forgotten Survivor Series 1992 main-event. The intensity between the two was very good and the atmosphere took the match to another level. The match ended with the supposed “screw job ending.” Michaels had Hart in a sharpshooter, and the referee signaled for the bell even though it was obvious that Hart didn’t give up. Bret was screwed, Shawn was the champ, and one of the most talked about moments in wrestling folklore was born.
